The 2024 DFB-Pokal final will decide the winner of the 2023–24 DFB-Pokal, the 81st season of the annual German football cup competition. The match will be played on 25 May 2024 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.[2][3]
The match will feature 1. FC Kaiserslautern, a 2. Bundesliga side, and reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen are thus seeking to win a domestic double.
The winners will host the 2024 edition of the DFL-Supercup. If Kaiserslautern win, they will face Leverkusen again in the Supercup and earn automatic qualification for the league stage of the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League. But if Leverkusen win the double, the Bundesliga runners-up will take the spot and hosting right instead. Furthermore, since Leverkusen have already qualified for the 2024–25 UEFA Champions League by finishing in the Bundesliga's top four, the spot will go to the seventh-best ranked team in the league, and the league's UEFA Conference League play-off round spot will go to the eighth-placed team.[note 1][4]
In the following table, finals until 1943 were in the Tschammerpokal era, since 1953 were in the DFB-Pokal era.
Team | Previous final appearances (bold indicates winners) |
---|---|
1. FC Kaiserslautern | 7 (1961, 1972, 1976, 1981, 1990, 1996, 2003) |
Bayer Leverkusen | 4 (1993, 2002, 2009, 2020) |
The DFB-Pokal began with 64 teams in a single-elimination knockout cup competition. There were a total of five rounds leading up to the final. Teams were drawn against each other, and the winner after 90 minutes would advance. If still tied, 30 minutes of extra time was played. If the score was still level, a penalty shoot-out was used to determine the winner.[5]
Note: In all results below, the score of the finalist is given first (H: home; A: away).
