List of Aurealis Award winners and nominees for best fantasy novel[edit]

Nominator(s): Salavat (talk) 16:51, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Very loosely based on two other featured lists about books (List of Lambda Literary Awards winners and nominees for science fiction, fantasy and horror, List of Gaylactic Spectrum Award winners and nominees for best novel) and using the style as seen on BAFTA Award for Best Film, i believe this list covers the subject to the full. I opted for the BAFTA style list because i feel it identifies the seperate years more clearly, however i am open to changing the format to the Gaylactic and Lambda styles if table sorting is an issue. • Citations should be behind punctuations
  • Color need to be accompanied with symbol; see recently promoted featured lists for example

  • I know we allow a number of red links, and I'm not suggesting you fix them all, but I would at the very least prefer not to see two red links in the opening sentence of featured content.
I delinked the two companies. Would it be appropriate to link them in the infobox instead or should it be left delinked altogether? Salavat (talk) 14:15, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My top preference would be for you to generate a couple of nice, referenced stubs for these organisations! The Rambling Man (talk) 14:30, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ill look into making stubs for them, my main concern would be notability especially for Fantastic Queensland. Salavat (talk) 15:47, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Put it this way - if you think they're notable enough to link, then create stubs. If you don't think they'll pass the test, don't link them at all. The Rambling Man (talk) 15:54, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • What is "speculative fiction"?
I linked it in the lead. Is that sufficient? Salavat (talk) 14:15, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. The Rambling Man (talk) 14:30, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "celebrate excellence in speculative fiction" sounds a bit like a quote, is it?
Its not a quote. It was developed from the about us page. I could change it to "excellence in science fiction, fantasy and horror" if thats preferable. Salavat (talk) 14:22, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Typically I have a problem with these kind of "mission statement"-style award descriptions, so I'm just looking for it to not say "celebrate excellence", rather it could say something that either is a quote, or something less weasaly. The Rambling Man (talk) 14:30, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I changed to a quote from the "about us" page. is that better? Salavat (talk) 15:32, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion, much better, thanks. The Rambling Man (talk) 15:54, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is there any way of putting this award into context? Is it prestigious? Any controversy?
Ive added a couple of sentences to the top of the last paragraph citing a couple of sources. Salavat (talk) 15:29, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Any opinions on the new sentences, i would like to make sure they read right to someone other then me? Salavat (talk) 02:32, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, certainly helped my understanding of the significance of the award. Can I assume that these three sentences are all referenced adequately with the mp3 ref? (I can't play it where I am)... The Rambling Man (talk) 14:40, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well the first sentence actually uses a seperate reference to a news article. the last two sentences use the the mp3. I believe i have used the correct reference template for the radio broadcast. the material is is taken from the presenter herself and editor/author who was in the interview. I didnt list him due to the broadcast on the page only mentioned the lady but i can add his name to the reference if its needed. Salavat (talk) 15:26, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Since you have blue and asterisk, I would suggest bold is over the top - you don't need three ways of indicating the winner.
Removed the bolding. Salavat (talk) 14:15, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • "are always help " I guess that's a "held".
Fixed (damn typos). Salavat (talk) 14:15, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Quick comments

Ok i changed the publisher parameter to work. Would i need to list News.com.au as the publisher or is it good as it is? Salavat (talk) 13:37, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I actually didn't notice before that the link came from that site. Yes, it should be mentioned in the citation. Giants2008 (27 and counting) 15:33, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Is there any information on who the judges are; how are they picked, by whom, etc.?
There is information on the Locus site on who they are, however that stops in 2003 and doesnt seem to be listed anywhere else. Added a sentence on the judges, tell me if theres anything need fixing on it
  • "lists all the award nominees and winners" should clarify short-list nominees, not all those submitted

  • In the publishers column, I would add a footnote at the top to clarify what parenthesis mean.
Done. Salavat (talk) 01:06, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I won't oppose for it, but if you get a chance, you might want to make articles for the redlinks. All the books would be notable by criterion 1 on the top of WP:NB, and I'm sure many of the authors are worthy. I might make some if I'm bored.
Im on it. Salavat (talk) 01:07, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't think the link to Portal:Novels is needed; most FA-class novel articles don't have one, and this isn't about a novel.

References
  • References 1 and 2 should have endashes (–) instead of hyphens
Done (i think) Salavat (talk) 01:06, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • The publisher for reference 3 should be Queensland Newspapers because it's just an on-line reprint of something that originally appeared in the paper.
Done. Salavat (talk) 01:06, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Reference 4 should have the last name first. Also, remove the location and make the publisher ABC Radio and Regional Content and make the hyphen an unspaced endash (–). Don't worry, I'm a pedant ;)

  • Rationale is fine for the one image. the ALT text, however, needs attention. You shouldn't say "The logo design" because someone may not know this from just looking at it. Also, most readers won't know what "the Aurealis Award logo" looks like, so you should describe it.
Changed to what i think is better. Salavat (talk) 01:06, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No not for collections and anthologies, and illustrative works or graphic novels. It reads right for me but if im missing a comma to make it more clear please tell. Ive also added some more information, does it read alright? Salavat (talk) 13:20, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I added a sentence in the second paragraph, not sure of the positioning and if it disrupts anything else though.
Fixed. Salavat (talk) 13:20, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
well i found a document stating that they can be awarded in "no award" and "Unable to Reach Agreement" situations however they dont state why they are listed in addition to years which have winners, instead just saying that they are submitted by the judges, so i opted to leave it out because those options arent relavent for these awards, but can be added if needed. Sentences have been added to the bottom of the second paragraph. Salavat (talk) 13:20, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I'm fine with leaving it as it is rather than confusing the situation.

I like the lead, it reads well and the sources are appropriate (ie: the awards website for the technicalities, outside sources for praise). The tables are straightforward and user friendly. Once these issues are addressed, I'll be happy to support. Nev1 (talk) 22:16, 26 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
