MicroAge is a privately-held, award-winning full-service solutions integrator founded in 1976 and based in Phoenix, Arizona. MicroAge combines a powerful mix of technology services backed by vendor-certified engineers and an acclaimed panel of experts to deliver the competitive edge technology leaders need to lead in a disruptive digital environment.

History

An American technology organization with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1976, MicroAge was established by Jeffrey D. McKeever and Alan Hald, who opened one of the first hobby computer stores in the United States, known as The Byte Shop, in Tempe, Arizona. In 1979, MicroAge expanded its operations by opening the first MicroAge Computer Store at Paradise Valley Mall in Phoenix, Arizona. The store specialized in selling computers that were popular in the early home computer age, such as the Apple II, Northstar, Imsai and Altair computers.

MicroAge quickly grew into a major national distributor and established its own chain of stores. It became the most widely known franchiser in the computer industry, boasting over 1400 franchises worldwide, including locations in Europe, Japan, and the USSR. During its peak, MicroAge was listed on the Fortune 500 list from 1995 to 2001, employing over 6,000 people and generating revenues in excess of $6 billion.

By February 2000, MicroAge had evolved into a conglomerate comprising four subsidiary parts: MicroAge Teleservices, MicroAge Technology Services, Pinacor, and Quality Integration Services. In November 2000, MicroAge Teleservices was sold to its largest customer, United Parcel Service (UPS). In December 2000, MicroAge Technology Services, along with its network of service and support locations, was sold to CompuCom. In May 2001, some assets of Pinacor were sold to ScanSource.

In 2020, a significant leadership transition occurred when MicroAge's Chief Operating Officer, Rob Zack, assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer.
