- Hi Siobhan. I've read your article draft and I think you've done a good job - it seems to be well researched, well referenced, and well written. I also think the whole idea of doing a wiki project as part of a university course is a great initiative and could be very valuable if we end up with lots of articles like yours being written! I have a couple of suggestions to make...
- Do you mind if I edit it ? It feels wrong to edit someone else's userpage without asking, so I thought I'd ask first...
- ... on this note it can be handy to create a page like this User:SiobhanSmith/Self-handicapping as a place to edit your new creation and or collaborate with others on it.
- I'm happy to collaborate on editing it if you agree, or you I can wait to edit it when you copy it to Self-handicapping.
- I wonder whether there is more of the content from the original that you could incorporate - for example the experiment described in the intro of the current article; the reference to internal and external attributions;
- I haven't been here long but have tried to get into a habit of bending over backwards to try to build upon and/or incorporate other's previous edits rather than deleting content. There are a few reasons why I do this; first, to encourage collaboration; second, because I'm usually not the most knowledgable person on the topics I'm editing; third, because I believe it is much harder to start a revert war. Not everyone on wikipedia agrees with me though! The disadvantage is that it can slow things down (although there is no deadline), it limits the extent to which I can be bold, and it means I often ignore things for quite some time that seem patently wrong. There is even a suggested approach based on just replacing a page with a new version if you think that's best and seeing what happens (see WP:BRD).Finereach (talk) 20:51, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- Yes, our uni project is a clever idea, if you want to take a look at some of the other articles students have worked on you can see it here: Self and Identity Task Force Our tutor is passionate about self and identity and hopes to improve the general area, hopefully we have made a good start!!
- I have taken your advice and made myself a sub page User:SiobhanSmith/Self-handicapping which you can feel free to edit-I will look forward to hearing your ideas! Best leave my userpage unedited as it shouldn't be edited again as its an assignment for uni so will be marked as it was finished today. (Thanks for checking!!)
- I agree with what you have said in regard to not deleting other peoples work totally which is why I didn't go straight ahead and do so-you are perhaps right I could incoporate some of the original article into mine. I will review this and I will also have a look at the reference you mentioned (attribution). I also thought about perhaps contacting the person who wrote the original article to see if they are interested in editing it some more also.

- I have made some changes at User:SiobhanSmith/Self-handicapping. Mostly very minor (spelling etc.). Also copied in two bits from the original that I thought might be handy, although there could have been good reasons to remove. Some questions for you :
- Is Jones and Berglas the "classic" experiment on this? At first glance it seems to be the earliest citation ... this could be mentioned, if they are the ones who discovered, or if that citation is the "classic".
- How does it relate to impression management (copied content over)? Do any of the papers you have discuss this link (it appears one of them might, but you have the paper and I don't so I'll leave it to you to decide if you want to investigate that... you're probably pretty busy if what I remember about 3rd year psychology is correct! I did a three year bachelor degree in psychology ten years ago, although not in psychology at all any more I maintain a bit of an interest through wikipedia mostly. Good luck with the rest of your degree!
- I would reiterate that I think the article is great - just copying it over would be fine. I hope you decide to stay here after your degree is finished. Finereach (talk) 09:39, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

- I read your input and on first glance it looks good. (As you said, 3rd year is busy and I'm in the middle of exams so I am going to revise after and have the intension of sticking about after my degree-it seems a good way to get involved and learn!)
