You recently edited List of racing cyclists and pacemakers with a cycling-related death, changing all instances of the word "accident" to the word "crash". A couple of things...1)these changes are not minor and this edit is marked as Minor. Also, 2)It would have been collegial to post a complete reason for changing the wording on the List's talk page, citing the standards you are espousing, as opposed to your edit summary of Improved language to better conform with standards. Whose standards? Accidents apparently don't exist any more, just cycling "crashes". If usage has indeed changed in news reporting or maybe this change in terminology is something that the cycling world now prefers or maybe it's a standard according to a reliable source like the MLA, then that source or sources would be useful, especially going forward for deaths added to the List. Thank you for helping explain some of the mechanics in Elden Ring. I've tried my best to explain it to a general audience, but inevitably my own experience with the game probably adds some jargon in there. Once again, thank you for helping remove that :). ‡ The Night Watch ω (talk) 14:12, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
I think you are confused about the edit request to which I replied, and (apparently) the need for reliable sources for all changes made here. I bit no one; I simply requested a source for the change the editor was requesting (which had nothing to do with a typo). General Ization Talk 23:12, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
Hello Dreameditsbrooklyn
Thank you for your thoughtful response.
The reason I reverted to "accident" was a quick reference to Collins English Dictionary, which defines "crash" as to cause (a car, etc) to collide with another car or other object; or (of two or more cars) to be involved in a collision. However (not wanting to be too pedantic) I accept that this could be extended to the derailing of a single train.
I think that your suggestion of "disaster" plus "derailment" is an excellent compromise, especially in view of the horrific nature of this early incident on the Versailles to Paris line.

Hi Dreameditsbrooklyn! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at Valhalla train crash that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. - Sumanuil. OK. To give you some due, I did look this up and it seems that yes, the AP has made such a rule and I understand their justification for doing so (that using "accident" implies a lack of fault where that determination may not yet have been made).
However ... making a wholesale change to articles here on the basis of what the AP Stylebook says is not how we do things (in this case, you are being a little too bold. If it were, I'd long ago have won over everyone who I have tussled with over the use of "murder" in articles where no suspect has been identified, much less convicted, since "murder" is in the US at least a matter of statutory law and thus cannot be said to have occurred until (and only as long as) a conviction stands (those discussions did lead to WP:DEATHS, but that only seems to apply to US cases as in the UK and other Commonwealth countries murder is defined under common law (although I'd argue that that definition still requires a conviction).
So for that reason I am asking you to just stop doing this right now. (Consider that this may also be considered a contentious topic and continued action could lead to a block that only an ArbCom appeal could lift).
Now, if you'd like, I am willing to open a discussion on WT:MOS or wherever else it might be appropriate as to whether we should formalize this in the MOS. That is the way to do this (frustrating sometimes, I can tell you from experience, but at least it can resolve the dispute). Let me know. Daniel Case (talk) 14:01, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
I decided to look through the archives at the MOS talk pages (I feel this would be best raised at WP:WOW) and found this discussion from eight years ago, to get a sense of where people were on this at the time. Daniel Case (talk) 14:23, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in Portal:Current events, disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems.
