West Township is one of fifteen townships in Effingham County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2020 census, its population was 444 and it contained 181 housing units.[1]

Geography

According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, West Township (T6N R4E) has a total area of 36.96 square miles (95.73 km2), of which 36.92 square miles (95.62 km2) (or 99.90%) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (or 0.10%) is water.[2]

Demographics

As of the 2020 census[1] there were 444 people, 150 households, and 94 families residing in the township. The population density was 12.01 inhabitants per square mile (4.64/km2). There were 181 housing units at an average density of 4.90 per square mile (1.89/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 97.07% White, 0.90% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.45% of the population.

There were 150 households, out of which 23.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.67% were married couples living together, 0.00% had a female householder with no spouse present, and 37.33% were non-families. 20.70% of all households were made up of individuals, and 0.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.77.

The township's age distribution consisted of 22.0% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 10.8% from 25 to 44, 35.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49.4 years. For every 100 females, there were 100.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $87,500, and the median income for a family was $96,071. Males had a median income of $55,536 versus $28,333 for females. The per capita income for the township was $29,736.
