List of international cricket five-wicket hauls by Mitchell Johnson[edit]

List of international cricket five-wicket hauls by Mitchell Johnson (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Nominator(s): NG39 (talk) 07:42, 20 September 2014 (UTC), Macosal (talk) 07:42, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This article was created by Macosal. Then their was one more edit from Macosal and then an edit from FrescoBot. And finally my one edit. You might ask how can a list with only four revisions be up to FL standard and how can a nom only have made one edit to it. Well Macosal's original article was very good and my edit took seven hours and had at least 100 "show previews". In that edit; I completely rewrote the lead, added 2 pictures and more references. Since this nom was filed I have done another four edits (2 DAB fixes, 1 ref fix and a key change). This is my first FLC so any comments positive or negative are welcome -- NickGibson3900 Talk 07:42, 20 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment – Did you have a word with Macosal prior to initiating this nomination? Vensatry (ping) 04:18, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Vensatry:, I mentioned it on his talk page but he hasn't replied. Considering I wrote all the prose and kept the actual list bit he did I don't see your point - NickGibson3900 Talk 04:48, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes can confirm I was made aware of the nomination on my talk page. Macosal (talk) 06:39, 21 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
NickGibson3900, I was just asking you. I see that you have added Macosal as a co-nom. Vensatry (ping) 18:09, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Vensatry: Ok cool, sorry for any misunderstanding. BTW would who like to do a full review of this. Your choice. NickGibson3900 Talk 05:25, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Would you like to have a look at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of ICC Champions Trophy centuries/archive1 and Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of Asia Cup centuries/archive1? Vensatry (ping) 18:06, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comments—
  • ...as of August 2014 only 41 bowlers have taken 15... → 42 bowlers have taken 15 or more fifers
  • "Johnson ranks ninth in the number of international five-wicket hauls among Australian cricketers[a] and equal 39th among all players." → "He ranks thirty-ninth among all-time combined five-wicket haul takers, and ninth in the equivalent list for Australia." Shifting the existing note at the end of the sentence, also consider adding a not after the comma like He shares the position with Alec Bedser, Danish Kaneria and Craig McDermott. Also provide inline citations for them.
  • The GABBA → the GABBA
  • His best haul of wickets is 8 wickets for 61 runs... → "His best bowling figures for an innings are 8 wickets for 61 runs."
  • In the Key table: "Result for the India team" → this should be Australia not India
  • Wkts column should sort secondarily to the Runs column. Wkts column also needs rowscopes
  • Link "Drawn"
  • Date for the first ref is 16 August 2008
  • You are using both dmy and mdy, be consistent with the date format

I'll revisit again once the above concerns resolve. --Khadar Khani (talk) 03:36, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Sahara4u: Thanks for your comments. I think I've addressed them all. -- NickGibson3900 Talk 07:55, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • It should be "as of September 2014" throughout the article
  • Johnson is ranked equal thirty-ninth with Alec Bedser, Craig McDermott and Danish Kaneria. --Khadar Khani (talk) 11:40, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Sahara4u: Done both points - NickGibson3900 Talk 05:40, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comments from Vensatry (ping)
  • 15 or more five-wicket hauls at international level in their cricketing careers -> 15 or more five-wicket hauls at the international level
  • Hyphens in dates (refs.) should be replaced by dashes.
  • With 15 fifers, his position is joint with Craig McDermott and Danish Kaneria. This should be noted rather than a list of players who have taken more fifers than him.
  • Ref #3 and #5 are from the same publisher and convey the same thing. Either one should be sufficient.
  • "Johnson made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2007" is unsourced
  • "His first five-wicket haul came against New Zealand during the first Test of the 2008–09 series at the Gabba" - The ref. doesn't mention anywhere that this was his first fifer in Test cricket. Refs #7 and #6 should be interchanged to make things better.
Sorry but as the ref numbers have jumped around which ones do you mean. Please say the title not the number - NickGibson3900 Talk 06:29, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shift ref #5 to the end of "Australians' victory by 149 runs." Vensatry (ping) 19:18, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That was done by @The-Pope: I'll revert if The-Pope doesn't good a valid reason for the change. - NickGibson3900 Talk 06:11, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Having the key before the list looks awful. It is huge, ugly, irrelevant for a lot of people viewing the article and distracting from the actual information. When I complained about a similar issue with football stats, someone put it off to the right and I thought that that was a great idea. If you can align it better, then fine, but I hate every single one of these cookie cutter copies of feature lists that highlights HOW we are telling the reader the information over the actual information. The Key had it's own section heading, FFS. If you don't like it on the right, move it to the end, make it smaller, use inline notes or whatever, but it is a blight on the lists to have the Key in such a prominent position. I would have rejected all of them as feature lists with such an poor article design. The-Pope (talk) 06:52, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@The-Pope: I have mentioned it to WikiProject Cricket here and there is already strong opposition - NickGibson3900 Talk 07:50, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
//Having the key before the list looks awful// Really? If so where should we place the key? end of the page?. NickGibson3900, User:The-Pope's argument is pretty much a case of WP:IDL. So it's better if we ignore it. Vensatry (ping) 19:18, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Why wickets column is emboldened?
  • Since both the tables have equal number of columns, I'd like to see uniformity in width.
  • Wickets columns should sort secondarily by runs conceded.
How would I do that? - NickGibson3900 Talk 06:45, 24 September 2014 (UTC) Done - 09:26, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Link Orient Blackswan in refs.
  • Ref #7 needs date
Once again which ref? - NickGibson3900 Talk 06:45, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ref #6 at present Vensatry (ping) 19:18, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Check the title for ref #11. It talks about an ODI game.
This is not done. Check the title of the page Vensatry (ping) 19:18, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • His first ODI fifer came against India, not West Indies.
    • The succeeding sentence also needs to be corrected. Vensatry (ping) 19:18, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • "His career best figures are 6 wickets for 31 against ...". Something is missing here.

Vensatry (ping) 17:57, 23 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Vensatry: All done, will comment of your FLCs soon - NickGibson3900 Talk 07:55, 26 September 2014 (UTC) Vensatry Done I think. - NickGibson3900 Talk 05:39, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@The Rambling Man: Thanks for the review! Done point 1, 2, 4. As stated above I'm not sure how to do point three. - NickGibson3900 Talk 09:08, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at the sort key coding on an existing FL of this type. The Rambling Man (talk) 09:10, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@The Rambling Man: thanks for the tip. I worked it out and it should be fine now. Any more comments or is this list okay now? - NickGibson3900 Talk 07:55, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • How about "Johnson has taken 264 wickets in Test matches, 212 wickets in ODIs and 38 wickets in T20Is."
  • Partly done, I changed the above but left: As of September,
  • "His best bowling figures for an innings are 8 wickets for 61 runs against"
  • Already done
  • "His 5 wickets..." sentence. How about "His 5 wickets for 39 runs in the second innings raised his tally to 9 wickets for the match. Australia won the match by 149 runs and his performance earned him the man-of-the-match award."
  • Done
  • How about instead of "The majority of his fifers came against England—5 of his 12 in Test cricket --> In Test matches, Johnson has been most successful against England, taking 5 of his 12 five-wicket hauls against them.
  • Done
  • Instead of "Making his ODI debut against New Zealand in 2005, Johnson's first five-wicket haul came against India in 2007." These two fragments are not connected to each other. How about "In 2005, Johnson made his ODI debut against New Zealand. He took his first five-wicket haul against India in 2007."
  • Done
  • Alt text is not appropriate for the images. As per WP:ALT, the alt text should not comment on clothes unless it's a fashion article and should include the person's name.
  • Fixed
