This looks like a press photo or film still, If it is own work, some additional confirmation is needed. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 08:57, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's not my own work. As I described while uploading the photo, it's from the axis history forum. If you go to the website you can clearly see the photo as well as plenty of talk and information about the photo. It's uploaded under "fair use".

Coin photographs need two copyright tags: one for the coin (which may have to be unfree) and one for the photograph (which needs to be free). This one has neither. The only copyright tag is for a "non-free logo", but I can't find any non-free logo here.

There is also no fair use rationale for this image; the only fair use rationale I can find is for an image which is used at the top of the article dedicated to the article about "the entity in question". It is unclear which entity the uploader refers to, though. The article is not about any entity.

This article has numerous WP:NFCC problems.

File:Terrific Street Facing East 1913 San Francisco Pacific Street A1.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs)
File:Dancehalls of Pacific Street Facing West San Francisco 1909 SFLibraryCode AAB-6692 CropA.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs)

We don't need both of them. They both provide more or less the same information. See WP:NFCC#3a. Also, it is possible that there are photos which were published before 1923, in which case we can't keep any of them, per WP:NFCC#1. Also, non-free files should not be used in galleries.

File:Spider Kellys Dance Hall with Little Egypt 1911 SFLibraryCode AAB-1265 mono.jpg (delete | talk | history | links | logs)

This looks like just any other dance hall and therefore doesn't provide any important understanding to the article. Fails WP:NFCC#8. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:04, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The photo of the interior of Spider Kelly's dance hall does not have a replacement and is not "like any other dance hall" for the following reasons,
  • 1) That club, Spider Kelly's Dance Hall, is discussed extensively within the Terrific Street article. This is not any dancehall of the world, but one that existed at a specific geography and a specific time period (Pacific Street, San Francisco in the Terrific Street Era (1900 - 1921).
  • 2) The article further states that this latter era of the Barbary Coast became a "tourist mecca for middle-class youth", and also that this new era, unlike the previous era of the Barbary Coast, "now attracted the middle and upper class." The well-dressed middle class couples of that photo reinforce those sourced facts within the article and help the reader better visualize that lost era of the past.
Concerning the other 2 photos, they are not the same and they serve different purposes within two different articles.
Additionally, none of the historic photos are currently "used in any galleries." James Carroll (talk) 19:28, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There is no critical discussion about what the dance hall looks like, and in such situations, a photograph of the dance hall would normally only satisfy WP:NFCC#8 in an article about the dance hall. I can't find any article about the dance hall anywhere on Wikipedia, so the photograph doesn't belong on Wikipedia. The fact that the photograph shows middle class citizens is easily replaced by text, see WP:NFCC#1: "Middle class citizens attended the dance hall." This is also more helpful to readers as readers might not know how middle class citizens were dressed in San Francisco during this period.
It seems that one image has been moved from this article to Barbary Coast, San Francisco#After the 1906 Earthquake. However, the image doesn't belong there either, per WP:NFC#UUI §6. We already have an article about the street, so what you should do in the Barbary Coast, San Francisco article is to link to the article about a street, where people can find pictures about the street. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:56, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You rational is still incorrect for the following reasons. Yes, there is discussion about what the interior Spider Kelly's dance hall looks like within the article, and Spider Kelly's dance hall even has its own subsection. Within that subsection the article describes the change in patrons after the earthquake of 1906, and how it was not only lower classes who frequented the dance halls of Pacific Street, but that post-earthquake it had become a "tourist mecca for middle-class youth". Within the photo we can see easily that that the patrons are not of a lower class, but are in fact adolescents who are well-dressed and likely to be from middle and upper classes.
Concerning the photo of Dancehalls of Pacific Street, it belongs in the Barbary Coast article because it directly references the subsection it appears with, called After the 1906 Earthquake. That subsection delves into the unique era of the Barbary Coast which occurred from 1907 to 1921. Those buildings in the photo were not built until after the earthquake of 1906, and that subsection (After the 1906 Earthquake), discusses how a major cultural and political change occurred with the reconstruction efforts to rebuild the district following the earthquake.
Stefan2, if you cannot find it in yourself to remove these valuable photos from this deletion list, then you should place this issue on the Deletion Review Page [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:DRV#Instructions ] so that others can contribute to this discussion, and enable a more robust discussion and consensus. Obviously the issues of these photos is not free from controversy, and they do not belong on a list for speedy deletion. James Carroll (talk) 21:56, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Where in the article can I find critical discussion about the the parts of the dance hall that I see on the photograph? I can only see people and a little bit of floor. An explanation of how wealthy the visitors were can and should be replaced by text, see WP:NFCC#1.
In which way is WP:DRV#Instructions relevant here? Deletion reviews are for appealing closed deletion discussions, but this one hasn't been closed yet. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:01, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is the change in the culture of patrons after the earthquake that is the central issue to the Spider Kelly's photo. Patrons, patrons, patrons! Before the earthquake that area on Pacific Street was very lawless, had frequent murders and robberies, and as a result most San Franciscans were afraid of the district, except for lower classes and criminals. Read the Barbary Coast article. But after the earthquake, the city made an attempt to change the district by providing more law enforcement and making it safe for a much greater range of people.
Here are 6 direct quotes from the article which describe an abrupt reversal of culture which patronized the clubs of Pacific Street, as a result of new efforts of the city after the earthquake of 1906.
  • 1) "This new reincarnation of Pacific Street was gentrified and tame compared to the lawless pre-earthquake version of the Barbary Coast, and Terrific Street became a tourist mecca for middle-class youth."
  • 2) "the city's financial boosters then saw an opportunity to clean up Barbary Coast, and transform it into an entertainment area which would be acceptable for every-day San Franciscans."
  • 3) "now that the city and its merchants were going to pressure the police and club owners into quelling the violence of the old Barbary Coast."
  • 4) "But now that merchants and politicians committed to reversing that previous predatory behavior and would attempt to protect customers from theft and harassment, they could expect much wider appeal by also attracting middle and upper class customers."
  • 5) "The new tone of the neighborhood would now attract a type of tourist called a slummer — middle and upper class individuals who go to the..."
  • 6) "Despite the club's [ Spider Kelly's] rumored reputation, archived photos show well dressed adolescent couples enjoying a harmless night of dancing"
You need to fully read the Barbary Coast article and the Terrific Street articles to realize that the earthquake created an abrupt change in culture of patrons. A picture is worth a thousand words. If Wikipedia is to be competitive with other websites it must keep up with the times and also include photographs. James Carroll (talk) 00:30, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
NFCC#1 does not apply. Yes, there's a chance there might be free images (there's even a chance one of these may be free based on the fact there's a known caption suggesting it was published, and that the date of publishing may help make it free) and we should continue to look for them, but NFCC#1 says either we know they exist (we don't) or that one could be created, which we can't for obvious reasons. So there's no NFCC#1 issue here. --MASEM (t) 19:51, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NFCC#1 is very much a problem here. The article tells that "Terrific Street was a short-lived entertainment district on San Francisco's Barbary Coast during the early 20th-century". Is there really any reason to believe that there wouldn't be advertisements or articles about the entertainment district published at that time containing photos? --Stefan2 (talk) 20:56, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
San Francisco Public Library has give Written permission for these photos to be used by Wikipedia(see permission form at right). That library makes an attempt to identify possible copyright holders, and labels the photo's Full Record Page with the language "Restrictions May Apply" if they are found ( see example: http://sflib1.sfpl.org:82/record=b1008421~S0 ). However on the Full Record pages for the Spider Kelly's photo and the Dancehalls of Pacific Street photos we see NO language to the effect of "Restrictions May Apply", which means that the SF Library has not found a copyright owners during their years of displaying the photos. ( Full record pages of 2 photos: http://sflib1.sfpl.org:82/record=b1006314~S0 and http://sflib1.sfpl.org:82/record=b1011628~S0 ).James Carroll (talk) 15:40, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For how we interpret NFCC#1 and the replacement with free images, we cannot make the assumption that just due to age there would be PD photos of the same basic scene. If it was something that continued to exist today, yes, we can presume free images exist or could be made, but something that has happened this far in the past, the only way NFCC#1 can be claimed as a problem is if there are actual existing free images in our hands that we can replace out with. I would agree the chance that such exist in this case is very high, but until they are found, these are fine by NFCC#1 standards. --MASEM (t) 06:06, 2 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And reviewing them for other NFCC aspects, I feel both listed in the initial nom are fair to keep per NFCC#8; they are historical photos of the street as discussed in the article; both serve enough different purpose to illustrate the article to need to rush to delete them. The one inside one of the halls might be unnecessary though; it is just people dancing in era-specific outfits and that's not really as critical to the article. --MASEM (t) 00:57, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep: There is permission to reproduce and this is only User:Stefan2 upriver somewhere anyway. Coat of Many Colours (talk) 12:05, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please provide evidence that the person who issued the permission is the copyright holder. Permission from someone who is not the copyright holder is worthless, and there is no evidence that the library ever acquired the copyright to the photographs. Furthermore, the permission is only for Wikipedia; see ((db-f3)). --Stefan2 (talk) 21:45, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep all three. Regarding the photo inside the dance hall, we do not know the copyright holder – if the photo was taken on commission for the hall proprietor (for example), according to case law at the time copyright would be with the proprietor unless there was a contrary agreement. Only later did the law change to favour the photographer (but IANAL). Not knowing the copyright holder (it may have been uncertain even at the time) we do not know whether any publication was authorized by the copyright holder. So, we cannot be sure it is still in copyright (it could have been published lawfully in a contemporary newspaper). Also, it seems likely we will not be able to assert it is definitely public domain. We know of no copyright restrictions but, because of WP’s policy of requiring a polarised decision, we should classify it as “non-free” (which is very probably not the case in law). Does the photo meet the WP non-free policy? We do not have a free replacement and any putative replacement is likely to have similar uncertainties. Subjectively, I do not agree that the photo can be replaced by saying "middle class citizens attended the dance hall" and I am very surprised at the claim that "This looks like just any other dance hall". I have been to dance halls with middle class citizens (well, teenagers and students!) and none of them looked anything like this. The floor is de minimis. The dancers and dancing shown by the photo are discussed and are highly relevant to the article. Our understanding of the culture of Terrific Street is enhanced and to remove the image would reduce our understanding. I agree with Masem’s assessment of the other two nominated photos. All the NFCC criteria seem to me to have been met. Thincat (talk) 21:05, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What does the image tell you about the dance hall? All you see is a picture of visitors, but you do not need a photograph of visitors to tell that the dance hall had visitors. --Stefan2 (talk) 21:45, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I really do not understand the difficulty you seem to be having. I'm sorry about that. The article is about an entertainment district. The section illustrated is about a saloon in that district and the section's use of the photo is not trying to prove that the saloon had visitors (is it?). It is discussing the saloon in a cultural context and the photo shows a bit about how people dressed and how they behaved and that is highly relevant to what the district was like. Without the photo I wouldn't know that. I find it quite odd what you seem to be gleaning from the photo. Thincat (talk) 22:28, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The article is not about a saloon. There is no reason to assume that there are no free images of dressed people from that era, so if the only purpose is to show what dressed people look like, then the image blatantly fails WP:NFCC#1. --Stefan2 (talk) 01:05, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep all three. I came to the Terrific Street article to tidy up the reference formatting and noticed this discussion. The images being used in Terrific Street are vital to the article both textually and graphically. There is not an overabundance of images (not every section has an image), and these historical photos are not otherwise available in pd, so their use meets NFCC#1. The street images of dance halls are not the same at all, so their use in Terrific Street and Barbary Coast, San Francisco does not violate NFCC#3a. The use of the Spider Kelly dance hall interior is in fact a proper interpretation of NFCC#8, not a violation of it – since you, Stefan, are unable to understand the change in the clientele from the article text, the image is showing you the new, middle-to-upper-class clientele. I am surprised that you are so vociferously challenging the use of images in two obviously historical articles that have no pd images available, and for which the uploader has received documented permission to use from the San Francisco Public Library archives. Yoninah (talk) 22:11, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NFCC#1 is not about whether these particular images are in the public domain, but whether there exist images which are in the public domain. Presumably, pictures of this street were published in local newspapers when the businesses were operating on this street, and those pictures would then be ((PD-1923)). The article should use those pictures instead of the ones in the article.
I am not sure why you are claiming that I am unable to understand the change in clientèle. A properly written text would easily explain a change of clientèle. On the other hand, an image can't show a change of clientèle, since it only shows the clientèle at one point but not at several points as required to see a change. Images can also not show a change in clientèle without extensive explanations of how different people were dressed at that time, something which can be avoided altogether by instead describing the change of clientèle in the text. If you are unable to understand the change in clientèle using the current text, then the solution is not to insert non-free images, but to improve the text. --Stefan2 (talk) 01:10, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keep the three photos. These historic photos are very relevant and supportive to the articles mentioned, and their age (before 1923) plus written permission from the San Francisco Public Library demonstrates that there is not a copyright violation or liability.James Carroll (talk) 20:58, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fails WP:NFCC#8. The NFUR states that "[t]he image illustrates an important location related to the plot of Dark Souls showing the main location of which the player's journey takes place within the game." However, neither the image itself nor the appearance of the location appears to be discussed in the article. Thus, the image is being used decoratively, in violation of NFCC #8. RJaguar3 | u | t 22:57, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The kingdom of Lordran is mentioned in the main article. " Lordran, the land of the ancient lords". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.28.10.184 (talk) 19:54, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I was referring to mentioning the image itself or the appearance of the location. That the name of a location is mentioned in the article is insufficient justification for a non-free image under WP:NFCC#8. RJaguar3 | u | t 14:27, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
