(eubot) As well as being rather WP:XY, it seems like this is not used in sources to describe alpha particles (or α particles), probably because they are called "alpha particles". Weak delete as WP:RFD#D8. We don't have B particle or G ray, and conversely we don't have Chi ray because it's not a transliteration of Greek letter Chi (but we do have Ray Chi). Si Trew (talk) 14:36, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Eubot slapped ((R from title without diacritics)) on everything of this kind, including changes of alphabet, and redirects to titles that do not have diacritics (because they were created from a redirect that does). Si Trew (talk) 16:43, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The first letter of titles is always capitalised but links are case insensitive, so this is the same as a particle, and α particle and Α particle (Greek "Α" not Latin "A") are the same redirect, so the case is not relevant here. Thryduulf (talk) 20:03, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm expecting to see A-amino acid next. The nonsensical redirects A helix and A male already exist (I dreamt those last two up as jokes - but found that they already exist; so, not funny at all - or useful). :-( Narky Blert (talk) 20:59, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I've just nominated A helix and A male, and the equally-useless A helixes - all from 2008??? That's another half-hour of my life I won't get back, doing that. Narky Blert (talk) 21:32, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
They're from 2008 because that's when the Eubot did the run. Incidentally, I've not actually tracked down that it was ever given approval – or it was ever even discussed – for it to do the particular run for these "diacritical marks" redirects. The last approval I could find was for User:Eubot was Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/Eubot_5 of June 2008. I am slightly more imagnitive than to think any subsequent approval would be Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/Eubot_6 but I've not found a bot approval (or even discussion) by searching it in anything I could think of. (Eubot) WP:RFD#D5 nonsense. This is still in Hungarian name order, using Hungarian words, so it makes no sense at all to Germanize the Hungarian spelling. Si Trew (talk) 14:04, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(eubot) 'Delete. I get a hit for Laboratorio N here, but that's a different group/event I think, taking place in 2011. Thus this is either WP:REDLINK or, I would say, WP:RFD#D8 because when the letter/diacritic "Ñ" stands alone like this, it's a bit nonsense to substitute it with "N" since it's the distinguishing mark of this laboratorio. (eubot) WP:RFD#D8, Delete both, there's no need to vaeisaelate over these ones when there are perfectly good R's at Vaisala crater and Vaisala (crater). Not Germanic but Finnish. Similar redirects exist to the other entries at Vaeisaelae (disambiguation). Oh, they don't: that DAB's at Väisälä. (Eubot) WP:RFD#D5 nonsense. This is the name of a song, and actually Kräm is all that is needed to find that out, although I suppose Kram (sa nara far ingen ga) is OK. It's nonsense to have a redirect where neither the name of the song nor the name of the "disambiguator" for the song (it's not WP disambiguating here but the full title of the song) is correct. Is anyone ever going to search this way? Hits of 3 in 90 days – all in the last six weeks since we started discussing Eubot redirects – suggest not. Results of a source search suggest not; there are a couple of uses on Russian music sites and one on Danish, but this is the English Wikipedia so transliterations need to make sense to an English audience, and I suggest this is just too far out. Anyone who's going to knock the tops off the "å"s is not going to bother to insert a couple of "e"s. Si Trew (talk) 12:44, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tony Pena (disambiguation)

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more redirects. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the redirect's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was keep. (non-admin closure) — Godsy (TALKCONT) 18:38, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(eubot) Not sure. Nobody at the target DAB uses the name "Tony Pena" but "Tony Peña"; if there's only one person who does/did use that name (Villano IV), as the DAB states, then there's no need for the disambiguation and Tony Pena can go there instead of to Tony Peña, where it currently goes. However, there's no mention of that name in Villano IV, so that would be a bit of a surprise. It's probably the best of a bad job to keep it, but this is a bit misleading to imply that we need to disambiguate "Tony Pena" when we don't. Si Trew (talk) 12:40, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not suggesting they don't. But since according to WP there's only one Tony Pena, namely Villano IV, but several Tony Peñas (to one of which Tony Pena redirects), all we are doing is making it harder for people to find the one person called Tony Pena. That is to say, the diacritics would be important here: but in fact that we don't actually have anything beyond the DAB that says that Villano IV actually was called Tony Pena (or conversely that he was called Tony Peña): nothing in the article says either. The Gsearch results I have are about half-and-half split on whether the wrestler was Tony Pena or Tony Peña, so I'm guessing (since he's Mexican Spanish) it was actually the latter. (Eubot) Not Germanic but Mongolian, Delete as WP:RFD#D8. And, why create this but not Zamyn-Ueued? (I know the answer: Eubot didn't transliterate capital letters, but, why not? Don't mind that it didn't, but it rather shows up the lack of thought that went into it. Is it because in German, umlauted letters never occur at the start of Nouns, which tend to have Capital Letters anyway?) Si Trew (talk) 12:35, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A Gseach for "Poeide" gives me only geographical catalogues and things based on them (weather sites etc), not anything that has actually been created by a human. The only source I can find that is even vaguely reasonable is 1worldmap.com/Mongolia/Tov-Aymag/Suember/6618838 but even then I'm inclined to think without any justification that either it's taken its geo information from WP or applied the same crude algorithm as Eubot, I can't find any uses in actual human-written text. (Eubot) Weak delete. Since disambiguators are there primarily as "hints" to which title something might go to, and not as likely search terms in themselves, it makes little sense to have multiple variations on them. While Greatest Hits (Bjork album) probably makes sense, this one probably doesn't. Neither is an ((R from title without diacritics)) in any meaningful sense since it's only the disambiguator that has the diacritic, not the title ("Greatest Hits"). (I think we've had a discussion before, many years ago, about whether the disambiguator is part of the title proper, and I didn't think then, and don't think now, that it is.) (eubot) Not sure. It's the name of an album by Frank Zappa but I'm pretty sure it's not intended as a metal umlaut cos there's a cow on the sleeve art and the WP:FIRSTSENTENCE translates it as "Leather", rather unsurprisingly. So, also unsurprisingly, this is a remarkably likely typo for Leather by transposing the "a" and "e". It might be a bit WP:XY which one to go to, even without that likelihood, since really it's just the German word for the cognate Leather in the first place: in that way, we'd usually say this was WP:FORRED since "Leather" is not particularly German. Don't really know what's best to do with this; perhaps keep, perhaps a hatnote, perhaps just delete it. Si Trew (talk) 07:27, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The "straight" redirects Tubatulabal language and Tubatulabal people are fine (Tuebatulabal to the DAB at Tübatulabal also). (Eubot) Not sure, perhaps WP:RFD#D8. I've been skipping most of the Finnish ones I come across, as we haven't a great deal of consensus on them generally: Finnish is Finno-Ugric, not one of the Germanic languages, but there is a Swedish population of Finland so things might arrive via Swedish into English. But when it comes to agglutinations of vowels that looks strange or foreign in English, such as here where final "ae" is more commonly seen as a Latin plural than a transliteration of "ä", I am even less sure.

I don't know Germanic languages at all, but my feeling is that an umlauted final letter of a word is unusual. Yet I can't find anything telling me so (or otherwise), though. Maybe User:Thryduulf would know. Si Trew (talk) 05:11, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I can't help you with this one - my knowledge of how Swedish is used in Finland is 100% drawn from Wikipedia. Thryduulf (talk) 11:39, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was keep for now, without prejudice against renominating in several months' time. (non-admin closure) Uanfala (talk) 13:31, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Delete as useless detritus. This is a redir-from-move, left over from an incorrectly disambiguated article. "Stepping" is an alternative name of skitting; skitting is not a type of stepping. If skitting had to be disambiguated it would be as "skitting (dance)". The redir is also miscapitalized. It's really not plausible that anyone will be looking for the string "Skitting (Stepping)".  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  05:01, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, if it's a recent move that makes sense, but I'm suspicious of the general argument "we have to keep this because someone outside might have a link to it, quoted or copied it, used it in a printed source, etc" as we'd end up not being able to change anything, which also defeats the purpose of making the encyclopaedia a Wiki-based open project. Keep for now. Si Trew (talk) 12:19, 25 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing in this that stops things changing, what it does is ensure that there is a way for people who don't know that the change has happened to still find what they are looking for. Not all redirects from moves need keeping, but the longer a title was in use, the recency of the move, the plausibility of the titles, difference between new and old names, how new and old titles are used outside Wikipedia and the nature of the subject can all affect whether it should be or not. In almost all cases (excluding vandalism, mistakes, temporary moves and similar) where an article has been stable at one title for several years we should keep the resulting redirect for sufficient time for the move to propagate to search engines, mirrors, periodic visitors, etc. The minimum time for this is going to be on the order of months rather than minutes. (Eubot) Delete, WP:RFD#D8. The handle of this Händel is that of George Frideric Handel (aka Georg Friedrich Händel), whose name transliterated into English is almost universally Handel. We do have Haendel, not Eubot and not rcatted, as a redirect, but I don't think that necessarily is transitive to derivative works. I get a few YouTube hits with this spelling for his individual works, but it's fairly clear that the majority even of those are not English.
