Misleading and technically incorrect, as the subject of the target article does not hold the title of Crown Prince. Recently created, unlikely search term. Suggest deletion. Paul_012 (talk) 14:04, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thai crown prince

The result of the discussion was retarget Thai crown prince to Crown Prince of Thailand and Next king of Thailand to Chakri dynasty#Line of succession to the Thai throne. -- Tavix (talk) 17:50, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm bundling these, but we may decide on different outcomes for them. As far as I can tell, Thailand has no crown prince at the moment. 11-year-old Dipangkorn Rasmijoti is the only Thai prince now, but his father (now the king) wasn't named crown prince until the age of 20. And if "Next king of Thailand" can apply to anyone, it's probably the young prince, those his article is inconsistent as to whether he's truly in the line of succession, and I understand Thai law is not very clear on the matter either. Still, based on Chakri dynasty#Line of succession to the Thai throne, he's the only male in any sort of position to be the next king. So I think each of these redirects should be deleted or retargeted to Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, and would not object to different outcomes for the two. --BDD (talk) 21:09, 8 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Boldly retarget per Paul 012 AngusWOOF (barksniff) 20:21, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Relisting comment: I presume there's consensus to retarget Thai crown prince to Crown Prince of Thailand, but I'm unsure if there's consensus for Next king of Thailand

The result of the discussion was disambiguate, although I've done it at Märchen instead of Marchen since most entries use the umlaut. -- Tavix (talk) 17:31, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure whether this should retarget Fairy tale, to which Märchen redirects and at which the term with the "ä" is extensively mentioned, or to be kept here, or the target to be moved over, or for this to be turned into a DAB. There's no hatnote at the existing target, though of coruse that is easily fixed. (I mention it because relying on hit counts is useless when we don't know where readers expected to end up). The only link is from List of Hell Teacher Nūbē chapters as a chapter (202) called "Marchen Miki-chan"" which I imagine is more likely to mean the fairy-tale than then Unicode block, but is probably just best unlinked: the creator User:Nihonjoe might shine a light on the Japanese meaning. The result of the discussion was retarget to the new dab at Avenida España. --BDD (talk) 20:58, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've done an WP:RM for España Avenue (Trujillo) to be moved over España Avenue, as I can't do it myself for some reason (it hasn't any history after creation and is not protected, but for some reason I can't do it.) Assuming that is done, this should be redirected to the same place. España Boulevard makes no mention of any España Avenue, and I couldn't find any mention in sources, so even an ((R from incorrect name)) would seem unlikely: the best solution is to move the article over the redirect and hatnote the two, of course. (In the UK, the "Crescent", "Avenue", "Road", "Street" etc. is an important part of the name of the highway: if you were directed to "Park Road" you would assume you were in the wrong place if you found yourself in "Park Street", but in the US I think less so, swhere you're directed to "go to Park and Main", so it's a reasonable confusion.) Sorry to use RfD as a memo pad but I'm inclined to forget these things, and this way I can link back from the RM etc. Si Trew (talk) 15:21, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Back-formed from LGV Est européenne, 0 hits in 90 days, no internal links. I'm not that fussed about it but without the acute accent it makes it a little bit WP:RFD#D5 nonsense. Completely WP:OR, immensely unlikely search term. CMD (talk) 07:46, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find uses of this in sources, but for the second, there are a couple of articles (I think one a reprint of the other) titled "The Islamic Republic of Sudan?" (such as here foreignpolicy.com/2010/06/10/the-islamic-republic-of-sudan-2/) but one is ((subscripition required)) and the other sudaneseonline.org/cs/blogs/articles/archive/2010/08/17/the-islamic-republic-of-sudan.aspx I think is a (published, RS) opinion piece on the original article. This page must retarget to Wikipedia:Notability (events). Changed my mind: must be disabiguated per Eureka Lott. The redirect page is linked less by low amount of pages, and its current target is tagged as "inactive". I can change the link to "Wikipedia:WikiProject Northern Emirates" and pipe it as "WP:NE"... Or I can change link to "Wikipedia:Notability (events)" if any of pages refers to it. George Ho (talk) 07:31, 18 December 2016 (UTC); edited. 19:25, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, George Ho, I couldn't understand what you meant by changing the links at first. You mean, just make sure that current links point to the right place, if we retarget it? OK, I'm neutral on this, historical versions of the pages will still point to the wrong place, but that's true of anything and we can always add a hatnote to the new target. Si Trew (talk) 13:50, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I mean. Did the editors mention Notability (events) or something else? George Ho (talk) 13:52, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I meant either re-link to the current target or "Notability (events)", whatever an editor meant. George Ho (talk) 14:12, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Another exercise in combinatorics. Which of these are at all useful to readers? The old ones, the eubot ones, the new ones, the ones that any decent search engine will find anyway? INone is individually harmful, but it just seems WP:COSTLY to have to maintain every possible variant of a noble's name. Delete the eubot ones, for a start. Si Trew (talk) 02:05, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. Some points here: (a) deleting redirects does not save resources – you cite an essay which is probably not generally accepted, and the examples here do not match any given there; (b) I think it is particularly fallacious to say as that essay does that "Wikipedia has a very good search facility" (the current version struggles over commas); (c) I think it is fallacious in general to argue from discovery methods, because we have no way of knowing what methods people may use; and (d) aliases for people, especially those with titles, are very useful, as experience on Wikidata shows. You could just leave such things alone, actually. Charles Matthews (talk) 20:42, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(a) I wasn't arguing about saving computer resources; the essay is not policy but plenty of people cite essays as a shorthand rather than repeat the arguments presented therein, (b) I didn't say Wikipedia's search engine was very good, I said it was "decent", and in particular it ignores hyphens and diacritics when searching unless titles differ only by those, (c) It doesn't matter how people "discovered" the redirect but we we have a statistics tool that tells us how often it is actually used and (d) these aren't aliases for people,, they are minute variations on the same name. Si Trew (talk) 23:56, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well then, I'd be interested under (a) to see a reference to an actual cost-benefit analysis of deleting redirects (including the overheads of debate). And under under (d) "alias" qua "also known as" is the correct term as seen on Wikidata. You state that the current search engine here ignores diacritics. Not all search engines do so: and the engine here onsite has been changed, in recent memory. I would particularly object to the removal of redirects that simplify by taking off diacritics. In my view it benefits the project to have those around. Calling them "minute" variations is just rhetoric: they can make or break links. You noticed that the top one is twice linked to? And members of the nobility do just have a large stock of name variants. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:24, 19 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
