Vijay Nirani (born 15 July 1993) is an Indian entrepreneur and business executive, currently serving as managing director of TruAlt Bioenergy Limited,[1] a biofuels and bioenergy company in Asia. With a background in accounting, finance, and global family-managed business, Nirani's work in the Indian bioenergy sector has included the establishment of the country's first and largest ethanol plant and the transformation of sugar mills into bioenergy parks.[2][3]

Family and early life

Vijay Nirani was born on 15 July 1993 in Mudhol, a small agricultural town in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. Growing up in an environment deeply rooted in the sugarcane industry and farming, Nirani developed a keen interest in business and finance from a young age.[4] For his schooling, he attended Jain International Residential School in Bangalore, where he completed his education up to the 12th grade.[5][6]

Viyay Nirani's father is Dr. Murugesh R Nirani, former Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries and Minister for Mines and Geology in the Government of Karnataka, as well as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Bilgi constituency.[7] Viyay's mother, Smt. Kamala Nirani, manages the educational institutions associated with their family group[8]. Vijay Nirani's extended family also includes his uncle, Shri. Hanamant Nirani, who has been a Member of the Legislative Council in Karnataka, representing North Karnataka.[9] Vijay Nirani is married to Susmitha Vijay Nirani, and they have two sons, Samarth and Veer Nirani.

Career

Under Nirani's leadership, TruAlt Bioenergy grew to a production capacity close to 2,000 kilo litres per day.[10] It also set up the largest ethanol plant in Karnataka India to help with this production.[11] The organization supports farmers by providing additional income and contributes to India's goal of reducing dependence on imported crude oil, thereby saving foreign exchange and increasing revenue for sugar mills.[12] This aligns with the government's efforts to boost biofuel production and reach a 20% ethanol blending target by 2025, as part of the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program.[13]

Nirani has diversified the operations of traditional sugar mills into bioenergy parks. This utilizes excess sugarcane and helps in the production of sustainable energy under the TruAlt Bioenergy name. This initiative helped them set up 2G ethanol plants in Karnataka.[14][15]

In 2021, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Leafiniti Bioenergy Limited, TruAlt Bioenergy established India’s second Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant under the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme. This venture, in collaboration with GAIL India, involves an investment of over $72 million for setting up ten CBG plants. These plants aim to process over 600 million kgs of organic waste annually, producing significant quantities of CBG and organic manure, thereby creating employment opportunities for over 600 individuals.[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]
