Request to add to title blacklist

After the result of this RfD discussion, I have this request to make: could the creation of any title that contains any instance of at least two consecutive apostrophes ('') be added to the title blacklist? The fact that any title with those specifications has the potential to cause wiki markup issues when linked in an article seems to outweigh the usefulness of their existence. Steel1943 (talk) 22:27, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

It's doable, and it sounds like a good idea to me. If nobody replies here objecting in a few days, I'll do it. Jackmcbarn (talk) 23:27, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

By the way, here's a list of all remaining titles with this problem:

Jackmcbarn (talk) 05:00, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Also, I noticed that there are a lot of chemicals that really do have multiple consecutive apostrophes in their name, so I tweaked the regex to allow them through while still blocking the rest. Jackmcbarn (talk) 05:46, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Addition to the above request

@Jackmcbarn: I just realized part of my request above that I completely overlooked; should the creation of new usernames with at least two consecutive apostrophes be blacklisted as well? I mean, I can only imagine how annoying it would be for a new user to create their name with at least two consecutive apostrophes ... just to not be able to create their own user page, as well as having their talk page essentially blocked since it could not be created by most editors, including themselves. Steel1943 (talk) 01:20, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

Also pinging Technical 13 on this for feedback purposes. Steel1943 (talk) 01:22, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
  • My thoughts: links to any page that have consecutive apostrophes are a bad idea due to the original reason why I requested that the titles be blacklisted. User names are no exception to this thought, given that if I want to ping or mention an editor with consecutive apostrophes in their username, I am now adding to the problem, and not by choice. (Well, I could choose not to ping them, but then I would have no way to use the echo system to communicate with them, so it's a lose-lose situation.) Steel1943 (talk) 22:15, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
  • Ah, I thought that this was how this page worked, but I wasn't sure. Perfect! Steel1943 (talk) 18:04, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

TM, R, and SM symbols in usernames

Does anyone have any objections to me adding the following entry?

.*[™®℠].* <newaccountonly|errmsg=titleblacklist-forbidden-new-account>

Jackmcbarn (talk) 20:06, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

  • Of course. I don't object to the idea, I just think that all of the creation rules should be as clear as can be so that people know exactly why the requested name doesn't work... As an account creator, I've had instances when I've ended up wasting way too much time trying to figure out what rule was hit so I can appropriately respond to the requester. Thanks. — ((U|Technical 13)) (etc) 22:13, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
@Technical 13: I've now implemented this, with MediaWIki:Titleblacklist-forbidden-new-account-trademark as the reason. Jackmcbarn (talk) 18:51, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
    Jack, looks fine to me. :) — ((U|Technical 13)) (etc) 20:06, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Wilayats of ISIL

Would it possible to add all the titles listed at WP:RFPP rather than trying to protect each one. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 07:29, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

.*Wilayat.*(ISIL|Islamic State).* <casesensitive |errmsg=titleblacklist-custom-isil> #See [[Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#What_should_be_done_for_pro-ISIL_Wilayat_type_articles.3F|What should be done for pro-ISIL Wilayat type articles?]] to the titleblacklist and MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-wilayat-isil will need to be created with an appropriate text still needing to be determined. — ((U|Technical 13)) (etc) 20:01, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

repinging CambridgeBayWeather((U|Technical 13)) (etc) 02:41, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
Is the question Jackmcbarn's post above? Perhaps User:Mhhossein, User:Spirit_of_Eagle, User:Gregkaye or User:Legacypac would be better able to answer than me. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 10:25, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
  • Yes, what text is requested for MediaWiki:Titleblacklist-custom-wilayat-isil? I'd be happy to put it there and ping Jack to add the TBL. — ((U|Technical 13)) (etc) 14:12, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
I'm not sure I was just passing the message on from the request for protection page. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 16:44, 26 January 2015 (UTC)
It might be better to simply create the pages as redirects and protect them. All the best: Rich Farmbrough13:12, 23 February 2015 (UTC).

About talk page creation

I was reviewing a discussion at MediaWiki talk:Titleblacklist/Archive 3#Talk page creation, and I was just wondering: is it technically possible to have the blacklist restrictions excluded from either talk pages with an existing corresponding pages or talk pages period? (I'm not proposing anything right now; I'm just wondering if it is even possible to do.) Steel1943 (talk) 22:50, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Paul Easter-title black list needed!

Yeah its getting crazy! (Now watch some actual celebrity with this name need a page!) but yes-it needs to be on here! Wgolf (talk) 22:42, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Do you have some links to where these have been created or any additional information? I'm not sure of how widespread this is. Nakon 22:52, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
I've found some examples and have now added the entry " .*Paul Easter.* <newaccountonly>" to the blacklist. Nakon 23:23, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Would recommend using something like the existing .*Dav.*\bCote.*(film|movie|director|actor).* (created for a similar socking case) with no newaccount restriction, to catch all plausible formations of an article about him - the sillier stuff at his sockpuppet archive ("Luap Restsae") would be obvious enough not to last long or be taken seriously by readers. --McGeddon (talk) 23:42, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
I added .*paul easter.* but not the actor/director matches because the article has been re-created under titles such as "Suffolk director" and "P A U L..." etc. You get the idea. This will cut down some, but the title blacklist is not a silver bullet unfortunately. @Nakon: Nah, that was me not paying attention :) I'm not sure how we'd encode this in an edit filter, but if you want to give it a go, definitely. Even if it cuts down on the number of re-created titles. Keep in mind though, this guy is just angry at Wikipedia. At this point he's not trying to create an article about himself, he's just being disruptive. So the title is the least of his worries. §FreeRangeFrogcroak 01:41, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Role accounts

I'd like to see the following added as I have seen a fair few accounts like this, and it saves the user trouble if they are notified up-front:

It would be possible to add other likely signs, for example

.*\s(inc|gmbh|ltd|plc)\.?

of course, should someone so desire.

@Rich Farmbrough: I'd oppose such a change on the grounds that it would likely produce an unacceptable number of false positives. Jackmcbarn (talk) 20:20, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Hmm well there are 6,081 accounts ending with "group", 2,616 have ever edited, and of those 1,414 are not blocked. The second hundred are listed at User:Rich_Farmbrough/temp53 of these "User:Bloodgroup" seems acceptable (but actually isn't), and "Basedgroup" understandable (they used the words from the captcha as their account name) but not permitted. A total of 16,910 edits were made by these accounts (so far). The only other acceptable names I can think of are variants of "Agegroup"adn mathematical stuff like "cyclic group" or "infinite group".
I would say that "media" is similar. "massmedia", "magneticmedia" or "mixedmedia" might be acceptable, but the vast majority are not and will result in the editor being told to change their account name. The media accounts have committed 34,761 edits.

Setting a maximum length for new usernames

Back in 2014, the 40-character username limit was removed here per Matma Rex's request. This was under the understanding that the software would enforce a limit of 64 characters regardless. However, due to SUL auto-renaming, the 64 character limit had to be increased to 85. Thus it is now possible for people to register new usernames like:
User:A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet morning
Such long usernames are completely unnecessary, although vandals like User:99 Willys on Wheels on the wall, 99 Willys on Wheels... seem to enjoy them. This is not strictly an aesthetic issue, but also a practical one, as excessively long usernames make it more difficult for reusers to properly credit the authors of articles. Perhaps 40 characters was too restrictive, but I think 85 characters is excessive. I would like to propose re-adding the maximum length limit, but setting it to 50 characters instead of 40. Here is an example of a hypothetical 50 character username:
User:My username is 50 characters and I am fine with it

Local title blacklists no longer have the ability to block new account creation, only the global meta titleblacklist can. Legoktm (talk) 04:14, 20 February 2016 (UTC)

All the details of his activity are located here (meta): it's a request for a goblal lock. Anyway, also the jeuxstar's website should be blacklisted (I dunno if this is the right page). Letter prime?

When trying to move Sää´mođđâz to Sääʹmođđâz, the following error is shown: "Sää´mođđâz" cannot be moved to "Sääʹmođđâz", because the title "Sääʹmođđâz" is on the title blacklist. If you feel that this move is valid, please consider requesting the move first.

Why is this title blacklisted?

See the use of the modifier letter prime ʹ instead of symbol acute accent ´ in the introduction line of the article. The substitution of the prime by acute accent comes from a problem with keyboard input since the acute accent is commonly on keyboard layouts while letter prime isn’t, but typographically the letter prime is correct in Skolt Sami. --Moyogo/ (talk) 09:05, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

Filthy Frank

I was wondering if we could blacklist any title that has the name "Filthy Frank" in it or maybe any article that uses that specific phrase? The reason for this is that there has been a fairly continuous campaign to get Filthy Frank a Wikipedia article outside of Harlem Shake (meme). He originated the meme, but it went far beyond him and he's gone through multiple AfDs that all ended with the consensus to delete the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Filthy Frank and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/George Miller (entertainer). We probably can't blacklist George Miller since the name is relatively common, but we can at least prevent someone from trying to get around the article saltings to create a new article.

I'd especially appreciate if we could keep someone from putting the name in another article because there has been a lot of vandalism at Chef (film), from people trying to add two of his videos to the article despite clear indication that they are not notable enough to be added. I've semi-protected the page, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone is working at getting autoconfirmed so they can re-add them, given that attempts to add him to Wikipedia in general have apparently been going on since 2014. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 08:31, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
