  The rule of thumb I go by is that if the redirect is a spelling variation or synonym of the subject of the article, it's a good redirect, but if the redirect is a subtopic of the target article's subject (such as an example of the target article's subject), unless the redirect is mentioned (preferably identified) in the target article, the redirect's existence can be problematic since the target article doesn't give any hints why the redirect led the reader there.
