• @Navarre0107:--I think it's been stated before that comics are not necessarily considered mainstream canon by those who write them (more specifically, the comics follow the show, but the show doesn't have to follow the comics), so I take it that the comics should be treated as irreverent to the article and it's details until proven to be show-canon, and would personally prefer the article to be show only as that is fully canon. That being said, the exact policy here is still a bit vauge.-- JadeEditor (talk)

Where is the planet referred to as Equis? All soruces I'm aware of refer to the planet as Earth, such as Nightmare Rarity where Luna says she has to get back to Earth. The statement has no citation, so does anyone know? --SupermanFan97 (talk) 16:06, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a lot of references to the My Little Pony comics within this article. However, the comics have been said to be dubiously canon at best, so should we really include indications from there? --JadeEditor (talk)

@JadeEditor:, I’ve asked this question previously on this talk page, without too many responses, I think we should look furtherly into limiting such references, seeing as though they are often seen, both by the fans and creators, to be of varying canonicity at best - Navarre0107 (talk) 03:03, 13 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

But I do agree with you on the canoncity I will probably start removing comic references from the article or at least state that some parts of it come from the comics that are dubious at best. The introduction reads: "Instead of English, it is mentioned that they call their language "Ponish"; however, due to the fact that written English is seen at several times during the series, it is generally understood that this is English under a different name" Is this actually supported? I always assumed that the written words were "translated" for the audience, rather than the ponies literally speaking English under a different name. I get the sense this is an error, since I'm pretty sure the Crystal Empire in the context of my little pony is not "the second full-length album by the German power metal band Freedom Call". Here's hoping I've submitted this correctly! (Probably haven't, I don't much use this talk page affair.) I've not bothered to check all the references, but the link under "Crystal Guard" or whatnot seems to do it.

The Equestria article is currently way too long (46,000+ characters) meanwhile the Middle-earth article is only 18,000+ characters. I think if we're trimming down the Equestria article, we should compare it to similar articles about universes which have a lot of lore and worldbuilding (like LoTR). Notably the "Geography" and "History" sections of Middle-earth are way shorter, and there isn't a "Culture" section. The "Government" section can also be folded into the "Geography" and "Inhabitants" sections. Unless someone else has a better idea, I'll start cutting back those sections considerably. Much of the "History" section is already discussed as the plot of MLP:FiM and the movies so it isn't really needed here. If necessary we can always include links to other articles and sections. A problem with this article is that it is way too in-universe. I've written out-of-universe stuff in in my sandbox on this article, so feel free to incorporate any of that (just provide attribution). At the time I'm writing this, the article's "readable prose size" is 6820 words (by my count, our second-longest MLP article after My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic fandom and even longer than the main MLP:FIM article). I don't really expect it to be shorter than Middle-earth since there are tributary (can't think of the word right now so just using river vocab) articles (lots of "main article" hatnotes). Then again, we can provide a lot less information about Equestria than Middle-earth since there's not as much coverage. This article also doesn't mention G5. While it hasn't been released yet, I think a sentence or paragraph about it could be useful. Pamzeis (talk) 05:51, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll definitely make sure to attribute the text to you when I add it to the page. I just finished chopping down and re-writing the "History" and "Technology and Magic" sections so I'm probably gonna take a break until tomorrow. @Pamzeis: I added most of the content from your sandbox to the page, its helped to build it out a lot. I made some edits to integrate it into the test, and removed some older, worse content. I also cleaned up some of the messy infobox sprawl so it looks much nicer now. There's so much work to be done but I'm starting to see real improvement. That's a good point @Dimadick: but Equestria is also an overview article it just doesn't have as many supporting pages. The problem is that LoTR has way WAY more secondary and tertiary sources than MLP. These are the books and articles that support detailed geographic and linguistic analyses of Middle-earth. There are literal academic journals just about Tolkien's work. We don't have anything near that level of scholarship for MLP unfortunately. This means that we can't properly explore Equestria on the scale that Middle-earth is. That's why so much of the Equestria article was (and still is) original research or primary sources (the show and comics). If this article is ever gonna get cleaned up and un-tagged (let alone reach GA status) we're gonna have to remove the cruft even if its painful.
