The first sentence of the lead currently reads as follows: Saturday Night Live (often abbreviated to SNL) is an American late-night live television political satirical sketch comedy variety show created by Lorne Michaels and developed by Dick Ebersol that airs on NBC and streams on Peacock. However, I think there are too many descriptions in the sentence (do we really have to clarify every single genre?) thus I am starting this discussion.
Here are a few options, though I am open to more variations:
Option 1: ... is an American late-night live sketch comedy show... My personal choice, as the show is characterized by being live and sketch comedy.
Option 2: ... is an American late-night live sketch comedy variety show... An editor on WP:DISCORD suggested that variety be included.
Option 3: ... is an American late-night live political comedy (or political satire) show... Another suggestion from an editor on Discord.
Option 1 is the clearest definition. While the show is sometimes political and satirical, it's often just silly. A "political satire" show sounds like the entire show is political satire, which is definitely not the case. Toughpigs (talk) 16:31, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Sure, the show's sketches can be political, but that's a result of them writing to current events to keep the show topical. It's not specifically political in purpose. The inclusion of "live" is fundamentally defining (it's in the name). "Variety" is logical, because although the show does primary consist of live and pre-filmed sketches, it also includes "Weekend Update", a satirical newscast parody (which isn't really a sketch as the term is strictly defined) and musical performances by guest acts. So to that end I would say Option 2 is the best descriptor. oknazevad (talk) 17:37, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Option 2 is probably best, because the monologue and musical performances (and arguably Weekend Update) fall under the broader "variety" umbrella. Option 1 is also fine. Option 3 is bad, as the focus of the show is not politics. If more words need to be cut, "sketch comedy" is not particularly necessary because the rest of the first paragraph explains the format of the show.
