I was recently criticizing an FLC article I was reviewing because the references for Australian certifications were using titles obviously quite different from those actually used by ARIA. The nominator explained that the results were generated by the Cite certification templates and he didn't know what to do about the mismatching results. I have allowed myself the liberty of coming here and tweaking the template, at least for the particular (and to me, glaring) example of Australia, potentially (over time) for others.
I hope this departure from the philosophy of always using "(({region))} (({type))} certifications" doesn't offend Muhandes (who has done some great work here) or anybody else. If this rubs anybody the wrong way they should feel free to speak up right away. (Stop me before I edit again, Bwahahahaha!) — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 11:53, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
Changes made to sidestep (i.e., not use) ((Certification Cite/Title))
giving us
in favor of generating
Notice that I've completely disregarded the artist and title, since they are of no use in searching for AUS certs and ARIA doesn't provide artist- or title-specific cert documents.
Input/plausibility checks: Now tests first for presence of certyear
; if found proceeds to test for valid type
. Invalid or missing type
and missing certyear
produce a red error message in the ref list instead of expanding the ((cite))
template.
One idea I had but did not build into the plaus checking is to accept uppercase/lowercase/mixed case type
parameters, then test the lowercase version (((lc: (({type))} ))
, I believe) for validity before passing of the forced-lowercase version as a parameter to ((Certification Cite/URL))
. Is this useful and worthwhile, or would it just make the template code unnecessarily complex? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 12:11, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
((Certification Cite/Title))
and used for Belgium, Europe, Hungary and the rest who use this format. I also think warnings are a good idea, I just never had time to add them all. --Muhandes (talk) 12:27, 21 October 2011 (UTC)
Currently ((Certification Cite/Title))
gives us something like
and ((Certification Cite/URL))
yields three possibilities:
However the <title> on these swisscharts.com pages is always "The Official Swiss Charts and Music Community". The heading in the page content is "Awards 2009" (or whatever year sought) or just "Awards" when we perform a search (for artist, title or both). In the current default case, we go to the Awards page with no year specified, and swisscharts.com defaults to current year's certs, so we get "Awards 2011".
I'm proposing to change the title in the generated ref to more closely match swisscharts.com's <title>/headings, probably by concatenating them with a colon. So our default case is "The Official Swiss Charts and Music Community: Awards 2011". There'd be no artist and no title.
The table below shows the various permutations and the proposed title in each case. I've abbreviated the "The Official Swiss Charts and Music Community:" bit as "TOSCaMC:".
Other parameters provided | Year? | |
---|---|---|
Provided certyear (e.g., 2009)
|
No certyear
| |
Neither artist , nor title
|
TOSCaMC: Awards 2009 | |
Only artist , no title
|
TOSCaMC: Awards (Eminem) | TOSCaMC: Awards (Eminem) |
Only title , no artist
|
TOSCaMC: Awards ('Not Afraid') | TOSCaMC: Awards ('Not Afraid') |
Both title and artist
|
TOSCaMC: Awards (Eminem; 'Not Afraid') | TOSCaMC: Awards (Eminem; 'Not Afraid') |
Example of resulting citations then are:
Here, I've somewhat favored the status quo logic rather than make a big change, assuming it's the most reasonable or helpful approach if we have title, artist and year. Swisscharts allows the search for both artist and title at the same time, but then we have to ignore the year. If we have a year and either artist or title (or both), is it better to search for the artist or title (or both), or should we just give the year's awards page? I've stuck with doing a search using what we're given, as it might help us quickly see if a song we've known was gold (in 2008) has later moved to platinum (2009) or double-platinum (2011). Other ideas welcomed.
Input/plausibility checks: None yet. EDIT: Requires one of artist, title, or certyear.–JFP What should be added? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 07:11, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
date
parameter in ((cite web))
. We'll still allow users to enter it, but we'll just ignore it. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 08:17, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
((Certification Cite/Title))
redundant. I have no problem with that, I just thought it was too much work.((Certification Cite/Title))
. It's a good little template and nicely covers the generic case, uh, generically. I don't know how much of the other, non-generic cases I'll get finished before I'm pulled in some other direction (and I have no intention of breaking my foot just to spend time on this). At least I can chip away at the bigger differences so the cert refs slowly edge closer to their sources. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 09:26, 24 October 2011 (UTC)Okay, I've changed the template as discussed and now seen in the table above. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 06:53, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Currently ((Certification Cite/Title))
gives us something like
or similar, possibly without artist or title, except at least one must be included, and if the user doesn't specify album/single/video, we get something in the form
Since the BVMI site uses "Gold-/Platin-Datenbank" in both <title>
and <h1>
elements, I'm about to change it now so that the ref title is more like one of
depending on what we're given to search for. I'm not planning on giving any indication of what best
is set to. The BVMI accepts a year (Jahr) parameter, but we don't use this, even if user enters a certyear
parameter value in the template.
Input/plausibility checks:
artist
or title
(or both) are provided/type
parameter, considering anything other than "album", "single", or "video" to be the same as "all". Whatever is entered as type
is currently passed to visible title via ((Certification Cite/Title))
. In future this should be checked for one of the allowed entries, and simply ignored if it's something else (no error message). If user types "ablum" (or the German "alben") for an Eminem search and get all his singles, too, user will have to figure out the problem without the template's help. Or do you disagree? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 22:17, 5 November 2011 (UTC)A couple of months ago, the Radioscope site went down, or at least, its pages we're no longer served following "some hacking" at the site. So New Zealand certs sourced from there were no longer verifiable (but theoretically, a new site is coming Real Soon Now).
Then, a few weeks ago, the morons at RIANZ tossed out their old site with their weekly charts, many used by pages here at WP. Now there's a redirect to a page that gives us 30 images of single covers, which may have a tiny ribbon denoting a gold or platinum cert. There's a suggestion that (perhaps starting from the recent change-over) the date at the upper-right is a drop-down list with links to other weeks' charts. So far, that doesn't work for me, but then, the page never finishes loading either, as near as I can tell.
Why do these big-money recording-company associations have the worst Web sites?
Well, in light of this, any template work for NZ certs is pointless. Maybe someday we'll be able to reverse-engineer the site to point to specific (old) certs, but for right now, I don't think there's anything to reverse-engineer. There seems to be no useable archive of NZ certs on the Web, meaning no NZ certs (except 30 singles and 30 albums, during any one week) can be verified. So NZ is on indefinite hold. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 12:24, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
I'll be brief and to the point here (my Wiki time is limited): I would like to expand this template to other languages (besides Ukrainian). The English Wikipedia is not the only one that constantly cites certifications, especially when it comes to recent albums and singles.
Once we find someone who edits in a foreign language and can write "wiki-code" or whatever it is that is needed, we could start with the second and third-biggest Wikipedias, namely the German and French ones.
Personally speaking, I would like there to be a cite certification template in Spanish as I do heavy music editing in the Spanish Wikipedia and I sometimes feel hindered by the lack of that template.
Please, if you have any suggestions, comments or even dissuading arguments, write them below.--Mauri96 (talk) 00:42, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
Hello everyone!
I'd like to inform whoever updates the template that the Swedish certifications from 2009-2011 have moved to new URL's. For example, the certifications from 2011 are now found here.
You can find the other two links at the "Guld & Platina" page.--Mαuri’96 “...over the Borderline” 03:15, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
It looks like the RIAA has updated its site and thus, the URL generated by this template to perform the certification search does not work anymore. Could someone update the template to resolve? Thanks. Y2Kcrazyjoker4 (talk • contributions) 02:57, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Check out the A Moon Shaped Pool page. It has a certifications table, which is cited using the template. But we also mention the certification under the "Release" section. It's uncited. I want to re-use the source cited in the certifications table, but can't figure out how to do it. What do I do? Popcornduff (talk) 05:45, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

Can someone please add URLs for 2019 certification in Australia?

I added parameter checking for Spain, and I get a flood of pages at Category:Cite certification used with missing parameters (7). I had a look and they mostly seem legit mistakes, listing certifications before 2004 without a source or after that without the week, however, if you think this is incorrect, feel free to revert my edit and let me know what went wrong. --Muhandes (talk) 14:22, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
FYI, Finland website corrected to their new website and |domestic=
now supported. Also added parameter validation, verifying |artist=

I noticed editors using https://www.elportaldemusica.es for citing certifications (I think it was Lk95) and it seems like this is a much better option than using the current listing we have. Compare
The website seems to be published by Productores de Música de España so I see no reason not to just swap to it from the existing one. Does anyone else see a reason not to use it?. By the way, there is also an option for directing to a specific album e.g. https://www.elportaldemusica.es/single/lewis-capaldi-someone-you-loved which can be supported through the |id=
parameter. --Muhandes (talk) 12:02, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

Please transfer the sandbox at ((Certification Cite/URL/sandbox)) to the main template; I have added a new URL for Swedish certifications after 2011 since the website currently used by the template (sverigetopplistan.se) was recently redesigned, making the current URL unusable as a source. Hello, I noticed when trying to do this (on Mark Ronson discography):
((Cite certification|region=Australia|type=single|certyear=2020|accessdate=12 June 2020))
that it brings up a 'missing or empty URL' error. I think the problem is that nobody has added the 2020 ARIA pages to this template, so these URLs would just need to be added:

The URL for Hungary below is causing an issue (year parameter omitted due to transclusion issues):
http://zene.slagerlistak.hu/arany-es-platinalemezek/adatbazis/
The "zene." part of the URL needs to be removed, as it is causing the direct linking to certification years to fail and instead default to the current year. The new code should look like this (year parameter omitted due to transclusion issues):
http://slagerlistak.hu/arany-es-platinalemezek/adatbazis/

How it was recommended for me, I came here to discussion page and would like to know if the commands archiveurl and archivedate could be included to identify certifications in Argentina. For example, this link:
https://web.archive.org/web/20070927004453/http://www.capif.org.ar/Default.asp?AnoFiltro=2005&CO=5&CODOP=ESOP&ACCION=+Buscar+ 9 - that shows certifications from 2001 to 2006 (it's required to choice the certification year);
and this: https://archive.is/20110706084844/http://www.capif.org.ar/Default.asp?PerDesde_MM=0&PerDesde_AA=0&PerHasta_MM=0&PerHasta_AA=0&interprete=&album=&LanDesde_MM=1&LanDesde_AA=1980&LanHasta_MM=12&LanHasta_AA=2010&Galardon=O&Tipo=1&ACCION2=+Buscar+&ACCION=Buscar&CO=5&CODOP=ESOP 9 - that shows all (or almost all) certifications in this country until 2011.
I'll be waiting. Thanks. LuanCampSouza93 (talk) 20:34, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Currently, the URL for Brazil certifications has a parameter called "tmidia" that is used to distinguish between singles, albums, etc. However, from what I can tell, the parameter has been renamed on the website's UI, so when visiting the Wiki template-generated URLs, the results are not filtered by media type from the full list of certifications. I think the parameter needs to be renamed "busca_tipo_produto", which is what shows up in the URL when submitting new searches from the UI. Some of the acceptable values for this parameter are "ÁLBUM" (notice the acute mark), "CD", "DVD", and "SINGLE". Can someone implement this change? The main citation option for ARIA accreditations is pages from the older ARIA website, archived by the Wayback Machine. It now seems ARIA has finally decided to provide a full list of certifications, in this folder. This is already used as the citation option for 2020 and 2021. Should these replace the existing citation option for all other years, or added as a new option? Please leave your opinion in this discussion. --Muhandes (talk) 17:24, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
@Muhandes: (or whoever can help) I am trying to use this template for a Swedish single cert at 4 Non Blondes. When I use ((cite certification|region=Sweden|artist=4 Non Blondes|type=single|certyear=1993|certweek=37|position=652|source= |access-date=August 24, 2021))
I get:
"Guld- och Platinacertifikat − År 1987−1998" (PDF) (in Swedish). IFPI Sweden. Archived from the original (PDF) on 2011-05-17. Retrieved August 24, 2021.
which links to an enormous archive PDF. In that PDF, I see my target: "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes at position (CERTNR) 652, dated 19931004, which apparently reached gold (guld). Super! What I can't seem to do is use the |position=
parameter to generate "Scroll to position 652 to view certification". I can only get this when I use |source=chart
, but that points to "Sverigetopplistan – 4 Non Blondes", which isn't where I want to go.
Does |position=
only work for the |source=chart
and |source=artist
variants? Those are only 40 or 60 items long, I believe, but the 1987–1998 archive stretches many (unfortunately unnumbered) pages, to number 1578, and a navigation tip is super helpful here. Or am I (quite possibly) doing something wrong?
Before I go I'd like to curse the PDF file itself. Not only are the pages unnumbered, but I noticed that the Platina column of the table has wrapped, making it next to impossible to determine whether a single has reached platinum, or only gold. The first half of the file lists all of the songs and their gold or non-gold status, and the second half lists platinum or multi-platinum statuses (with no visible connection to the songs listed in the first half). Are you aware of another copy of this file somewhere? Something a bit more ... friendly? Thanks,— JohnFromPinckney (talk / edits) 15:21, 24 August 2021 (UTC)

for archives as well, aiming at that specific archive. Yes, this file is cursed. I worked with it a bit back in 2011 and I still remember printing it and taping the pages together... The Russian certification link on ((Certification Cite/URL)) currently leads to a porn site and should be fixed. The article about million sales itself is not archived, so it probably makes sense to change it to a higher level article https://web.archive.org/web/20110724033119/http://www.2m-online.ru/gold_n_platinum/ which contains a link to an unarchived article. There is also an article on working site which does not seem to be a reliable source, but at the same time it states they collected data from 2m-online.ru and this looks accurate. The article is https://bestsellingalbums.org/list-of-best-selling-albums-in-russia/ , so this is another option if availability of information is more important than a non-working reliable source. About discographies whose include FIMI certs, I think would be needed a little change in command on the phrase: "Select "Tutti gli anni" in the "Anno" drop-down menu. Select "Artist" in the "Filtra" field. Select "Tutte le sezioni" under "Sezione"." Where is "Select "Artist"", it could be "Type "Artist"" instead, similar to BPI certs command, for example, that's "Type Artist in the "Search BPI Awards" field and then press Enter", due to manual search needed in this case.
