Winston Utomo was born and raised in Surabaya. He is the elder brother of William Utomo.[2] Winston studied undergraduate at the University of Southern California – Marshall School of Business and Master's at Columbia University in New York with magna cum laude honors.[3]
After completing his master's degree, Winston continued his career by working at Google in Singapore. While working there, Winston got the inspiration to establish a media company targeting the millennial and gen z generations in Indonesia. IDN Media was founded on June 8, 2014.[4] Together with William Utomo, Winston grew IDN Media to become one of the largest technology media companies in Indonesia.[5][6]
Since its founding, IDN Media has received five series of funding, the latest being Series D funding. IDN Media, which at that time was still known as IDN Times, received its first seed investment funding on September 7, 2015, from East Ventures.[7] The following year, on September 5, 2016, IDN Media obtained Series A funding from North Base Media and several other investors, such as GDP Venture (Djarum), East Ventures, and a film company in the United States, MNM Creative.[8]
On November 21, 2017, IDN Media received Series B funding from East Ventures and Central Exchange Hong Kong.[9][10] Afterwards, on January 8, 2019, IDN Media obtained Series C funding from EV Growth, a venture company which is a combination of East Ventures, Sinar Mas, and Yahoo! Japan, Charoen Pokphand, and LINE Venture.[11][12]
On June 6, 2022, IDN Media received Series D funding from Mayapada and KMIF (an investment company from several large Indonesian conglomerate groups). Other investors are East Ventures, OCBC NISP Ventura, Dentsu Group, and V Media Ventures.[13] This makes IDN Media one of the largest media companies in Southeast Asia.
Winston is the leader of Global Shapers Jakarta by World Economic Forum.[citation needed] He was also awarded in the 2022 Gen.T List by Tatler Asia.[14]
