The term “catholic” refers to the word Greek word “καθολικό" (katholiko) which means “universal”. It is to express the fact that the Orthodox Church itself is universal. This term should not be confused with today’s Catholic Church - a separate Christian denomination with its own doctrine that broke off from what we know today as the Orthodox Church in the year 1054AD.
