Neranei (talk · contribs) - is brought to your consideration by:

Acalamari: To the community, I give you Neranei as a candidate for adminship.

Neranei has been editing Wikipedia since April of 2007. From then until now, she has amassed over 8,700 edits, with roughly 4,000 of them being in the mainspace. However, to avoid edit-counting, I should note that that Neranei is a quality editor, greatly improving articles such as Adam Clayton, List of U2 awards, U2 discography, and Where the Streets Have No Name. She has also gone on to create articles such as Iquito, Nafusi language, and also created an off-shoot, Where the Streets Have No Name (Pet Shop Boys song).
With other work, Neranei is an efficient vandal-fighter, and has given accurate reports to AIV. She has also edited portals and templates, therefore improving some of them, and has over 600 edits to the Wikipedia-namespace and has edited a variety of pages in that area, such as AIV, the Help Desk, and even account creation.
Back in July, Neranei had her first RfA, Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Neranei, which I supported. No major concerns came up in that RfA: most people who opposed felt that she was a little too new, and needed more experience. I believe that Neranei has addressed these concerns that were risen in that RfA.
Overall, Neranei is a decent, hardworking editor who is very civil, caring, and has a good personality. I believe that she will use the tools to her greatest ability, and Wikipedia will benefit from her being a sysop. Acalamari 19:06, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dihydrogen Monoxide:

Nera has scaled these city walls since her last RfA. She has worked incredibly hard in various areas of the project, and I experienced this first hand as her admin coach. She has, in my opinion, addressed the issues raised previously in an exemplary manor, as is shown on her coaching page.
The focus of Nera’s work is on improving U2 related articles. And let’s face it, who doesn’t like U2? She has improved three articles too good article status through her work there, and I have worked extensively with her in copyediting and other such areas. I can testify that she is an extremely co-operative editor, and that she is an excellent communicator. I am certain these skills will serve her well as an administrator.
Nera also does a lot of work around account requests, vandalfighting, and deletion debates. In all three areas, the administrator tools would be beneficial in allowing her to further serve the project. I am sure Nera will know her limits, and will step away and ask for help in cases where she isn’t sure of what to do.
Whilst (hopefully!) Nera can live with or without the mop and bucket, I think it’s safe to say that there are only benefits in granting them to her. Especially with anonymous page creation, we need as many excellent admins as we can get, who are willing to clean up the junk in far off areas of the project, where the streets have no name. When Nera gets the tools, it will be a beautiful day. Don’t let it get away. — H2O —  08:12, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
All lame U2 puns are copyrighted under the Dihydrogen Monoxide Not-so-free documentation license. Don’t even THINK about stealing them!

Húsönd:

I am honored to write a nomination for Neranei, a great user whom I am certain will step up her already superb job if given access to the admin tools. Neranei paid due attention to all the concerns raised at her last RFA. I opposed her that time, and I must say I couldn't be more satisfied with this turnabout. She has worked hard to attain the experience needed for the administrative responsibilities. Many vandals were fought, articles were brought forth. I've contributed to her admin coaching program and recently tested her with a few questions containing several traps most coachees seem to fall for. But in the end I was outsmarted miserably as Neranei managed to dodge them all, thus demonstrating her full preparedness. Above all, Neranei is unquestionably a very friendly, communicative and trustworthy user. Will go the extra mile to be nice and help whomever should be in need of assistance. She even has cockroaches as pets as I do, which means she is obviously an outstanding person even in real life (well, she might also have a considerable lack of friends, but that's an unimportant detail). :-) Now seriously, I think that Neranei is an excellent candidate and I ask my fellow Wikipedians to give her the support she truly deserves. The tools will be in very good hands. Húsönd 19:31, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here:

Accepted, with honor. Neranei (talk) 19:04, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Questions for the candidate[edit]

Dear candidate, thank you for offering to serve Wikipedia as an administrator. It is recommended that you answer these optional questions to provide guidance for participants:

1. What admin work do you intend to take part in?
A: There are several areas that I intend to work in. First and foremost is anti-vandalism efforts. I work in Recent Changes patrol quite a lot, and consider myself quite familiar with WP:AIV, and have made dozens of reports there. Over the past few months, I've learned quite a lot about Recent Changes patrol, and have made mistakes in the process of learning. I feel that as there are humans reverting vandalism, it is perfectly plausible for a human to mess up, and it is acceptable as long as they accept responsibility and fix whatever they screwed up. For example, a couple of weeks ago, I was patrolling, and someone mistakenly reverted, and I reverted to a vandal's version, and this had been going on for quite some time. The user came to me and asked what happened, I explained civilly, and reverted the page back to the last good version. There have been only a few other times that I have screwed up, but I feel that it has been an important part of the learning process, which will help me be a good admin. Therefore, I plan to spend a lot of time at AIV. Another area that I plan to spend time in is WP:CSD. It is often backlogged horribly, and I have had some experience in new page patrolling, and feel that I know my way around the CSD criteria enough to perform the job with the best possible judgment and discretion. However, I haven't had as much experience as some other users, so I will take it slow in the beginning and exercise discretion when deleting and not be afraid to ask more experienced admins for help if necessary. I feel it is better to be slightly embarrassed when asking for help and doing something right than to be gung-ho about something, screwing up, and having to face the music for your hubris. Another area that I foresee myself spending time in is WP:XFD. I do not have huge amounts of experience there, and definitely will take it slow there as well, most likely beginning with unanimous "delete" or "keep" decisions. My specialty is music, so I anticipate spending time in the music AFDs a bit. Again, as with CSD, I will not be afraid to ask for help if I am having trouble with determining consensus or another issue that may arise. The final area that I would participate in is WP:ACC. I have spent some time there creating uncontroversial accounts, and feel comfortable enough with the process to create accounts as an administrator.
2. What are your best contributions to Wikipedia, and why?
A: For a lot of my time here on Wikipedia, I've been a Wikignome. I've done RC patrol, I've corrected typos, and done some work with stubs. However, in June, I became involved in a great Wikiproject, WikiProject U2 (I was actually planning to start it, but things happened, and I never actually got around to it.) I did the content for the U2 Portal for it, and, after some help from User:Merbabu, got it running. User:Smithcool(the founder) and I have been running the Collaboration of the Fortnight (which is currently inactive because there is very little participation), and I have done some work on the monthly newsletters, some of which can be found here. I also feel that my article writing work for that project has been my best writing work so far. For this project, I have written 3 GAs, one Featured List, and one former FLC, the GAs being Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. (two band members), and "Where the Streets Have No Name" (a famous U2 song). I contribute so much to this area because I feel that it is alright to specialize in something like a band, or a country, especially if you have a passion for it, because writing those articles will not seem like a chore, and you will enjoy your research more. Also in the category of article writing, I have written several stubs on endangered languages, a topic I am fascinated with, and Catholic saints (for no particular reason.) I also feel that this is an appropriate area to discuss some admin-area related screw ups that I have made. On one occasion, I did not pay attention to dates on warnings given to an IP, and mistakenly reported someone for what could have been a first violation. I believe that I dealt with the situation civilly, and the user who notified me, User:Jmlk17 was extremely civil and uninflammatory. The second issue I feel like I should mention is a series of not necessarily blatant usernames reported to WP:UAA. I was much too overzealous in reporting, and don't feel comfortable enough with the criteria to spend time there if I'm made an administrator. If I do sometime down the road (probably really far down the road, most likely not al all) and I misjudge a username, please call me on it. Other than those two incidents, I feel proud of my Recent Changes Patrol work. The last thing I'd like to mention is the fact that I have written one article for the Wikipedia Signpost, which can be found here.

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or have other users caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A: I, over my months as an editor here, have been in a few conflicts worthy of mention, though I feel they were pretty minor, compared to some other users. The first one of these was a mediation cabal case that involved the article The History Channel. I became involved in the case by reverting what looked like simple POV-pushing by an anonymous editor. I feel that I handled myself well during the case, and stayed cool through the whole process. I have also mediated a case informally, which effectively died when one side of the debate was blocked for sockpuppetry and trolling, among other things. Other than that, the only other conflicts I've been involved in were with pissed off vandals replacing my userpage with vulgar messages and other such immaturity.
4 Optional question from SJP
If a new user came to you and asked you "What is the meaning of the policy ignore all rules?" How would you answer the new user? Thanks for your time
A:I would, of course, direct them to the policy page (WP:IAR), and explain that one should follow the spirit of policy, not the letter, when the encyclopedia would suffer if policy were followed to the letter. Basically, if it would be detrimental to Wikipedia to follow a rule, ignore it. I would also explain that no, that does not mean to go vandalizing because you think it is helpful in some way. I hope this answer is satisfactory. Regards, Neranei (talk) 13:21, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Question 4 Follow up Are you able to give an example when you would apply IAR? If not, it is not a big deal. Sometimes it is hard to think of an example:) Thanks for your time.
AI can't think of one at the moment, but I will try to get back to you on this, alright? I'm very sorry. Regards, Neranei (talk) 23:26, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
5. You see that another administrator has blocked an editor and you disagree with the block. What is the policy about unblocking and do you intend to adhere to it?--MONGO 16:38, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A: If I disagree with the block, I would talk to the blocking admin, and hopefully have a discussion about it, and determine the best course of action. An admin should not undo another's without asking and discussing. It would be foolish hubris to engage in a dispute that can be averted with discussion, in my opinion. As for unblocking, the policy (WP:BLOCK) says that an admin should not unblock a user without discussing it with the blocking admin. However, if the admin has left or is not around, it should be taken to WP:AN or WP:AN/I. Of course, if it is an obviously mistaken block (one example would be misspelling the username), unblocking without discussion may be acceptable. I of course intend to adhere to this policy. Regards, Neranei (talk) 23:26, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  64. Strong Support I have had the great honor of knowing Neranei for a while now, and she is just a wonderful editor, and a kind, supportive person with an excellent sense of humor. Acalamari is an administrator I also know quite well, and I know that he would not nominate someone without a thorough look into their editing history, and full confidence in their abilities. Neranei has offered on numerous occasions to assist me on any projects I may need a hand with, and she's always done so with an enthusiasm that is infectious. I've never once seen her respond to issues with anything but a calm manner, and a kind word. Her answers to the questions posed here are excellent, especially her response to question 5. As to the note below about her age, I will point out we have a number of very young (under 16) administrators, who are absolutely excellent in their roles. I don't think age is an issue with Neranei, there are a great number of very mature young editors, and I think it could safely be said there are some older editors who may not always act in a mature manner. Neranei is one of the most mature people I've ever run into, and I think a recent issue she was involved with, regarding a user claiming to be an administrator here, illustrates this absolutely perfectly: She noticed the editor had redirected Tube Steak from the current redirect to Hot dog, to Penis, and she did what anyone would have done, reverted and left a level one notice [1]. As illustrated in the conversation here, the editor claimed to be an administrator, said that the redirect was valid, and told her to leave it alone. She asked the editor on his talk page to let her know who his administrative account was, and if he did not wish to do so on the talk page, to please email her so that it could be cleared up. The editor was not very receptive, and responded rather abruptly, to which Neranei continued to discuss the issue in an extremely calm, pleasant manner. When the editor continued to insist he didn't need to disclose his identity to her unless she was an administrator, calling her a "civilian", and claiming that his reliable source was Urbandictionary.com. When he indicated he had no more interest in discussing the issue with her, she rightly took the issue to AN/I to ask for other opinions [2], and left the editor a very nice note to let him know that's what she did. It was determined that the editor was impersonating an administrator, as illustrated by their userpage [3], onto which they copied User:Alex_Bakharev's userboxes. The editor was blocked, and the issue resolved quickly. Neranei's actions are above reproach, following guidelines and policy, while remaining extremely civil and kind throughout the entire exchange, illustrating a firm grasp of policy and procedure, as well as the maturity that is needed for administrators in conflict situations. Such an editor is truly valuable, and I firmly believe that she will make an excellent addition to the current administrative team. ArielGold 00:48, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  79. Strong support this candidate has shown herself to be wiser and more grounded than other editors two or even three times her age. Her availability and commitment to the project also seem more than up to par. She is a definite asset to Wikipedia. Allez les Bleus!--Ramdrake 00:59, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  80. Support - has always seemed very calm and reasonable when I've come across her. Has plenty of relevant experience. WjBscribe 01:03, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  81. Support - will make an excellent administrator. - BANG! 01:16, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  82. Support - Why the heck not? Always thought Neranei's actions where civil. --Tadayuki 紅葉 03:49, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  83. Support - my only concern is... I thought you were a dude? Guess not. Just messing with you. I'm sure you'll make a superb admin. I think you need to familiarise yourself a little more with code and such, but that's hardly an area of concern, as you're resourceful enough that you know who to contact when the $hit hits the fan. --lincalinca 09:25, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  86. Support you've achieved a real lot in your time here. Well done, Lradrama 18:41, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  87. Support. I've had a (small) amount of contact with this user on Wikipedia, and have found her to be courteous, rational, polite, and pleasant to work with. Having reviewed some of her contributions, her conduct in general seems equally impressive. I'm confident that she'll make a good admin. Jakew 22:14, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  88. Support A great contributor. I think that the words of the other supporters of this RfA, especially ArielGold, have put my support into words better than I could :) ( arky ) 02:32, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose[edit]
  1. mild opposeThis editor recently added the WPMILHIST tag to .50 Action Express [4]. IMO this was an incorrect tag because: 1) There is no record of any military usage of this firearms cartridge and 2) this tag has been added/removed twice already. No big deal, I've added my share of incorrect tags. ;-) However, I was surprised by the response,[5] which seems to show an incorrect reading of the guideline as I see it.[6] Again, not a big deal for an editor, we all make mistakes and the more bold you are or the more you contribute, the more frequently you're likely to make a small misstep. However I'd be somewhat concerned about an admin who couldn't get the basics of a project guideline. Arthur 03:02, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly had no idea that the tag had been removed/added multiple times before, and I honestly misinterpreted the guideline. Thank you for alerting me to my error; I am very new to the military history project, and am thus not very familiar with the guidelines. If there was any misunderstanding, I'm very sorry, and hope that it will not happen again; if you notice me screwing up, please tell me and I can try to rectify the situation. Thank you for your opinion! Regards, Neranei (talk) 03:07, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. I don't care if you're 13 or 113, I'm glad to have supported this nom, for an editor that demonstrates this type of humility in the face of correction by another. K. Scott Bailey 03:13, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
eh, I don't know about a 113-year-old. They can't even drive safely anymore, I wouldn't trust them, :p Although I would love to talk with them and listen to their stories. :) ~Jeeny (talk) 05:27, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Neutral[edit]
  1. I normally think neutral "votes" are very silly. But, I cannot bring myself to support someone so young- it seems very unlikely to me that someone of that age could have reasonable adult judgement. However, I can't think of actual instances of poor judgment I've seen from her, so I don't have much in the way of reasonable grounds to oppose either. Friday (talk) 00:33, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Friday! I understand an initial impression of age reflecting on maturity and judgment, but I'd urge you to read the incident I explain above in my support opinion, examine the diffs, and the way Neranei conducted herself when faced with a difficult situation, and I think you will find that she is an extremely mature and level-headed editor. Age is not always a determiner of maturity, as I think we all know :o) ArielGold 00:48, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I read about the tubesteak issue earlier today and reviewed the situation. Neranei was very reasonable and polite even when dealing with a problem editor. For further input, she very reasonably made a post to AN/I and explained the situation well. I know her only to be a good editor and I greatly appreciate the useful work she does here. Friday (talk) 00:53, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Hello Friday! I definitely understand the concern you're bringing to the table here. I know that many people my age, certainly most of those that I come into contact with on a daily basis do not have the maturity to deal with difficult, delicate situations. I would very much understand if you were to oppose based on your experience with teenagers, believe me, I know how immature that they can be. However, on occasion, people are mature beyond their years. To use an oft-cited example, Anonymous Dissident was 12 when his RfA passed, Ilyanep was 11 when he was sysopped, and just 14 when he became a bureaucrat, and neither of them has misused their tools, as far as I can tell, to cite some examples of mature, young Wikipedians. I must thank you for not opposing solely based upon my age, that was fair of you, and I respect your judgment and opinion that young users are not suitable for the mop. Thanks again for your opinion. Best regards, Neranei (talk) 00:58, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You better stop being so reasonable and calm or you might make me change my mind. Honestly, if you were around for another year or so and hadn't done anything screwy, I'd probably find myself supporting your RFA. I'm willing to be persuaded that someone quite young can be mature beyond their years. It happens sometimes. But we already have a lot of immature people (yes, of all ages, as correctly pointed out) running around too. So I like to be careful. The evidence I've seen of your maturity is good- I'd just want lots and lots of it, that's all. I'm willing to believe you're mature enough; I just don't know that yet from my own knowledge. In this case, it's all academic and you'll pass easily. And hey, if I have a beef with something you do one day, I'll bother you on your talk page about it, I promise. Keep up the good work, regardless of the RFA. Friday (talk) 01:06, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, reasonable and calm are my specialty. :) Again, I understand your desire to wait to see if I went crazy, as an adolescent, I know that many people my age are prone to mood swings and such, and could consequently snap at people or go on a rampage. My philosophy is that there are crazy people in every group and immature people of every age. And, if you ever question any action of mine whatsoever (this goes for absolutely anyone), come to me and we can work it out. I will, of course, always try to get issues worked out with the least amount of drama possible. Hopefully any problems will be worked out swiftly and amicably. Thank you again for your calm, reasoned opinion. Some would be likely to say "zOMG a teenage admin!111!! oh noes!!1!!" and then not offer any reasoning whatsoever. Best regards, Neranei (talk) 01:20, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, you are so correct! I'm the perfect example of an older person (and educated, believe it or not, I have degrees) with mood swings. I'm old yet young, happy yet sad, cool yet hot, funny yet cranky, nice but mean. :p I wish I were more like you. Love, ~Jeeny (talk) 08:22, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here's how I see it :) If a user is mature enough that you wouldn't be able to tell how young they are otherwise, then they have the right level of maturity for an administrator. Happy editing! ( arky ) 03:10, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
