Safnern is a municipality in the district of Nidau in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
Safnern is first mentioned in 1251 as Savenieres.[3]
Safnern has an area of Template:Km2 to mi2. Of this area, 43.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 35.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 16.7% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (4.1%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[4]
Safnern lies in the Bernese Seeland at the foot of the Bütten Mountains. It is also along the Nidau-Büren channel as well as the old river bed of the Zihl River and Aare River.
Safnern has a population (as of 2007[update]) of 1,839, of which 5.8% are foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 1.2%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks German (92.9%), with French being second most common ( 4.6%) and Italian being third ( 0.8%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 39.8% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (22.5%), the FDP (13.8%) and the Green Party (7.2%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0-19 years old) make up 24.8% of the population, while adults (20-64 years old) make up 60.7% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 14.5%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Safnern about 82.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).
Safnern has an unemployment rate of 0.89%.
