Gowland enjoyed mountaineering, making the first recorded ascent on several peaks of the Japanese Alps, a name which Gowland coined and which was published in 1888 by Basil Hall Chamberlain in his Japan Guide.
Is this Chamberlain and Mason's A Handbook for Travellers in Japan (3rd and further editions, 1891 onwards), or its predecessor, Satow and Hawes' A Handbook for Travellers in Central and Northern Japan (1881 and 1884, I think)? (The publisher of both, John Murray, marketed the former as the successor to the latter, and numbered its editions accordingly.) Or is it something else? -- Hoary (talk) 23:50, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The Japanese source [『男の隠れ家』 2010年9月号 “日本アルプス”を愛した男、W・ウェストン 田畑真一 p.17(『世界山岳百科事典』 岩間正夫編)] states 1881, which would indicate that it is indeed " A Handbook for Travellers in Central and Northern Japan" which was first issued by John Murray that year. I believe that the 1888 date in the article is incorrect. --MChew (talk) 16:00, 9 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
