Category:Fictional people by ethnic or national descent
- Nominator's rationale: This entire category tree is a mess Mason (talk) 22:09, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Added subcats
- Nominator's rationale: violates WP:OR Mason (talk) 23:37, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Oppose, do you have any other suggestions for where to place these subcategories contained by this category? AHI-3000 (talk) 22:26, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Honestly, I think that the entire category tree is overcategorization. I would strongly encourage you to slow down and engage with the people posting warnings about your category changes. I recommend that you review the rules and norms for categories before creating so many catcategory. Mason (talk) 23:44, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete - and please also nominate the "Fictional X dispora" cats too. There's far too much here that looks like WP:OR. - jc37 23:28, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment, there is a bigger tree involved here: Category:Fictional people by ethnic or national origin. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:25, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- That's an interesting point - What's the difference between "national descent" and "national origin"? Does WP:OVERLAPCAT (at least) come into play here? Looks like another reason to delete. - jc37 07:23, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- That's not really clear from the name itself (as in the tree for 'real' people), but it looks more obvious from the content: on one side, you have categories sorted by the place where characters do live (e.g. Category:Fictional Italian people by ethnic or national origin will have characters in Italy from various backgrounds) whereas on the other side, you have categories sorted by backgrounds shared by characters in several places (e.g. Category:Fictional Indian diaspora has characters of Indian background all over the world). It's a copycat from a longstanding (and long problematic) structure for non-fictional characters (Category:People by ethnic or national origin/Category:People by ethnic or national descent). I am not really convinced that this double structure is as necessary as in the other tree though, seen the amount of content. Place Clichy (talk) 08:52, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Alt merge to Category:Fictional people by ethnic or national origin and its subcategories. Fictional characters are in fact defined by ethnic stereotypes a lot more than real people. In principle such categories are therefore useful, i.e. what you find one layer below the nominated set of categories, such as Category:Fictional Indian-British people. However, seen the amount of content, it does not appear useful to spread these useful categories in a too complicated way, in an apparent attempt to mirror the bogus category hierarchy for non-fiction characters. In practice, that's the way these categories work today, e.g. Category:Fictional Italian people by ethnic or national origin will both have subcategories for diaspora characters (Fictional Italian American people) and of other various backgrounds associated with Italy (Fictional Italian Jews, Fictional Florentine people, Fictional Sicilian people, Fictional ancient Romans). In practice, this alt proposal come down to:
- Propose merging Category:Fictional people by ethnic or national descent to Category:Fictional people by ethnic or national origin
- Propose merging Category:Fictional Pakistani diaspora to Category:Fictional Pakistani people by ethnic or national origin
- Propose merging Category:Fictional Chinese diaspora to Category:Fictional Chinese people by ethnic or national origin
- Propose merging Category:Fictional Arab diaspora to Category:Fictional Arabs
- Propose merging Category:Fictional Indian diaspora to Category:Fictional Indian people by ethnic or national origin
- Propose merging Category:Fictional Japanese diaspora to Category:Fictional Japanese people by ethnic or national origin
- Propose merging Category:Fictional German diaspora to Category:Fictional German people by ethnic or national origin
- Propose merging Category:Fictional American diaspora to Category:Fictional American people by ethnic or national origin
- Place Clichy (talk) 08:52, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- support. I'd support this alternative. And, I'd also like to thank @Place Clichy for all their thoughtful work in on this (and other categories)! Mason (talk) 13:54, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:LGBT gods
- Nominator's rationale: Overlapping category (WP:OVERLAPCAT) and maybe WP:OCEGRS; I'm also nominating this one. When I searched looked that the page for Aphrodite, she didn't have anything written about being LGBT. And the more I'm thinking about this I am inclined to propose deleting the entire tree as none of the gods listed have LGBT as a defining characteristic as far as I can tell. Mason (talk) 21:53, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete all. Besides WP:NONDEF, honestly, this category looks like nonsense, as Marcocapelle said in their comment. Maybe there's material for a category along these lines, but this isn't it. Edward-Woodrow • talk 13:18, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- BTW there's another discussion regarding Category:LGBT deities. AHI-3000 (talk) 23:07, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- What does "LGBT god" even mean? Does it refer to his own sexuality, or is he a god to be worshipped for LGBT issues? The articles in the category barely touch upon the subject. This is probably better for a list, in which a detailed description can be given of any type of LGBT relationship. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:31, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete all per WP:NONDEF. –Aidan721 (talk) 13:16, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete all albeit for a different reason. I think being LGBT could well be a defining characteristic. However, this category seems to be currently haphazardly applied to any god where any story exists with vaguely LGBT theme, or unknown other reasons (some modern group writing stories implying that?). Most mythologies don't have a single authoritative source on a deity's deeds, so things like Zeus having contradictory aspects really just means that people in city X had different stories than people in city Y. This makes it very difficult to figure out which attributes are "core" and which are closer to, say, views of specific denominations of a religion. SnowFire (talk) 14:57, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- @Bearcat: you should presumably contribute to this discussion too, since you are the main contributor in the discussion about the parent category. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:09, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

- Many articles in this category refer to Murugan (including some titles). Shouldn't article Kartikeya be renamed to Murugan? Marcocapelle (talk) 20:44, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Marcocapelle, "Kartikeya" is the pan-Indian name of the deity; while Murugan is his Tamil name. Kartikeya-Murugan is most popular with Tamil people; whose temples have the name "Murugan" in it. - Nominator's rationale: Looking at this category, I would have expected to find officials of precolonial states of the Serer people such as the Kingdom of Sine. However, the category instead contains two articles about diplomats who represented Senegal in international organisations (Jacques Diouf and Cheikh Tidiane Gadio). Serer ethnicity is not even mentioned in article body, so WP:OCEGRS clearly applies. The articles are already present in Category:Senegalese diplomats, so nothing to merge. - Nominator's rationale: OVERLAPCAT. Tokelau does not have a foreign policy, as a dependent territory of New Zealand. The position of foreign minister is taken ex officio by the head of government (together with justice and other portfolios), see Council for the Ongoing Government of Tokelau. The lone article is already in Category:Heads of Government of Tokelau and Category:Government ministers of Tokelau, no need to merge. The second category would find itself empty. - Nominator's rationale: This seems like an overlapping intersection with 20th/21st century categories Mason (talk) 13:28, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Adding subcategories
- Nominator's rationale: allows for the child categories to be merged properly Mason (talk) 18:50, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Adding more subcategories
- Nominator's rationale: Found another budle. My general approach is to split PRC into 21st and 20th, and merge 20th century for RoC. I'm intentionally avoiding journalists, military, and politicians, as I think that those intersections are meaningful. Mason (talk) 20:59, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Merge. Where does this spike of splitting national categories along with regime changes come from? It is still China, before 1912, after 1949 and in-between. Place Clichy (talk) 13:55, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Procedural oppose, just lumping the subcategories to Category:Chinese people would merely create a mess. This needs some thought about the subcategories first. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:58, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- That's a good point. Let me dig into the child categories and see how to do this thoughtfully. Mason (talk) 18:48, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Striking my oppose after this has been taken care of. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:49, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep. not all Chinese people are from the People's Republic of China. Therefore the categories are distinct and do not merge. —Jonathan Bowen (talk) 19:05, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Do you still feeling this what now that I'm making it clearer where the child overlapping categories are? I'm not saying that Chinese people are all from the PRC, but the current category only has child categories and is (for many occupations) not a salient feature. Mason (talk) 19:11, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Nobody argues to move the content of Chinese categories to PRC categories, but the other way around. Place Clichy (talk) 08:59, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Support split, the current categories are trivial intersections of non-political occupations with political eras. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:49, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm confused. I thought that PROC = China; and RoC = Taiwan. Did something change? - jc37 23:46, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- My understanding is that the RoC categories refers to Republic of China (1912-1949), and the Taiwanese people categories are used for RoC post 1949. (If I'm misunderstanding, I'm happy to amend the split for RoC to also into 21st-century). Mason (talk) 00:50, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm no expert, but when I click on Republic of China, it redirects to Taiwan.
- That aside, for other categories where dates are involved, aren't the dates used as a parenthetical dab? - jc37 07:04, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- The Republic of China categories only contain people who were (also) active in the first half of the 20th century. I think it is odd that Republic of China redirects to Taiwan. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:16, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Well, I found Wikipedia:Category_names#How_to_name_the_country. Which apparently indicates that we're talking about WP:COMMONNAME. And also links to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Chinese)#Political NPOV. But that subsection was apparently under discussion and heavily edited back in 2012, with the section moved to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Chinese)/Taiwan, in this edit.
- As of right now, Republic of China is the official name of Taiwan. And on Wikipedia, we've apparently had consensus determine that Taiwan is the commonname for the ROC. See also: Political status of Taiwan. And noting that Taiwan is listed on Wikipedia:List of controversial issues and Category:Wikipedia controversial topics
- So with all that in mind, categorising pre-1949 China as the ROC would seem to be very problematic, without some sort of dab phrase/parenthetical. - jc37 01:15, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- The issue becomes moot when we are splitting the pre-1949 ROC categories, as nominated. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:59, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Just for example, post-1949 is still part of the 20th century. To "moot" this, maybe we need to not categorise these by century. - jc37 21:06, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Support all per nom. Ridiculous overcategorisation. But make sure none of those in the Republic of China categories are actually Taiwanese. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:47, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Yes. If this goes through, it would need to be a selective merge to prevent Taiwan-related articles from being mis-categorised. - jc37 21:06, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

- Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:OCEPON, the category only contains the eponymous article and a subcategory. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:36, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Oppose. This category includes a subcategory about her generals. Because the category doesn't cover exactly the same topic, it isn't eponymous. See this text from WP:OCEPON
A category that covers exactly the same topic as an article is known as the eponymous category for that article (e.g. New York City and Category:New York City; Mekong and Category:Mekong River; Abraham Lincoln and Category:Abraham Lincoln ). Eponymous categories should not be created unless enough directly-related articles or sub-categories exist. However, this should not be done simply to reduce the number of categories displayed in an article.

- Nominator's rationale: Trivial intersection that's non-defining. that feels pretty self-promotey. Do we have WordPresss bloggers? Mason (talk) 14:29, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- I've never heard of Wattpad before, but it seems to have been (be?) a platform not just a software and almost a genre. This is more like "Instagram poets" as a recognizable thing than "WordPress bloggers". Looking at the articles fo these writers, they do seem to have been famous for their writings on Wattpad as Wattpad. Jahaza (talk) 18:58, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Religious leaders of ancient Rome
- Nominator's rationale: Some of these should be children of Category: Religious leaders by country and others in Category: Religious leaders by nationality Mason (talk) 17:50, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Oppose, splitting between country and nationality is usually undesirable and even more so in a period when the concept of nationality did not even exist. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:33, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose it would be very difficult to divide the individual entries up this way. 22:15, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
Category:Latin historians
- Nominator's rationale: It's vague and doesn't match the latin language naming convention. (I'd also be ok with Historians in Latin, although it is clunky) Mason (talk) 22:14, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Alt rename to Category:Latin-language historians from the Roman Empire to match Category:Greek-language historians from the Roman Empire. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:19, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- support. It technically narrows the category, but practically, it won't change the memebership. Mason (talk) 20:27, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Support the original proposal, Oppose the alt (which would expel Sallust, Frugi, Cato the Elder, Hemina, Alimentus, Quadrigarius, Coelius Antipater, the Annalists...} Furius (talk) 20:18, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- @Furius: about the alternative, you raise a good point that some of these people lived during the Roman Republic instead of the Empire. However, the same can be said about philosophers in Category:Greek-language historians from the Roman Empire! So can't we rename them both categories to e.g. "in the Roman era"? Marcocapelle (talk) 06:29, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Thinking out loud here: "Roman-era" is ok in the context of Greek material, although a bit vague, but "Roman-era Latin historians" would be a concept of our own invention. The Greek historians category claims that it covers "Greek historians who lived during the era of the Roman Empire (27 BC - 1453 AD)," but it does include some earlier figures for some reason, even though its tree includes the "Hellenistic era" (I'm inclined to transfer the pre-27 BC Greek historians thither).
- Latin historians don't have a tree at all, but there are certainly enough authors to justify one. So, we could have, perhaps, "Category:Latin-language historians" containing "Category:Latin-language historians from the Roman Republic," "Category:Latin-language historians from the Roman Empire," and perhaps another for the Middle Ages to cover Paul the Deacon etc. The former would parallel "Category:Hellenistic-era historians" and would be useful, since these authors are a distinct category, often studied and discussed separately. - Propose renaming Category:German emigrants to the Netherlands (post-1990) to Category:Emigrants from reunified Germany to the Netherlands
- Nominator's rationale: I really don't find this intersecting categorization helpful. My preference is to up merge it into German emigrants. However, if it is to stay... an alternative renaming reunified is less clunky, and might look less terrible for the child categories that are currently named "German emigrants to the United States (post-1990)" Mason (talk) 02:22, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Merge to Category:German emigrants etc. For emigration it does not matter whether Germany was unified or reunified. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:54, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Agree. I feel the same for most of the emigration categories (although there are exceptions, if the reason for emigration is specific to the origin country. I'm thinking like, nazi germany, soviet union etc.) Mason (talk) 13:06, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
