And who's the supposed "authority" of whether or not you've interpreted the rule right? How about you look at the ledes of Wire Recording and Phonograph Cylinder as good examples? There are some other computer ones as well.

Also, how do you figure that you're not just misinterpreting the rule, and that it isn't just referring to things that have happened and no longer exist as such, like "George W. Bush WAS the 43rd president of the United States"?

Then why don't you go and "fix" all the other things that were written in present tense a long time ago? Why focus on just this one?

Nope, because plenty of articles here about TV shows, movies, and plays, etc., that keep on existing though they are very old, are written in *present* tense. Look at so many other articles like the one about the phonograph cylinder or Casablanca, etc.
