Janet Planet is a 2023 American drama film written and directed by Annie Baker in her feature directorial debut. It stars Julianne Nicholson, Zoe Ziegler, Elias Koteas, Will Patton, and Sophie Okonedo. It premiered at the 50th Telluride Film Festival.[1][2][3]
In 1991, an acupuncturist hippie named Janet spends the summer at home in rural Massachusetts with her 11-year-old daughter, Lacy. Janet invites three people into her life: her boyfriend Wayne, her friend Regina, and local theatre group leader Avi. Lacy becomes skeptical of the three and remains attached to Janet, who grows frustrated with her daughter's clinginess.[4]
Janet Planet had its world premiere at the 50th Telluride Film Festival.[5] It also screened at the 2023 New York Film Festival.[3] and was screened at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section in February 2024.[6][7]
The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 21, 2024.[8]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 80% of 25 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.3/10.[9] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 84 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[10]
