No information about background in RSA? i.e what did her father do?
Not that I have found. I did come across some information about an uncle in Cape Town, which isn't in the article, but not about the father. I found a funeral notice for him, but it didn't say anything about him either. hamiltonstone (talk) 23:24, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The family migrated to Australia in 1883 where Florence worked as a governess, while undertaking studies in art. - see I'd put the comma after the "where" not the "while"....?
Damn - was at Rookwood last week - be good to find her gravestone and take a snap. Might do so next wednesday when I drive past it...hmmm.
That would be interesting to see whether there is a gravestone. Rookwood is a fantastic place to visit. If you go, it is: Area :IN Section :J Grave number 207. hamiltonstone (talk) 00:17, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It appears Florence Fuller's father John Hobson Fuller died suddenly 23 February 1878 when she was about 11: death notice.
The death notice indicates that he was 49 at death, suggesting her father was England-born, 18 August 1828, parents Andrew Gunton Fuller and Esther: BDM record here.
Marriage of Andrew Gunton Fuller to Ester Hobson, 17 May 1821, Guilsborough, Northampton, England: BDM record here.
Death of Florence's mother: 8 October 1900, age 70, at Cooinoo, Blackburn. death notice
It appears Dowling was not Florence Fuller's uncle, but was her mother, Louisa's, cousin. However, all WP:RS sources use the word "uncle", so any change will need to await a published reliable source. hamiltonstone (talk) 13:23, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
NB: Had a look in Rookwood yesterday - the area where the grave is, the graves are laid out chronologically and there were a few patches where graves were unmarked. I might be wrong but I suspect hers is one of those as I couldn't find a headstone. Cas Liber (talk·contribs) 22:02, 13 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Florence Fuller was my great grandmother's first cousin. Florence was the daughter of John Hobson Fuller and Louisa Fuller nee Vines. Robert Dowling was not Florence's uncle. Florence's mother's sister, Ellen Vines, married Benjamin Dowling, Robert Dowling's brother. Benjamin and Robert Dowling's brother henry had a son John Tayspill Dowling who married Ellen and Louisa's sister Mary Ann Vines. Charles Carty Lance was actually Charles Carey Lance. I can supply sources for this information if useful but I would prefer not to amend the article myself as I am not sufficiently skilled in using Wikipedia. John Hobson Fuller's parents were indeed Andrew Gunton Fuller and Esther, not Ester, Hobson. Andrew Gunton Fuller was a son of Andrew Fuller (1754-1815), who is the subject of his own Wikipedia article.Gary Kent (talk) 01:58, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Gary, thank you for that. The article seems to have spawned some interest in her background! Another editor has also gathered together significant detail about her, [User:Noswall59/Notes1|here]. Because Wikipedia requires all content to be backed by secondary sources, what I am very keen to find is anything published (in a newspaper, a historical society magazine, or elsewhere) that clarifies the actual relationship to Robert Dowling, or states that Andrew Gunton Fuller was the son of Andrew Fuller (1754-1815). If you can provide the details of a source for either of these facts, then i can add text and reference to the article. But we can't accept primary sources (such as birth or marriage registrations). Thank you once again for your interest! hamiltonstone (talk) 04:48, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
