There seems no consensus on the definition of a political party, but for this template we need to draw a line between political parties and other political organizations.
FYI, several Japanese laws provide definitions of a political party although they are not identical (see article on Japanese Wikipedia). However, they are so strict that New Party Daichi is not considered to be a political party. I would like to relax the criteria. Specifically, I would like to include groups that fulfill one of the following conditions:
Political parties recognized by law (e.g. LDP and DPJ).
Those which have seats in the National Diet (e.g. New Party Daichi).
Those which have seats in local assemblies nationwide (e.g. New Socialist Party).
I admit the third criteria is ambiguous and might need to be reconsidered. In any case, political groups that fail to have seats even in local assemblies should be removed. --Nanshu (talk) 12:46, 29 April 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for that Nanshu. I had thought about cleaning up the template sometime last year but never got off my lazy butt to do so. Thanks for putting in the effort. Simon-in-sagamihara (talk) 04:31, 23 June 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
