Sitara for the door of the Kaaba, 1606

... that the basic design for the sitaras that decorate the Kaaba (example pictured) dates back to the 16th century? "The earliest known example of the door curtain [i.e. sitara] was made in Egypt and dates to 1544. [...] The design of the sitara and the hizam was quickly established and although there were a number of variations in the inscriptions and they grew ever more elaborate [...], the basic forms have remained virtually unchanged until the present day."
