Until today the image was used in the article Microtubule. However, as someone on the discussion page noticed, there seemed to be a problem with the label of the fluorescent parts in the picture. According to the caption on the NIH website where the image is from, the fluorescent red structures are actin. However, user Eszcze suspected that those structures rather look like mitochondria, not actin. I agreed, so I decided to email the author of the image, Tina Carvalho, who sent me a lengthy reply explaining that the image is very old, problematic for technical reasons and that it was never meant to be released into the public domain in the first place. The image caption was not written by her. Unfortunately, she could not locate her notes on that particular image but believes the red is actually MitoTracker Red and those are mitochondria, not actin filaments. Therefore the caption of the image is most likely incorrect. Since even the author of the image can not say with certainty which structure of the cell has been stained here, I believe the image should be deleted to avoid further confusion. There are already plenty of other similar images available here that show the parts of the cytoskeleton and where there is no ambiguity about what is what. Thanks for your trust :) Anyone who would like to confirm what I wrote above, can get in touch with Tina Carvalho (the author of the image) here. I didn't want to post her full email verbatim here without permission. SPLETTE :] How's my driving? 21:15, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
