Why are SUA figures used for the population count of the Gold Coast as opposed to the SA4 Gold Coast count ? Isn't the Substate region based on SA4 more accurate to account for the actual Gold COast region ? Or why not the LGA since the City of Gold Coast was formed by combining all the LGAs under the Gold Coast Metropolitan area? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sdinesh2222 (talk • contribs) 04:06, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This article isn't about the City of Gold Coast (where the LGA population data is appropriate). This article exists as a not-well-defined place that is whatever the person writing it think constitutes "the Gold Coast" which seems to be "you know, where you go on holidays". Some people have wanted to include parts of northern NSW, e.g. Tweed Heads, Kingscliffe, on the grounds that tourist service providers there describe themselves "on the Gold Coast". Other people want to exclude places like Alberton on the grounds that there are no beaches there. Yet, when you read the Geography section, the boundaries for "Gold Coast City" are given. Similarly Gold Coast hinterland is another vaguely defined place which seems to mean "you know, where you go on holidays on the days you don't go to the beach". Looking at this article, it seems that it increasingly is talking about the City of Gold Coast (e.g. the list of suburbs are the suburbs of the City of Gold Coast), so perhaps the time has come to merge them as City of Gold Coast with Gold Coast, Queensland as a redirect. What do people think? Is there anything in this article which could not be included in City of Gold Coast that would make a clear point of distinction between the two topics? I've added some citations to the International Relations section, but am unsure whether I've added enough to warrant the removal of the maintenance template.

Not exactly answering your question, but, as these relationships are established/maintained by the City of Gold Coast, I think they belong in that article rather this one. The distinction between Gold Coast, Queensland and City of Gold Coast is not made clear (despite it being raised as an issue over many years), leading to two articles talking about many of the same things. I was thinking of editing the population based on last year's Significant Urban Area data release but noted we are using SA4 population figures. So wanted to be sure that I can use the SUA figure? Sdinesh2222 (talk) 21:06, 1 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
At a glance I'd wager the SUA figures are more applicable to this page, with the SA4 data being more suited for the City of Gold Coast page. KHN45 (talk) 07:49, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As to SUA vs anything else, it's all meaningless because we don't have any real sense of the scope of this article. Just check though that you don't pick one that goes south of the border. Kerry (talk) 10:24, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
