Discussion and unexplained format reverts happened in these cases, just if might be able to clear things. Even few seasons have linked non-existing club:

Pedro Muñoz (Chilean footballer)

Happy New Years and hope you had a great holiday break!

Also, any chance you can merge Pedro Muñoz (Chilean footballer) into Pedro Emiliano Muñoz, with the title "Pedro Muñoz (Chilean footballer)". They are duplicate pages that have been around for years now. Cheers!--Ortizesp (talk) 03:38, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

No, their histories are parallel. You just need to redirect one to the other. GiantSnowman 18:49, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Date format changes

Hi, I'm confused by your recent edit to William Bronston which changed the date format in the references only. Consistency is only required in the body of the article and I don't believe it's helpful to change the date format for the references away from YYYY-MM-DD without any real reason. ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 19:14, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Which dates remain unchanged in the body? I cannot see anything. The script should change everything. GiantSnowman 19:18, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
That's my confusion. As far as I'm aware, there's no requirement or need for the date format in the references to be aligned with that in the body. ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 19:19, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
It's standard per MOS:DATEFORMAT, certainly a lot more easily readable than YYYY-MM-DD. GiantSnowman 19:25, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I do not see that anywhere in the text there, in fact it states that the YYYY-MM-DD date format is perfectly acceptable in the references section. Is there a specific quote or section you could point me towards that says otherwise? Otherwise this undiscussed change only serves to be disruptive. ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 19:47, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Under the 'Formats' section, it details the YYYY-MM-DD format as to be used "Only in limited situations where brevity is helpful", and states "By default, Wikipedia does not abbreviate dates. Use a consistent citation style within any one article." Only very, very limited articles use YYYY-MM-DD, why should this? Accusations of disruption are entirely bad faith and unfounded. GiantSnowman 21:56, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
To be very clear, I'm not accusing you of being disruptive, I'm describing the undiscussed change as disruptive. The section specifically states that situations where brevity is helpful include tables, infoboxes, [and] references so that's a moot point. No part of the guidelines discourages the use of YYYY-MM-DD dates in the reference section and I disagree with your assertion that YYYY-MM-DD is somehow more difficult to read.
In addition, WP:CITEVAR states that Where Wikipedia does not mandate a specific [date] style, editors should not attempt to convert Wikipedia to their own preferred style, nor should they edit articles for the sole purpose of converting them to their preferred style, or removing examples of, or references to, styles which they dislike. and that ...it is normal practice to defer to the style used by the first major contributor or adopted by the consensus of editors already working on the page, unless a change in consensus has been achieved. ~ F4U (talkthey/it) 22:22, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
You have not answered my question about why this is needed. GiantSnowman 11:54, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

ARCA resolved by motion

Hi GiantSnowman,

The ARCA you filed has been resolved by motion as follows:

Remedy 1.2 of the GiantSnowman case ("GiantSnowman admonished and placed under review") is amended to read as follows:

1.2) GiantSnowman is admonished for overuse of the rollback and blocking functions, and reminded to "lead by example" and "strive to model appropriate standards of courtesy"; to "respond promptly and civilly to queries about their Wikipedia-related conduct and administrative actions and to justify them when needed"; to not use admin tools in "cases in which they have been involved" including "conflicts with an editor" and "disputes on topics"; to "treat newcomers with kindness and patience"; and to apply these principles in all interactions with all editors.

With the exception of obvious vandalism or obvious violations of the policy on biographies of living persons:

  • GiantSnowman is prohibited from reverting another editor's contribution without providing an explanation in the edit summary. Default edit summaries provided by MediaWiki or user scripts are not sufficient for the purpose of this restriction. For the avoidance of doubt, use of MediaWiki rollback with an edit summary via a user script such as this one, or via massRollback.js, is permitted.
  • GiantSnowman is prohibited from blocking an editor who has not been recently warned for the conduct in question. For the purposes of this restriction, "recently" is assumed to be within 7 days.

Violations may be reported by any editor to the Arbitration Enforcement noticeboard. GiantSnowman may appeal these restrictions directly to the Arbitration Committee at any time.

For the Arbitration Committee, firefly ( t · c ) 19:10, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Thank you. GiantSnowman 19:14, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Youth career

Hello GiantSnowman. On Ethan Mbappé-- I won't change your revert, because it's true that Ethan Mbappé hasn't yet played a match for the youth team in 2024. But when he does, his youth career must be reopened. I understand you may disagree, but for me, the youth career continues until he has played his final youth game. That's how it should be. Just like we don't close the "reserve" career before a player plays his final reserve game. A player can be both a youth player and senior player at the same time, just like a player can be both a reserve and senior player at the same time. Hell, a player could be all three at the same time.
So for now, it's fine. But when (most likely) he goes back to starting and playing with the U19s, I will go back and open his youth career. Paul Vaurie (talk) 19:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Your way is too confusing. When do you make the cut off? GiantSnowman 21:48, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
When the player no longer plays for the youth team and only plays for the senior/reserve team. In cases where you can't find sources about the player's youth career, I understand why you should cut off at the senior debut, but for such a prominent club like PSG, I can find literally every line-up for the under-19s and under-17s if I look hard enough. Also, in France, youth football is only up to age 19, and the cut off-date is the year of birth+19 years. For example, Ethan Mbappé will no longer be able to play youth football at the start of the 2025–26 season, because 2006+19=2025. So that usually also helps for cutting off certain players that make their senior debut at age 18-19 in their final season of youth football eligibility.
I understand why cutting it off at the senior debut date might be easier, but if we're looking for accuracy, we shouldn't just close the youth career when the player is still playing youth football. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:54, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Examples: Xavi Simons - he played in the UEFA Youth League for PSG in February 2022, but made his senior debut in February 2021. Kays Ruiz-Atil - he went back to play for the under-19s after having played six months on the senior team. I usually leave invisible comments so people know why the youth career and senior career overlap. Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:57, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
But players play with youth teams into their 30s - usually for fitness or discipline reasons! GiantSnowman 18:44, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Well, training and being a part of a team is different, right? Players older than the age limit cannot play youth football in France, at least. Paul Vaurie (talk) 21:06, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Overage players can play in certain competitions, not just train. What about if he doesn't play for the youth team for 2 years? GiantSnowman 21:56, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I guess it would be country-by-country, then. I can only speak for France, and in France, youth football is age-restricted. We also don't have under-23 leagues. I'm not sure about what you mean by the 2 year thing. Paul Vaurie (talk) 02:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
If he doesn't play for the youth team again until 2026, are you going to have an infobox like (for example):
((Infobox football biography
|youthyears1 = 2017–2023
|youthclubs1 = Paris Saint-Germain
|youthyears2 = 2026–
|youthclubs2 = Paris Saint-Germain
|years1 = 2023–2026
|clubs1 = Paris Saint-Germain
|caps1 = 15
|goals1 = 0
)) GiantSnowman 18:26, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
Giantsnowman, you've just demonstrated not only your lack of ability to listen, but also your lack of knowledge about French football. Ethan Mbappé will not be allowed to play with youth teams after 30 June 2025. Per WP:CIR I kindly advise you to understand your own abilities and competencies, and avoid editing in this area. And do keep in mind the insults they have been directing towards others in their talkpage! The one in Indonesian reads roughly "Thanks for the suggestions and guidelines, i hope they are useful and that i am able to edit according to policies and specific instructions", but the one directed to you on 10 January (in "English") is dead serious.

Speedy deletion nomination of List of association football players who died during their careers

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on List of association football players who died during their careers requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of association footballers who died during their careers. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Jasin Assehnoun

Hey, I was wondering about the edit you reverted in Jasin Assehnoun article. He is half Finnish and half Moroccan, considered to be Finnish and Moroccan 50/50 "equally", so why those categories don't apply? Syvä-äksy (talk) 19:02, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Just because he is a footballer who holds Moroccan citizenship (through descent) does not mean that he is a 'Moroccan footballer'. GiantSnowman 19:03, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Paul Onuachu

Hi. I’ve no intention of reverting you (I have far too much respect for your experience) but can you explain why you consider that Soccerway is a better source than Soccerbase. I find Soccerway very difficult to interpret, with far too many (unexplained) symbols. I’d be interested in your explanation. Daemonickangaroo2018 (talk) 19:08, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Soccerbase is only really useful, in my experience, for English & Scottish league players - although I agree Soccerway is overly complicated! GiantSnowman 19:09, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
Ok - that’s fine Daemonickangaroo2018 (talk) 19:13, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Vulgar vandalism

Already logged off and now am going to bed, but before i do so this: I see you have already warned this "user" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:UltramanZeroAwokkkk#February_2023), have a look at what they did at Natxo Insa; following a (supposedly) bad performance for Malaysia, this "person" went on a rampage of despicable insults towards the player.

Vandalism was so much and of so much "quality" the patrollers forgot to fix vandalism in the subject's full name, i took care of that even though i know i'll be accused of vandalism in edit summary notes in spite of doing the exact opposite :(

Attentively, enjoy the rest of your evening 2001:8A0:765C:E100:EC25:510:13AD:99E8 (talk) 23:13, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

I have given them a final warning. GiantSnowman 19:02, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Amos Nondi

@GiantSnowman:, You protected Amos Nondi from page creation 7 years ago but his career has progressed a lot since then and I created Draft:Amos Nondi (2), woudl you be able to unprotect Amos Nondi from creation and/or move my draft to mainspace? Thanks, Das osmnezz (talk) 09:47, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Done - in future, please do not create 'rival' drafts to existing drafts, instead edit and improve the existing draft. GiantSnowman 17:14, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

What you left on my talk page,

@GiantSnowman, as per Wikipedia:Do not bite the newcomers, to avoid being a "biter" to newcomers, rather than deleting in the form of reverting an incorrect edit from someone inexperienced, you should attempt to rectify any errors. In my opinion you didn't follow this guideline when you reverted my edit on Connor Parsons and then rather bluntly threatened me with a ban on my talk page and I don't feel this is fair. I understand you're infinitely more experienced on matters such as these so correct me (nicely this time..?) if I have made any errors in my reasoning but due to my edits being mostly spelling corrections on low-traction pages, I am - to any significant contributions on the site - a newcomer and thus should likely be treated as described on the guideline previously linked. Please get back to me on this :)

SPAG checker (talk) 22:59, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

You have been left numerous messages about your conduct, which has continued with the same issues arising, and so the warning messages have escalated per WP:WARN. GiantSnowman 23:01, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
So WP:WARN is clearly specified to override Wikipedia:Do not bite the newcomers? Plus, out of context it sounds bad and yet these are trivial errors by a newcomer and thus I'd personally appreciate I wasn't threatened with retrospective punishment as you did. Your reply has hardly been satisfactory considering you haven't addressed why you ignored the guideline I linked? If you explained another one of Wikipedia's mounds of obscure guidelines in that such and such rule does not apply in such and such situation, I accept that but as far as I can see you still haven't followed WP:Do not bite the newcomers. I respect you as an admin but I still don't think this is fair and I do feel a little warded off by all of this which is what the guideline I linked was specifically meant to reduce the occurence of... Oh, and you still haven't clarified why you reverted the edit rather than correcting it, another possible non-abidence of WP:Do not bite the newcomers...
SPAG checker (talk) 23:23, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
(by talk reader) I'm disappointed that you've taken this approach, SPAG. The messages left on your user talk pages are boilerplate agreed by the editing community in our user warning templates. If those boilerplate messages angered you then I'm afraid you won't make it here on Wikipedia. Wikipedia encounters a lot of ne'er-do-wells and our user warning templates are one-size-fits-all so they have to address the bad faith vandals just the same as the shrinking violet crybullies. I think had you approached with humility you would take those messages onboard, rather than foolishly try to reproach GiantSnowman, who is far kinder than I am. So you see, sticking to boilerplate is meant to protect you, the new user, from personally written messages like this. With that appreciation please see that your bad behavior triggers warnings and if you don't want warnings (or worse) just stop making problematic edits. Chris Troutman (talk) 00:02, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
To be fair, the warnings were because of forgetting to add a source (and separated by several months), it wasn't really a behavior issue that began this. ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 00:30, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
@Chaotic Enby: Yes, I didn't bother looking at the edits in question as it seems laughable a new editor thinks an admin should just clean up the mess left behind rather than revert and issue a warning. What drew my attention was the attempted tone policing on this talk page (SPAG accusing GiantSnowman of biting newcomers). Chris Troutman (talk) 00:42, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
Again, there might be a misunderstanding going on. It doesn't look like the user was asking the admin to clean up any mess, but just questioning why a level-3 escalating warning was given despite only one warning having been given months before. The issue is not really that an admin reverted and warned, but that the warning chosen was unnecessarily threatening. ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 00:48, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
I don't think we misunderstand. SPAG added content without a source and got a level 2 warning. 65 days later it was the same problem and got a level 3 warning. I don't agree that GiantSnowman unreasonably escalated the situation or was unkind. If this was an IP we could argue this wasn't necessarily the same editor. This is a registered user, it was the same problem of not adding a citation, and it was a boilerplate warning. And this un-accomplished Wikipedian with less than three hundred edits complains that they've been bitten? Ludricrous. Chris Troutman (talk) 00:56, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
I'd say calling someone "unaccomplished" and bringing up edit count isn't the best way to go at it, especially since WP:BITE is specifically about how to behave with newer editors. It's "don't bite the newbies", not "don't bite the accomplished Wikipedians". ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 01:17, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
I spend far too much of my time cleaning ups after 'newbies' (their account is over 2 years old, they have over 200 edits) who cannot comply with the basic requirements of editing. GiantSnowman 12:50, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I understand how it can get pretty tiring in the long run. Good luck! ChaotıċEnby(talk · contribs) 12:53, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
As far as I can see, forgetting to add a source is a trivial matter. It is not "bad behaviour", honestly it's outrageous you would even suggest that, and it is not necessarily a "problematic edit", especially given these are two warnings - from the same moderator - from trivial isolated incidents months apart, and *especially* given I am considered in most regards a newcomer as you yourself admitted. You, just like GiantSnowman himself, haven't addressed him not following the guidelines of WP:Do not bite the newcomers in that he reverted my edit rather than correcting it, and in terms of non-"boilerplate" responses, doubling down on his impoliteness towards me. Maybe I'm far from perfect in my handling of this situation but I feel you have been even less so.
SPAG checker (talk) 00:39, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
No, it's not trivial, editors are regularly and routinely blocked for it. WP:RS and WP:V and WP:BLP all apply as you have already been told. GiantSnowman 12:52, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Charles Wood (footballer)

Notice

The article Charles Wood (footballer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

There is already a disambig for Charles Wood, there seem to be no pages linking to "Charles Wood (footballer)", and the page to which this currently directs - Charlie Wood (footballer) - seems to be for someone to whom literally nobody ever refers as Charles Wood, so there is no risk of wrongful searching. If this is not a disambig category I do not see why there needs to be a redirect to a footballer who has never played in the top 120 clubs in England, especially as other Charles Woods are far more prominent.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the ((proposed deletion/dated)) notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing ((proposed deletion/dated)) will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Am proposing a deletion of Charles Wood (footballer) - it seems to be a redirect of no use, and redirects to the less prominent Charles Wood (footballer).

Sockpuppetry

Please see this (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Carlos_Fortes_(footballer,_born_1994)&diff=prev&oldid=1202798598). Transfer added without a source, i reverted citing precisely that reason, was immediately reverted, AGAIN with no source! I profit from the occasion to comment that i see you have already warned this user.

Speaking of "user", due to their main interest (Indonesian football, following a quick glance at the history of contributions) i'm almost 100% sure this is a sock of User:Dwinug.

P.S. I have already reverted again in Mr. Fortes, would not be the least surprised if the other person had done the same to me. Attentively RevampedEditor (talk) 16:25, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Please use WP:SPI. GiantSnowman 16:26, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Done! Don't know if i did it in the right place, this was why i came to you; sorry to bother you, apparently! Regarding the player's transfer, it seems to be correct, i grew tired of the other nuisance and sourced the page myself. --RevampedEditor (talk) 16:42, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

You need to create a subpage, see the section/box headed 'How to open an investigation'. GiantSnowman 16:59, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Regarding your reversion of my insertion of bad grammar at WP:BLP

That's fine. I know the subjunctive mood is archaic, pretentious and terrible.

My bad edit can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons&diff=prev&oldid=1203307604 123957a (talk) 17:23, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Your change to the grammar makes no sense. GiantSnowman 17:26, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Or, should I say more accurately, less sense than the stable version. GiantSnowman 17:27, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
I thought it meant the same thing... whatever. I will NEVER edit policy pages again if that's what is required from me to be a good editor! 123957a (talk) 17:33, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
We're not saying that. People are encouraged to WP:BEBOLD and make changes that might need changing - the issue was your the restoration, which was the disruptive element, not the original edit! GiantSnowman 17:35, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I know not to edit war... I was just trying to accomplish something big and get attention. 123957a (talk) 17:39, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
By that, I mean making a big improvement, not edit warring! 123957a (talk) 17:40, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
but a minor change to grammar is not a "big improvement". GiantSnowman 18:19, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman If you must gain consensus on the talk page before any edit goes through, they should just full-protect the page instead of semi-protecting it, to reduce disruption and save editors' time. 123957a (talk) 18:22, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Again, that is not what I said. Respectfully, the more you post here, the more I have concerns about your competence and understanding. GiantSnowman 18:23, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: User:Valjean told me I need to get consensus on the talk page first. 123957a (talk) 18:30, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
No, I didn't say that. You are really wasting our time. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 20:04, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
I am not Valjean. GiantSnowman 18:34, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: I know you and Valjean were saying the same thing: both condemned my behavior because it was out of line with WP:BRD. 123957a (talk) 18:42, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
And now we're condemning your behaviour because you are being disruptive and potentially trolling, referring to your 'bad edit' and repeatedly saying that it is " archaic, pretentious and terrible". Stop posting here and find something else to do. GiantSnowman 21:03, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman,
Valjean called it 'bad grammar' and I've heard people criticize the subjunctive as outdated/archaic.
I don't care whether it's used or not, and I'll stop wasting everyone's time on this. Let's move on. 123957a (talk) 21:55, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, I made a mistake in my above comment. I actually meant to say "GiantSnowman told me I need to get consensus on the talk page first.", see this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons&diff=prev&oldid=1203324223 123957a (talk) 14:17, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
That is not what I said. I said you should get consensus given your initial edit was reverted. GiantSnowman 19:15, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Script changing dates in citations

Hello, GinatSnowman. I noticed you were using a script to standardize dates in the Month day, Year format, which is great. However, you have left your script with the option turned on to also do that within citations. May I suggest turning it off? MOS:NUM subentry MOS:DATE specifically calls out citations as having different rules. That references WP:CITESTYLE, which specifically allows the other formats, but recommends consistency within an article.

The article where I noticed your efforts already was already consistent in date citations, using YYYY-MM-DD style, which is also the style that the automatic citation maker uses. The latter is probably going to make that format de facto standard over time, and using the script to make the changes is likely to lead to inconsistencies (as other edtors add automated citations). In any event, please consider turning off the citation change option in the script, and continuing to use it in article text. Dovid (talk) 20:39, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

It is not my script, and in any event I see no benefit to having the references in a different format to the rest of the article. GiantSnowman 21:26, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
