The DC Universe (DCU) is an American media franchise and shared fictional universe that is the setting of superhero films and television series produced by DC Studios, based on characters that appear in DC Comics publications. DC Studios developed the DCU as a "soft reboot" of the prior DC Comics-based franchise the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) that retains certain cast members of the DCEU while replacing others. No actor would be playing multiple characters, with DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran expecting the same actors to play characters across mediums, including animation. The DCU's first slate of content is Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which includes five feature films: Superman (2025), The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing, and five series: the animated Creature Commandos (2024), Waller (2024), Lanterns, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, and the second season of Peacemaker. An untitled Arkham series is also in development for the DCU. As the franchise will be composed of films and series adapted from a variety of DC Comics properties, there will be multiple lead actors.
David Corenswet will headline Superman as Clark Kent / Superman and Milly Alcock will headline Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl. Frank Grillo will headline the animated series Creature Commandos as Rick Flag Sr. alongside Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, the series' main protagonist. Viola Davis will reprise her DCEU role as Amanda Waller in Creature Commandos and will headline her own series, Waller. Additional cast members from the first season of Peacemaker (2022) reprise their roles in Waller, including Steve Agee as John Economos, who also returns for Creature Commandos alongside Sean Gunn, returning as Weasel from The Suicide Squad (2021), who also voices G.I. Robot in that series and will portray Maxwell Lord in Superman.
