The Old Man is an upcoming American thriller television series based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Thomas Perry. It was developed by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine and is set to premiere on FX on June 16, 2022.[1]
Dan Chase is a former CIA operative who has been living off the grid for quite some time. When an assassin arrives and tries to take Chase out, the old operative must go on the run. While on the run, Chase rents a room from Zoe McDonald, with whom he is forced to partner up as he fights for the truth.
With Chase flushed out of hiding, the FBI's Assistant Director for Counterintelligence, Harold Harper, is called on to hunt him down because of his complicated past with the rogue fugitive. Working alongside Harper is his protégé Agent Angela Adams and Agent Raymond Waters with Julian Carson, a highly trained special ops contractor sent to pursue Chase as well.

The series was announced in July 2019, with FX ordering a pilot. Jeff Bridges was cast to star.[4] In September, Jon Watts was set to direct the pilot, also serving in an executive producer role, with John Lithgow and Amy Brenneman added to the cast.[5][6] Alia Shawkat joined in October.[7] In November, Bob Iger announced that the show would air on FX on Hulu, and Austin Stowell was added to play a younger version of Bridges' character.[8][9] In February 2020, Kenneth Mitchell disclosed he had a role in the series.[10] Stowell would be recast in March 2020 with Bill Heck, and Gbenga Akinnagbe was cast in a main role. Leem Lubany and EJ Bonilla were also cast in the same month.[11] Navid Negahban and Pej Vahdat were cast in recurring roles in December 2020.[12]
The series was two-thirds of the way into shooting when production shut down in mid-March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.[13] Production resumed in the fall with three episodes remaining to film,[13] but was soon halted when Bridges was diagnosed with lymphoma in October 2020 and left to undergo cancer treatment.[14] The show stayed in production for a short period after Bridges' diagnosis in order to shoot scenes from the remaining episodes that do not feature Bridges' character.[13] In September 2021, Bridges announced his cancer was in remission. Production ultimately resumed in February 2022.
The series is slated to premiere on June 16, 2022 on FX in the United States and Canada.[15][1] It is also scheduled to premiere on Disney+ (Star) in international markets and Star+ in Latin America in 2022.[16]
