I'm not sure if this in and of itself could be used as a reference, but I know it has links to references: http://www.colorado.edu/IBS/PP/menken/courses/socy5031/sample2.PDF WhisperToMe (talk) 20:29, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Colonial House[edit]

I wonder how much notability the Colonial House complex would need to have before it is specifically mentioned. It was known in Houston in the 1980s because of commercials by Michael Pollock. http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl?id=1987_440130 WhisperToMe (talk) 05:15, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I remember this guy. I recall that he would give a VCR to anyone who would lease an apartment at this place. Is the Colonial House complex still there? Postoak (talk) 06:27, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
AFAIK it is. It's just owned by someone else. And your recollection is correct (as per the "Drugs, neglect transform `single scene' to slums" article [1])
"By the time Michael Pollack, the flamboyant blond-maned apartment maven was hawking free VCRs for new tenants of Colonial House Apartments about three years ago, the neighborhood was already on the decline. Today, Colonial House is in foreclosure and police who patrol the surrounding area can point out the apartments where they routinely serve criminal warrants."

Those ads are very cool... and retro. If I could establish that Colonial House has a regional notability I could mention it specifically in this article. WhisperToMe (talk) 08:23, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And thanks for making me feel old. :P I thought I saw some archives regarding this, I'll try to track it down this (what's left of) weekend. --Hourick (talk) 07:29, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You feel old? I graduated from UH in 1982 and moved into my first apartment in beautiful Fondren Southwest (Rainy Meadows Apts. on Bobwhite). The place was incredible and run like a resort. We had a 24 hour Weingarten's store, Target and a multiplex theater nearby. Rapid change around 1986 when I left. Postoak (talk) 18:36, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Education section[edit]

Hi, just chiming in with some suggestions per a message left on my talk page by WhisperToMe. I just tried to rewrite the Education section because it jumps from one topic to another and back again, but I got too confused. I think the section should be ordered early childhood/elementary/middle/high (no need for subheadings, just paragraphs) rather than chronologically. Someone with knowledge of this area (who hopefully would not become as confused as I did) should rewrite this section - plot what the section should say, then rewrite it in one go, because it currently reads like bits of info were added here and there. Feel free to take information out - for example, the free lunch programs are mentioned more than once. I would also merge the public and private education sections and rename "Colleges and universities" to "Community college". Hope that helps, and sorry I was unable to make the changes myself. :( Somno (talk) 06:01, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so far the elementary/middle schools section is organized like this:

But that seems haphazard. I'll think about how to reorganize the section. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:39, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

History section[edit]

The following sentence in the History section does not make any sense at all and it needs to be re-written: "A July 17, 1988, Houston Chronicle article stated that rent rates were about the same at poorly-maintained apartments in Gulfton and other Houston areas and well-maintained apartments in other areas in Houston."RJN (talk) 22:55, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Responses to comments in the failed FA nomination[edit]

This is in response to some sections of Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Gulfton, Houston/archive1.

In response to some of Blueap's points about the photos:

As for Aude's concerns, one aspect is "The reasoning given "agency originally envisioned "more of an express service" in that area" leaves me puzzled. What is meant by express service or what form? an express bus line? More information on the University Line, as it relates to Gulfton would be useful." - The agency envisioned an express light rail service. I'll see if this needs to be more clearly indicated or if it is clearly indicated. As for how the proposed line related to Gulfton, I'll see if METRO has finalized a route and the number of stops. Also there are many articles about DRG, HUD, and the Colonial House apartments. AFAIK they say little about Gulfton itself, but it is an interesting part of the history. WhisperToMe (talk) 14:26, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of Gulfton Drive[edit]

At a lecture at the Museum of Natural Science I learned that Gulfton originates from the Gulf Oil Company, and the Fournace section was renamed after a Texaco employee since they did not want to be on a street named after a competitor.

But I want to find a hard RS so I can source the tidbit in the article... WhisperToMe (talk) 01:30, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Harris County block book maps[edit]

I'll do Gulfton's later, but I found a bit of Westmoreland Farms which indicates where development went:
