In the nickname section or in the main article. I like the idea. Even Charles' "Do Bronx" has a meaning that can be explained in the main article with a source. Marty2Hotty (talk) 22:37, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It originally was next to the nickname in the infobox ie Dues de Guerra (God of War). I'm all for a source if there is one, but in the case of someone like Thiago Santos where his nickname Marreta is easily translated as Sledgehammer, do we really need one? Nswix (talk) 00:59, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Creatorial: looping in Creatorial here since they ask me the same question on my talk page. I have yet to come across a guidelines in translation of nickname (may be one but I have yet to know). However, as most of you know that I am always go by Wikipedia guidelines whenever it is possible since we are all Wikipedia's here and I am also a one of NPPS and CVUA trainers to do what I teach/as a mentor. English Wikipedia core policy is verifiability by independent, reliable source (sparingly primary sources can be used with strict guidelines for content)
(1) Nicknames in the infobox - Keep the name names as per Sherdog (it is also sourced at the bottom of the infobox). If a translation of the nickname can be sourced and have a meaning of why the nickname is given Pls see
Jiří Procházka's nicknames (note he change his nick name "Denisa" to "BJP" (sourced, translations and meanings) then we can put the info on the "Personal life section"
(2) Fighters name of their own languages (pls note User:Creatorial) - (where they are born; not for those who born in US, UK or other courtiers whose heritage/parent are from somewhere else such as Belal Muhammad, Nasrat Haqparast and etc. where they were born in US and Germany respectively) should be sourced. Pls note there are many Wikipedia languages and each languages have their own guidelines and they work independently from each other and how they reinforce the guidelines. Since this is English Wikipedia, many of the readers/viewers do not know other languages and do not know if the translation or local names is as per stated (I would not know if Tatsuro Taira Japanese name is "平良達郎" for example, so if an independent, reliable source can support the claim then I think can be placed in the article. To say all that we are not going to translate other stuff in the article since this is ENGLISH Wikipedia. Last note, any languauges sources CAN be used in English Wikipedia provided they are independent and reliable. Thank you everyone for your time, efforts to improve Wikipedia especially in MMA related article and thank you for all your civility, politeness, and helping each other in this planform in the spirit of Wikipedia. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeiatalk02:17, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I strongly agree with Cassiopeia. The nicknames in general are meant to be said the way they are per the sherdog page. Believe it or not any information put on any article in this site should be sourced and backed up with evidence, The translations had no sources of any kind. You can can add the translations in the body of the article with a source telling readers how the fighter got the nickname or why they got it but I don’t agree with having the translations in the infobox itself. Many thanks Nswix. Articlread (talk) 02:50, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
