Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians/2021#User:Yoninah Truly a very sad time for the DYK community, as well as over at Commons. She was in many ways a teacher to me, and we went back and forth on a few issues. But I always knew that her overall purpose was what she believed editorially correct for Wikipedia, and for grammar in general. I had really begun to appreciate her as a solid rock on Wikipedia editing. • I never directly said much about it, but Yoninah was a true guiding light in Wikipedia. She was one of the first editors I did a GA review for, Symphony Six and it was easily one of the best I had seen at that point, with virtually no changes required to meet the GA criteria. I'd always hoped that she would be motivated enough to file an RfA, which I was certain she would pass with flying colours, but unfortunately it was never to be. I'm not sure I should say this, but I think it's right. The last time I interacted with her was in a minor scuffle over a DYK nomination, which completely went against years of incredibly helpful and productive work and enormous contributions, and it was always my intention to work with her again on the next nomination, to show it was a minor blip and not typical of a great working relationship we had .... and now that's not possible. I feel so remorseful and wish I could have done just about anything else. Please accept my condolences :-( ... I'll remember her for things like this. • Try as I might to fit a comment in under 200 characters (ideally under 150 to 160), I can't.
  My heart skipped a bit when I saw the "deceased" notice on her userpage and sunk when, after a few seconds, I found it wasn't a vandalised version. I came to Yoninah's talk page to ask for help and try to make amends for some rudeness towards her in January. In fact I've been a lot ruder to her than was acceptable, particularly as Yoninah was never anything less than professional. I can only hope that this "thanks" meant we didn't end on too bad terms. But this isn't about me.
  I don't think it's an overstatement to say that Yoninah has touched the lives of almost every English-speaking person in the world with access to the internet—not primarily because of the articles she wrote, but the huge positive effect she had in our community. She made an inordinate number of content creations, of course, but her work at DYK has helped editor retention in immeasurable ways. Your first DYK is a great feeling and a great reward for hard work, and initiatives like this are what makes people overcome the steep learning curve to edit constructively, what stops them quitting when things get hard, and what inspires them to edit each day. I apologise if this is too morbid but I saw someone mention bus factor with respect to Wikipedia for the first time today and Yoninah was one of three users I thought of instantly. I don't think I've seen so many messages left to a user in their absence before their death is known. This is a testament to how much Yoninah means to the community. I had to deal with her several times because of my DYKs: she usually found something wrong, either in the suggestion or in the article itself, but most of the time she was right, and her observations contributed a lot to make me work in a more disciplined way. • So this is why we have not seen or heard from her ... because we never will again. I always felt relieved when I saw her name reviewing my DYK submissions. She might have been less willing to go for the more salacious or scandalous hooks than I was, but she was such a consummate professional that I could never possibly have held it against her, and indeed her suggestions often made not just the hooks but sometimes the articles better. I have never felt the loss of another editor as keenly at this ... she was on my shortlist of "people I'd love to meet at Wikimania one day if they ever could attend." Please see Breslov Research Institute, which she wrote. According to the original (redacted) post about her death, she was a long-time editor there. According to her Commons:Yoninah, she was a resident of Jerusalem. She also was a fan of what she called the "Golden Era" of movies, the actors and films in the pre-television era. I think she was a huge fan of Sunset Boulevard (film) and would have liked to have seen a lead hook on it - we heavily discussed it - but it would first have to go through GAC to be eligible here. I have said what I wish to say on her talk page about this sad circumstance. Nonetheless, in the end, advise editorially following the sprit of WP:NOTMEMORIAL here and not do this, and would note it's when policy gets in the way of something one has an emotional attachment to, that often it is still best to conform consensus with it. The purpose of this project, which she clearly was devoted to, was not to focus on her nor internal Wikipedia feelings/pov, rather to highlight recent improvement in content, recent content produced under the requirements WP PAGs - in the end, consistent service to readers, not self (including our own attachments). What are all Wikipedia's halls of fame lists, where most of the honorees are deceased, if not partially memorials? In Sept 2016, we did two days of complete sets devoted to Star Trek. I seem to remember a great set for the deceased Frank Sinatra. And the list goes on. With Yoninah, it's not her life we celebrate, but her individual contributions to this project. • Please see List of Wikipedians by number of DYKs. There are currrent editors who have created and/or promoted as many or more than Yoninah did. Not the least is the current statistical reigning active champ Gerda Arendt. And running neck-and-neck right behind Gerda is our admin Cwmhiraeth. Yoninah's contributions here were much more than statistics. I don't have an objection to creating something unique to recognize Yoninah, and I do like the idea of some kind of service medal. I have the feeling she would dismiss the idea of singling her out, but a service medal based on non-statistical contributions might be a good way to go. The selfless prep builders come immediately to mind. 		I guess no one thought to check your records in a while—it was somewhere around four hundred and thirty, but i count five hundred and seven, if that means anything. goes to show how much you contributed to the project; can't even keep track of it all. i've read through the archives, you know; at dyk's talk page, at your talk page, and everywhere else. you were so much more than just this number i'm leaving here. it's hard to really understand how much you touched every life you interacted with when we've never talked ourselves, but i can see it. i know what you meant to the people who had the joy of working with you. sigh—you fashioned some big shoes to fill, you know that? it seems folly to even try—people are still visiting your memoriam, months later. even though life goes on; we're still remembering you, including those who never even knew you. they say that some stars live out their whole lives before their light reaches earth; they're so far away that by the time the glow has travelled its billions of light years, the star has already gone out. so here's to the beautiful starlight we never get to see in its largest life. שתלך בשמח בגן העולם הבא, אחות יונינה. i hope i can carry your torch well.
