Recommended Changes To Articles For 2010 Census
by Steve Meirowsky (User:Sbmeirow)
Please do not throw rocks at me, since this article is located in my user space. I welcome useful edits and constructive input.
I'm doing the following modifications to city and county articles in the state of Kansas. Please consider the following edits to cities that you are editing. Thanks!
After you edit per my instructions, please DELETE the city names from the following article:
Respect the location of the pipe character "|" and keep it in the same side as the existing article, otherwise you will need to change the location for the entire InfoBox. See the Template:Infobox settlement article for additional information.
1) Replace these lines,
|population_footnotes =
|population_as_of =
|population_total =
|population_density_sq_mi =
|population_density_km2 =
with these lines, change TBD to 2010 census count, change accessdate value to todays date.
|population_footnotes = <ref name="Census2010">((cite web|title=2010 City Population and Housing Occupancy Status|url=http://factfinder2.census.gov/faces/tableservices/jsf/pages/productview.xhtml?pid=DEC_10_PL_GCTPL2.ST13&prodType=table|publisher=U.S. Census Bureau|accessdate=August 16, 2014))</ref>
|population_as_of = [[2010 United States Census|2010]]
|population_total = TBD
|population_density_sq_mi = auto
|population_density_km2 = auto
2) Some larger cities may have the following density parameters, and the code for each appears to support the auto ability.
|population_density_urban_* =
|population_density_rural_* =
|population_density_metro_* =
|population_density_blank1_* =
|population_density_blank2_* =
4) Some larger cities may have metro population parameters, but I haven't determined what to do with them yet since they require an additional CENSUS SEARCH and REFERENCE. See Template:Infobox_settlement#Population.2C_Demographics for some of the other infobox population parameters.
Modify the top paragraph by replacing the current sentence with the following sentence, and change TBD to 2010 census count, and make sure you add a comma at the thousands location, such as 123456 would be 123,456. Some cities may have additional census years and metro census, so you will have to determine how best to clean it up.
As of the [[2010 United States Census|2010 census]], the city population was TBD.<ref name="Census2010" />
Modify the census table at the top of the Demographics section, and replace the TBD with 2010 census count. The align parameter needs to match the best location of the article, and the left side is best for most tiny city articles, which means that value left need to be added, otherwise right is assumed by default.
|2010=TBD|estyear=|estimate=|estref=|footnote=<center>U.S. Decennial Census<ref>[http://www.census.gov/prod/www/decennial.html U.S. Decennial Census; census.gov]</ref></center>))
If a city doesn't have a census table, then use the following as a starting point.
((US Census population |align= |1950=|1960=|1970=|1980=|1990=|2000=|2010=|2020= |estyear=|estimate=|estref= |footnote=<center>U.S. Decennial Census<ref>[http://www.census.gov/prod/www/decennial.html U.S. Decennial Census; census.gov]</ref></center>))
Use the Population Finder to do a quick lookup of the census for 1990 and 2000,
and 2010,
otherwise you will have to download the large PDF files for each decade from:
Add the following under the See also section. If it messes up the layout of the article, then move it to the "External links section" after the "Commons category" template.
((Portal|Kansas))
Add the following under the External links section.
((Commons category))
Locate the footers near the bottom of the article. If either the county or state footer is missing, then add it, similar to this example.
((Sedgwick County, Kansas))
((Kansas))
Do a quick scan of the article for:

Everyone should quit adding the reference after the year on the "pop_est_as_of" field in the infobox of city articles, because of layout problems in the infobox. Instead put only the YEAR in that field and add another field called "pop_est_footnotes", see the following.
This is how I'm now reordering the fields as I clean up articles as of mid-2015.
<!-- Population -->
|population_footnotes = <ref name="FactFinder"/>
|population_as_of = [[2010 United States Census|2010]]
|population_total = 1234
|pop_est_footnotes = <ref name="2014 Pop Estimate">((cite web
|title=Annual Estimates of the Resident Population: April 1, 2010 to July 1, 2014
|url=http://www.census.gov/popest/data/cities/totals/2014/SUB-EST2014-3.html
|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]] |accessdate=2015-06-16))</ref>
|pop_est_as_of = 2014
|population_est = 1122
|population_density_sq_mi = auto
|population_density_km2 = auto
I need to consider these ideas, from other authors, for future updates to the census table. At this moment, treat this section as ideas and nothing more.
