Khanafereh (Persian: خنافره), formerly Khorusi-ye Jonubi (خروسي جنوبي), also Romanized as Khorūsī-ye Jonūbī,[3] is a city in, and the capital of, Khanafereh District of Shadegan County, Khuzestan province, Iran.[4] It also serves as the administrative center for Salami Rural District (formerly Khanafereh Rural District).[5]
At the 2006 census, its population was 3,759 in 609 households, when it was the village of Khorusi-ye Jonubi in the former Khanafereh Rural District of the Central District.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 3,633 people in 831 households,[7] by which time the village had been transferred to Salami Rural District in the newly established Khanafereh District.[4] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 3,853 people in 958 households,[2] when the village had been elevated to the status of a city and renamed Khanafereh.[8]
