Karakoram International University or Karakoram University (KIU; Urdu: قراقرم انٹرنیشنل یونیورسٹی) is a public sector university located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan. It was established in 2002 with a charter from the Federal Government of Pakistan, aiming to increase access to higher education in Gilgit-Baltistan. KIU is one of the two public universities in Gilgit–Baltistan. There are currently two faculties in the university: Sciences and Humanities/Social Sciences.[citation needed]

The KIU has been chartered as a multi-campus institution. The campus, situated on the University Road in Gilgit, is well-constructed; however, Skardu campus was established in 2011 with programs from four departments. The Skardu Campus is under construction. The core facilities have been ensured. As of 2007, there were around 2000 students enrolled. A third of these were women.[1] It was announced[when?] that Chinese lessons would be offered in future to increase trade ties with China.[2]

History

The Karakoram International University is the first university in Gilgit-Baltistan which provides quality education for all. It was established with a charter from the Federal Government of Pakistan and by the orders of the then president Pervez Musharraf.

Karakoram International University is situated before the backdrop of steep mountains at the junction point of Ghizer and the Hunza River. The main campus of the university is located in Konodass, Gilgit. There are two main campuses of The Karakoram International University. Its main campus is situated on the University Road, which is easily accessible from the airport and the bus station. A bridge has also been constructed between Gilgit airport and the university to fascilitate convenient transportation. The sub-campus of the Karakoram International University in the Skardu region was inaugurated by the former Chief Minister of Gilgit-Balitistan Syed Mehdi Shah in July 2011. This campus is located at the Hussainabad Road in Skardu.

According to its charter, Karakoram International University is a multi-campus university. Additional campuses are seeking to be established in feasible localities. Currently, the main campus of the Karakoram International University has nearly 2300 students, more than 100 faculty members and over a hundred administrative staff in sixteen different academic departments. The Skardu Campus has been started with four main departments which are English, Computer Sciences, Business Management and Education.[1]

The main campus is situated on the University Road in Gilgit.[4] In 2011, a satellite campus was established in Skardu.[5] In 2016, another satellite campus was established in Hunza.[6]

In August 2017, a new USAID-funded Faculty of Education building was inaugurated by Mission Director Jerry Bisson and the President of Pakistan, Mamnoon Hussain at the Gilgit-Baltistan campus.[7][8]
