Portal:Indian religions (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Delete Broad enough topic for a portal, but we already have portals for three of the four exemplars that the Indian religions article lists, namely Portal:Hinduism, Portal:Jainism and Portal:Buddhism; since the only missing one is Portal:Sikhism - deleted at Mfd - this portal is almost wholly redundant to other portals, contrary to the WP:POG guideline. Editors should be encouraged to focus on the 3 specific religion portals, or Portal:Religion, all of which have dedicated WikiProjects.UnitedStatesian (talk) 20:57, 27 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

• Delete per the nom. This portal has been abandoned for nearly five years, save one very small biography update in 2015. Since 2006, the lead of WP:POG has said "Do not expect other editors to maintain a portal you create" ... and this one has not been maintained by Joshua Jonathan, who last updated it in October 2014. It also has only 10 articles, which is half the POG minimum of 20, and many of these contain references, which portals shouldn't have. There is also a picture chart on the main page's intro of the world's religious demographics in 2005.

It clearly fails WP:POG's requirement that portals should be about subjects broad enough to attract large numbers of readers and maintainers. This decrepit portal has had nearly five years of no maintainers and it had a very low 14 views per day from January 1 to June 30 2019. Portals stand or fall on their merits in the now, not what could someday hypothetically happen with them, and this one falls flat. I oppose re-creation, as nearly five years of hard evidence shows Indian religions are not a broad enough topic to attract readers or maintainers. Please note that I support no prejudice against nominating any of the other religion portals for deletion, regardless of how this MfD turns out. • Delete as per nominator. I mostly agree with User:Joshua Jonathan that most portals are useless. They may have purposes that their advocates have not explained, or they may have a mystical value. Mysticism should be left to religion, whether Indian religion, Abrahamic religion, or other, not in Wikipedia, except for efforts to provide an encyclopedic description of what cannot be described. I agree with User:Newshunter12 that this MFD should have no effect on any nomination of any other religion portal for deletion. There is no short-term reason to expect that a re-creation of this portal will address the problems. Any proposed re-creation of this portal using a more modern design, and taking into account the failures of many portals, can go to Deletion Review. • Note to closing admin. I don't want in any way to prejudge the outcome ... but if you close this discussion as delete, please can you not remove the backlinks?
