The official site www.saipan.navy.mil has given "host not found" from my location for several months. Does it work from the US?
I served onboard the USS Saipan from February '87 to Nov '88, and I swear to God that we were in dry dock from approx Oct 87 to at least Nov '88 for a major overhaul/refitting.
Does anyone out there know why this fact is never mentioned anywhere? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jinian (talk • contribs) 13:19, 28 September 2005

The Saipan was decommissioned April 25 2007, wasn't it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.87.162.132 (talk) 15:26, 27 July 2008 (UTC)
SAIPAN rescue of M.Y. HUNTRESS | |

The United States Navy on the World Wide Web. A service of the Navy Office of Information, Washington DC. Send feedback/questions to comm...@chinfo.navy.mil The United States Navy web site is found on the Internet at http://www.navy.mil HEADLINE: USS SAIPAN Comes to the Aid of Burning Yacht ON BOARD USS SAIPAN - Just after midnight on 28 July 1998, USS SAIPAN (LHA 2) was proceeding to the island of Kerkira (Corfu) in the Ionian Sea for a scheduled port visit when the ship received a distress call from Motor Yacht HUNTRESS. The 144-foot motor yacht's engineroom was reportedly engulfed in flames, and the eight-member crew was in peril. Seven members of the crew made it to life rafts while the skipper remained aboard to continue communications with SAIPAN, which proceeded immediately to the scene and deployed her own ready life boat to rescue the crew. Two hours after the initial distress call, the crew of HUNTRESS, six men and two women from the United States, England and Australia, were safely aboard SAIPAN and in good condition. While SAIPAN'S medical team looked after the crew, the ship quickly organized an emergency fire fighting team to battle the blaze aboard HUNTRESS and attempt to save the vessel. HUNTRESS'S master and another crew member were provided protective clothing and joined DC2. Joseph Riggs, USN and his attack team in fighting the blaze. "We tried to isolate the fire. We sent over enough equipment to fight the fire for a long time if we had to." said SAIPAN'S Damage Control Assistant, LCDR. Charles Landrum, USN. "We had an electrical fire that engulfed the engineroom," said HUNTRESS First Mate John Butler, an American. "We soon realized it was more than we could handle." 1M Butler said that HUNTRESS had been entertaining guests on the Greek island of Kefallina the day before and the vessel was enroute to Italy. "We knew an American Navy ship was in the area in the afternoon... and the U.S. Navy's response was tremendous. God we were lucky. None of us speak Greek. We couldn't have asked for any more than to have a Navy warship in the area," Butler said. The rescue occurred 98 miles southwest of Corfu and 57 miles due east of the Greek island of Nisos. Position: 380310N/0190720E. "We are definitely happy that if anybody was going to rescue us it would be the U.S. Navy. We feel very safe," said Adrienne Piggott of Wisconsin. Despite the valiant efforts of the ship's firefighters, the blaze aboard HUNTRESS, registered to the Cayman Islands, could not be brought under control. The ship's master, Captain Mike Holms from California, left SAIPAN'S Medical Ward for one last look at his sinking vessel. "I would have been better off staying in Medical," he said calmly. "At least we're alive." REFERENCES: 1. DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY. USS SAIPAN (LHA-2). FPO AE 09549-1605. 5750, Ser 32/088, 16 Mar 99.
