The result of the discussion was: Textbook WP:NFCC#1 & WP:NFCC#8 violation. No prejudice to restoration if the article is significantly expanded with sourced critical commentary explicitly discussing each image in-depth -FASTILY 08:20, 15 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Seven non-free files being used in various parts of Joan White in a WP:DECORATIVE manner which fails WP:NFCC#8 (WP:NFC#CS). Three of the photos (File:Joan White Jonah and the Whale.jpg, File:Joan White Peggy Cummins Junior Miss 1043.jpg and File:Paul Scofield Joan White A Phoenix Too Frequent 1946.jpg) appear to have been taken while White was performing in the UK, and, thus, would be subject to c:COM:United Kingdom. The remaining four might be within the public domain under US copyright law and perhaps could possibly be relicensed as either ((PD-US-not renewed)) for photos published prior to Janaury 1, 1964, or ((PD-US-no notice)) for photos published prior to January 1, 1978. More information about their respective provenances of all of the photos, however, needs to be found to assess whether they can be converted to public domain.
Given that White is deceased, it might be possible to use one non-free photo for primary identification purposes at the top of the article per item 10 of WP:NFCI as long as there are no outstanding WP:NFCCP issues, but the remaining six will probably need to be deleted if they cannot be converted to public domain. For reference, File:Joan White 1950.jpg is currently being used for primary identification purposes at the top of the article, but its file description describes it as being unpublished and from a private collection which could be a problem per WP:NFCC#4 since all non-free images are required to be c:COM:PUBLISHED to be considered OK to use per WP:NFC#Meeting the previous publication criterion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:24, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The top image of Joan White is incorrectly labeled “Not published”. No one knows whether it was published, but it probably was, in Spotlight the actors’ directory. If it is not, Spotlight would certainly have other pictures of her. This will require some transatlantic inquiries.
All my pictures are publicity material. Attached to the picture of James Mason is a detailed and cogent presentation of why publicity photos are in the public domain. I note the article This Happy Breed presents a picture with the same rationale that I have used. So that is settled.
It has further come to my attention that the pictures Junior Miss, A Phoenix Too Frequent, Waltz of the Toreadors, You Never Know and This Happy Breed are all scans from newspaper pages (The Sketch, Tatler, Berkshire Eagle (twice) and The Times). The tag ((Non-free newspaper image|image has rationale=yes)) indicates that newspaper images are considered public domain. I refer to the article Housemaster (play). The first four pictures are public domain in the UK because they were created over 70 years ago.Roryjohnston (talk) 06:09, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Those that were first published in the UK are unlikely to be in the public domain in the US until 95 years after their initial publication, due to the URAA restorations. Apart from the three noted as British by the OP, this also seems to include File:Rehearsal of This Happy Breed 1987.jpg. Those first published in the Berkshire Eagle in 1960 and 1962 could well be in the public domain as not renewed. After searching the database, I couldn't find any renewals for newspaper issues of the Berkshire Eagle, and I do think that publicity photos would have been very unlikely to have been renewed separately. @Roryjohnston: Publicity photos are not automatically within the public domain, at least not under US copyright law, simply because they're publicity photos. The information on File:James Mason Studio Publicity.jpg doesn't mean that publicity photos are within the public domain just because they're publicity photos per se; they're in the public domain if certain conditions are met. If the photos were first published in the US on or after January 1, 1928, but before January 1, 1978, then they might be within the public domain if it can clearly be shown they were either first published without a copyright notice or were published with such a notice but their copyright wasn't renewed; however, most photos you find online tend to be crops or otherwise modified images lacking a border or view of the photo's back and many copyright notices (particularly for publicity photos) were often found in such places. So, a cleaner, unmodified version of the photo and its back would help verify its copyright status. In addition, newspaper images are not automatically considered to be in the public domain and ((non-free newspaper image)) doesn't imply they are. Photos appearing in newspapers are generally covered by the copyright of the paper as a whole (as long as they were first published in said paper); so, the copyright status of the newspaper itself needs to be assessed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:24, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned file whose public domain status in the US, also its source country, is difficult to justify precisely. It is not clear that this was published before 1928. Given that the collection from which this image is sourced does not seem to know when it was made, I doubt its copyright was renewed, so if it was exhibited publicly before 1963, ((PD-US-not-renewed)) could be another option. Claimed that this is used on 2023 Cricket World Cup opening ceremony article, nut that article doesn't exist, as that event didn't happen. On 2023 Cricket World Cup where it has been added, it fails WP:NFCC#8. Joseph2302 (talk) 19:40, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
