Hi there, MiszaIII doesn't seem to be archiving my articles. Seems to have stopped working. Any chance of a fix? Thanks for your help Timclare(talk)(sign here) 22:36, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Which articles? My bot serves hundreds of pages. I wish people were more specific instead of making me guess. Also, please check that the settings are correct, the template hasn't been tampered with and that there is sufficient material to be archived (at least 2 threads, with at least 5 more to remain). Misza13, can you archive my talk page. Thanks. --MisterWiki da ya think i'm sexy and ya want to speak me?, come on sugar let, come here! humour. - 23:31, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't archive talk pages. My bot does. If you wish it did so on your talk page, please read the instructions and only ask me if you encounter problems in the procedure (I strongly suggest picking a consistent archive naming convention - the bot will not guess what you have in mind). Miszabot archiving algorithm
Hello, I was wondering if you are close to providing any archiving algorithm beyond "old". Some pages should be archived as a snapshot at a specific interval, such as once a week. I could write a one-off code for what I want, but if you had something close it would be great. Gimmetrow 00:36, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, the algorithm is ready. But I have written it for a more advanced version of the bot (a rewrite from scratch, basically) which is not yet entirely assembled. Миша13 20:48, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Misza13, I tried following the instructions to import news from wikinews into Portal:Fire but am not sure where I went wrong.
Wikipedia:Wikiquette alerts was nearly 300kb, so I archived some threads which were inactive, resolved, withdrawn, or referred elsewhere. Archives 39 and 40 are both over 100 kb now, Archive 41 is barely over 60kb with room for more.

That's quite irrelevant if you remember that the ((archive box)) template accepts a parameter auto=yes which auto-displays the list of archives as long as you use a standard naming of /Archive N. Миша13 20:50, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How does displaying a list of archive page titles allow searching on the full text of the content of those pages? Or perhaps I do not understand your referent of "That". --Teratornis (talk) 21:28, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I probably misunderstood - I read that as listing/indexing the archives and not searching. Interesting tip, thanks. Миша13 20:45, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archives
Hello, I have a question regarding your bot, what's happened to archive one and two here?[3]Funkynusayri (talk) 13:38, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Funky. I'm not Misza, but I notice when you set up your archiving you set the counter to start with Archive 3. There is no evidence that 1 or 2 were ever used. EdJohnston (talk) 19:44, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, ok, there doesn't need to be evidence for anything, as I simply copied the parameters from another page, without really knowing what I was doing. What can I do yo change it? Funkynusayri (talk) 22:29, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One way to do it is: rename Archive 3 as Archive 1 (using the Move tab), rename Archive 4 as Archive 2, then edit your User_talk so that 'counter=2' in the bot instructions. The bot will then archive any newly-expiring items into Archive 2, and it will automatically increment the counter from now on as the archives fill up. EdJohnston (talk) 20:04, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bot not archiving comments marked with ((unsigned))
Hi Misza. Do you think you could edit the script to handle unsigned comments that are marked as such (e.g., [4])? I have tried both subst'ing the template, and directly using the template, but the bot does not recognize date stamp. If you need any help creating this, feel free to give me a shout; the changes should be fairly straight forward. —Preceding unsigned comment added by The Evil Spartan (talk • contribs) 17:12, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh irony, you forgot you sign your own comment.
It shouldn't matter whether the template is substed or not as long as there is a timestamp in the format of "HH:MM, D Month YYYY (UTC)" in the page's code. That thread you mention is on the other hand only 3 days old, whereas the archiving configuration for that page is set to archive 30 day old messages. Its time will come soon enough. Миша13 20:51, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This suggests that the use of ((unsigned)) with two parameters would allow the bot to take action, provided the time stamp is UTC. Even though that's a lot of typing. EdJohnston (talk) 21:33, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The auto-signing bot uses the two parameter version and so do I - it is a bit of a hassle to find the time of the post in page history (remember the "(UTC)") but I don't complain. Миша13 21:37, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You should have been more specific regarding which bot, an that you actually had your talk page in mind. Archive size by date?
Do I understand correctly that Miszabot cannot do a dated archive by size? Only numbered archive by size appears to work with current settings. --Brad (talk) 04:25, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's quite logical. If archives are named by date, then assuming it filled up to the specified maximum, where would the excess threads go? Миша13 09:09, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My thoughts for a dated archive by size would be to report first topic date to last topic date within the alloted archive size. So if an archive started at 1 March 2008, filled by size on 15 March 2008 the next sized archive would start 15 March 2008 (If there were topics left over from 15 March that did not fit) and then dated when full, etc. So, a slower talk page might get something like an archive dated 12 January 2008 to 27 June 2008. --Brad (talk) 22:32, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Dated when full" - that's the concept I didn't like when I designed the bot. That would most probably require it to move the page after it's closed - even with pywikipedia, the framework is still prone to errors and it often happens that it fails to either save an archive or the page (timeouts, edit conflicts, etc. - this is not a database and commits are not guaranteed to be atomic), not to mention having to execute an extra move. Миша13 20:26, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

TerraWhat do you want? 21:30, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please see User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo#Parameters explained. A combination of default values of minthreadsleft = 5 and minthreadstoarchive = 2 prevents the bot from acting when there are only 6 threads on your page (regardless of their age). Миша13 20:19, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello
Im planning to start a bot in the Telugu Wikipedia. Im completely new to bots and everything. could you just help me on how to set up your bot for the Telugu Wikipedia. I have the archivebot.py file which came with the pywikipedia framework. Σαι ( Talk) 06:28, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Very difficult? Σαι ( Talk) 10:10, 19 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly not trivial. Basically, you'll need a "template" like User:MiszaBot/config to place on talk pages. Then you need to run the bot - in most cases something equivalent to (and assuming the bot is configured and logged in - see pywikipedia for step-by-step instructions on using the framework):
python archivebot.py 'User:MiszaBot/config'
should do fine. But the bot can do more - like working only in specified namespaces, only on a specified page etc. A full help can be obtained by running:

Problems archiving
I have had different problems getting the bot to run (thanks for the help you have already given) but it never seems to archive my talk page every day (for the last 3days), it seems to do it sporadically.
Could you take a look and see why it hasn't archived items that were posted on 8th March and the bot ran on 11th and 12 March.
P.S. I used to use Shadowbot3 to archive my talk pages but having shut down switched over to MiszabotIII. However I think the problem above may be that it is leaving the 5 most recent items in the talk page. Is it possible to set it not to have the last 5 items left. Depends on what you mean by "lately". It did visit you yesterday and I suspect it will today (in some 3 hours from now). Mind you, however, that it will only archive when there are at least 2 threads to be moved (the default value of the minthreadstoarchive variable - you can read more about them on User:MiszaBot/Archive HowTo#Parameters explained). If you however simply want less threads on your talk page then I suggest adjusting the algo=old(5d) part from 5 days to something less - I suppose 3 should be enough in your case (it means that threads that have the newest timestamp 3 or days older will be archived). Cheers, Миша13 10:15, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MiszaBot III Non-archive?
Is there any way I can make a section not be archived [short of removing timestamps], prehaps by writing "MiszaBot, do not archive! or some such? Whilst the rest of the page is archived? Thanks, Microchip08 12:35, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is no explicit tag, but I would add some extremely futuristic timestamp like <!-- 00:00, 1 January 3000 (UTC)--> - this way the thread should never (in this millennium anyway) age to be archived. A hack, but works.
On a side note, ((talkback)) is a sorry excuse for laziness. Миша13 17:05, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I've tried to set up Miszabot to archive Wikiproject Aircraft's talk page, but must have munged it up somehow, because it doesn't seem to be working. When you've got a minute, could you please see what I've done wrong? Thanks in advance! --Rlandmann (talk) 01:18, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that normally archives should be strict subpages of page being archived. This is not the case, so the bot refuses to work. There are two solutions. The easier one is for me to provide a magic key that will unlock the restriction for that page. The appropriate one is to change the target to a subpage, i.e. archive = Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft/Archive %(counter)d and preferably move all previous archives, so they can be auto-indexed using ((archive box)). Let me know which you prefer and if you decide on moving old archives, I can run a bot that will batch-move them. Миша13 17:53, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If it's not too much hassle, could you please run the bot and relocate the old archives? Setting up "special case" exemptions is too often a recipe for disaster in the future...! --Rlandmann (talk) 07:24, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Many many thanks! :) --Rlandmann (talk) 20:45, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Talk:Omega-3 fatty acid
I added a bot header to Talk:Omega-3 fatty acid and undid the revisions after I put the wrong settings in; since then the page has not been archived at all. Is there a reason? —Werson (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 23:11, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now that Miszabot's being rewritten...
Now that Miszabot's being rewritten, I have a feature request. I think I requested it early last year, but now that it's being rewritten it would be a good time for me to ask again. It would be nice if one could change the ((archive)) template at the top of archived pages, and instead have it use a different one via the configuration template. It's always a pain to have to change it every month (the "current talkpage" link never points to the real talk page). Cheers, tim.bounceback 14:18, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I thinks that's already supported to a degree that should satisfy your needs. There is an archiveheader parameter. It uses ((talkarchive)) as default, which (I think) correctly points to the real current talk (ever since it's been fixed). Can you point out an example where it doesn't work and required manual intervention? Миша13 14:31, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, you can tell I just came back from a long wikibreak ;-). Thanks for pointing that out. Cheers, tim.bounceback 14:36, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I should probably point out that (for me) everything archives in a format like this: User talk:Tim.bounceback/Archives/Month Year, so it points to User talk:Tim.bounceback/Archives. tim.bounceback 14:42, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That seems to be the case because the fix got reverted for no good reason and I just had to reintroduce it again. Миша13 14:46, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it works now :-). tim.bounceback 19:52, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Support for nowiki date format
Hi, I'm trying to set up archivebot.py on nowiki, but it fails as we use a different date format.
We use the follwing format:
30. mar 2008 kl. 18:36 (CEST)
This is the same time as
16:36, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Note that the month names are localized, the months being "jan, feb, mar, apr, mai, jun, jul, aug, sep, okt, nov and des" and that the timezone varies between CET and CEST.
What would be the proper way add support for our date format? ZorroIII (talk) 16:53, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The bot looks like it ignored Wikipedia:WikiProject_Universities/Outreach#Delivery_options. Or at least in my case (it looks like others on the list did not receive the newsletter). It wasn't a huge issue, just a heads-up. Metros (talk) 18:38, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that's because "Metros232" is on the participant list, which is why "Metros" on the opt-out didn't exclude you from delivery. When the delivery list was ready, the bot just followed a redirect and didn't double-check against the list again. Meh, a rare bug. Миша13 19:06, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh weird. I've updated it on that list. Thanks for figuring that out, Metros (talk) 19:13, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Help archiving my talk page
I am in desperate need of help with the proper code to have MiszaBot archive my user talk page. My intention is to have the bot archive my page based on time, say every 15 days. Is this the proper code to use:
((User:MiszaBot/config
|algo = old(15d)
|archive = User talk:Ukexpat/Archives/%(year)d/%(monthname)s
))
Do I need to manually create the archive subpage(s) or does the bot create it automatically? Do I need a "counter" option so that the various archive pages are created or archived to incrementally? Help please!!! Thanks. – ukexpat (talk) 17:39, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The above looks perfectly fine to me. The bot will create the subpages on its own. Also, the counter is irrelevant when you use an archive naming scheme based on thread date, so must not be specified. Миша13 17:59, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
