Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires (also known as Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios[1]) is an upcoming animated superhero film. It is a collaboration between Ánima with Warner Bros. Animation, with Juan Meza-León as director.[1] The film will premiere on Max Latin America.[2]
The father of Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec boy, is murdered by Spanish conquistadors. Following this, he then warns King Moctezuma of danger, and works with those in the temple of Tzinacan to develop weaponry, and equipment, to face the Spanish invaders.[1]
On June 13, 2022, at the Guadalajara International Film Festival, HBO Max Latin America announced that the production of Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires had begun. It is the first ever collaboration of Ánima with Warner Bros. Animation, and is directed by Juan Meza-León while Anima's José C. García de Letona and Fernando De Fuentes are producers.[2] The film is based on DC Comics characters, like Batman, and will be completely produced in Mexico.[5] The film also has Sam Register and Tomás Yankelevich as executive producers, and Alejandro Diaz Barriga as a cultural consultant.[1][6]
Some reviewers said that the collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation and Latin American companies is likely "one of many", noting that HBO Max Latin America is aiming to "release 50-70 Latin America-branch originals" by 2023.[7][8] It was also announced that Horacio Garcia Rojas will voice Yohualli in the series.[4] In September 2022, it was further announced that Aaron D. Berger and Carina Schulze would be part of the film's production team.[3] A specific release date has not yet been announced.
