@Spinningspark: That's fine too. I was hovering between the two, but I think since Jc37's remarks came so late, I think it's worth a relist. bibliomaniac15 18:41, 13 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I did something stupid a few years ago and didn't understand the consequences. I asked for help to create a page about something the police developed in the 1960s called Operation Identification. It's an important topic deserving of a place on Wikipedia. Category:African Americans shot dead by law enforcement officers in the United States[edit]

I'm a bit concerned about the result of this CfD. The discussion regrettably didn't pick up on the fact that not all the articles in the category are actually about African-American people: Amadou Diallo was from Guinea and only arrived in the U.S. in his 20s; Ousmane Zongo was Burkinabé; Abdul Razak Ali Artan was Somali; perhaps others besides. It's of course possible that these people considered themselves African-American, but ordinarily the term refers to people born in the U.S., naturalised citizens, and/or people who've lived there a long time. I'm not objecting to your close of course, which clearly reflected the consensus, but the WP:MR guidance is insistent that these things be discussed with the closer first, and as I don't usually pay much attention to CfD your thoughts on the best course would be appreciated. Thanks, – Arms & Hearts (talk) 16:28, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Arms & Hearts: Hey there, thanks for letting me know! This does seem like new information that wasn't discussed before, so I think that the best course of action would be to open up a new CFD, mentioning your rationale and the fact that you discussed this with me (so it isn't seen as a contentious reopening). If you want, I can also open up the CFD for you as a procedural matter. bibliomaniac15 18:24, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The category was a subcat of Category:African-American people and so the objection of Arms & Hearts applies to the placing Ousmane Zongo and Abdul Razak Ali Artan in this category under either name. An answer would be to create a parent such as Category:People of African descent shot dead by law enforcement officers in the United States, subcat of Category:People of African descent. (There is no Category:Black people: it was deleted at cfd in 2006.) Oculi (talk) 18:37, 17 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks both. Yes, Oculi, that does complicate things – although, to complicate things further, aren't the above-named people African people rather than people of African descent? (There may still be others who are African-Canadian, Black British etc. though.) I'll go ahead with the new CfD and try and summarise the issues. – Arms & Hearts (talk) 18:01, 18 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Just wondering if you missed the updated functions of JJMC89's bot for CFD. Try the Retain part of WP:CFDW; it even posts the Old CfD templates. We just have to follow the syntax requirements on that page. – Fayenatic London 22:45, 24 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Confused about CfD[edit]

I noticed that you closed this discussion as delete on Sep 11. But 12 days later, the category still seems to exist (although it is nominated for speedy deletion by JPxG). I'm unfamiliar with CfD, so this confuses me. I know that with AfDs, an article link becomes red pretty soon after the discussion is closed as "delete". Any insights would be appreciated, thanks VR talk 17:14, 23 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Candidates in Canadian elections[edit]

I wanted to ask you about your closure of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 November 2#Category:Christian Heritage Party of Canada candidates in the 1988 Canadian federal election, because you treated the two parent categories differently from each other on grounds where there wasn't actually a difference between them.

Specifically, you decided to keep Category:Christian Heritage Party of Canada candidates for the Canadian House of Commons on the grounds that it also had list overview articles like Christian Heritage Party of Canada candidates in the 1988 Canadian federal election — but if that's grounds for keeping that category, then Category:Co-operative Commonwealth Federation candidates for the Canadian House of Commons also has to be kept, because list overview articles like Co-operative Commonwealth Federation candidates in the 1940 Canadian federal election were present there too. So such lists can't be grounds for keeping one category but not the other, if both categories had them — either they both have to be kept on the grounds of the list articles that they both have, or they both have to be deleted regardless of the list articles. We can't treat them differently from each other on grounds that didn't actually make them any different from each other. Bearcat (talk) 18:45, 12 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Bearcat: Thanks for pointing that out. On further investigation, the problem actually seems to be that the Commonwealth Federation candidate overview articles were actually never placed in Category:Co-operative Commonwealth Federation candidates for the Canadian House of Commons; they are only categorized in the "Candidates in the XXXX Canadian federal election" category tree. By contrast, the Christian Heritage party articles are in both trees. Unfortunately, when I closed the CFD, I only noticed that the Commonwealth Federation category had non-overview articles in it, so I had listed it for deletion. I will restore it and populate it in a similar fashion to Category:Christian Heritage Party of Canada candidates for the Canadian House of Commons (which needs to be purged of non-overview articles anyway). bibliomaniac15 23:12, 12 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Dear Bibliomaniac15,

You're invited to a zoom call, taking place on February 11, with the goal of improving the article on Los Angeles to Featured article status! I often find it daunting to approach the Big Subjects on my own—so if you, like me, want a time to sit down with fellow dedicated editors and tackle something important and complex, this is the zoom for you! I, unfortunately, have no way to transmit snacks over zoom; but I trust you to exercise good judgement and discretion in selecting snacks of your own. Peer review request[edit]

Does "CVG", listed as one of the topics you deal with on the peer review volunteer list, stand for "computer video games"? I am asking because I would like to request feedback for a video game article that is on peer review. I would definitely appreciate it, for I have plans to nominate it for featured article candidacy. The game’s named Fallout, and the peer review can be accessed here. Of course, it is possible that CVG does not stand for computer video games. Don’t feel too inclined to provide feedback. New administrator activity requirement[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Komodo dragon[edit]

Hello, I was looking at the Komodo dragon article, which is at this point a very old FA. (It's currently on the list at URFA.) I was actually on the article looking for information about the distribution of the current population, and this feels an area that the article currently lacks. There's isolated notes about a couple of populations and the infobox map, but no section discussing it. A section covering this sort of info for example, would be great, incorporating perhaps that last current paragraph in the main Conservation section. Aside from that, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the quality of the article as it stands now, with relation to the FA criteria. There's some areas where the prose will need rewriting, but I am not sure if this is a large job or a small one. Thoughts welcome, and thank you of course for putting together this page back in the day. Best, CMD (talk) 08:10, 24 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for letting me know! I think the article definitely shows its age, and there have been several parts that have been added over time, especially with regards to newer developments about venom. If I'm being honest, I've been kind of anticipating an audit of the article these past few years. Unfortunately, my activity has been rather low these past months (and probably through June as well) because of busyness IRL, so I'm not sure how much bandwidth I'll have. But I'll see what I can do on my spare time. Thanks so much for letting me know. bibliomaniac15 03:37, 25 May 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Bibliomaniac15, I've had another look at this, and I'm afraid I've come to the conclusion that updating this article would be a large job, not a small one. I've added a summary of some issues on the article talkpage, and listed this as a formal URFA notification. Generally this leads to a formal review after two to three weeks if there is no action, but the timeframe isn't that important so let me know if it's something you would have time to work on. I actually wish I had time to work on this topic myself, but sadly I am also quite busy irl and already have a backlog of wiki to do items that I am not getting to. CMD (talk) 12:49, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. I will be out of town this coming week with little Internet access so I won't be on Wikipedia at all. On the side, I've been compiling some research but it has been a long time since I've really touched the article too. Thanks so much for your review. I'll take a closer look when I get back. bibliomaniac15 17:08, 24 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Need help from Italy - please[edit]

Sorry to disturb you but i need some help. I'm a non registered user writing from Italy. I don't know if you can help me but i hope that you can check if there's some mischievous activity going on on the italian wiki. The situation that i'm going to explain in a few lines is really quite strange. Strange to the point that an administrator user back in Italy is protecting or somehow allowing a set of "harmful" actions by a group of users.

A month ago i tried to correct some data on a page on wikipedia italy. The data that i corrected consisted of readily verifiable facts that could not result unknown to someone that has a knowledge of the argument described in the relative voice. The page that i tried to contribute to is just the page of "Scuderia Ferrari", a simple sport, historical page, not a big deal, at lest in my mind. So i expected everything to run smoothly. I was utterly wrong. I found myself in a subsequent series of "Godfather movie" situations.

A group of users, aided by some privileged ones, are modyfying the chronology of the page (at the code level) and de facto cancel every contribution (both at the page level, at the discussion level and are even able to erase themselves out of the chronology of the modifcations when they put out offensive remarks or make some other mischief). This is an inexplicably childish behaviour that acts against everything wikipedia should be, an open contribution tool that with cooperation tools aids the users to better the quality of the free hypertext. What i'm finding particularly wrong is the erase process of the discussion page. I had spent some time to put on the page all the things that could help in reaching an informed consensus about the subject ( corroborating facts, a set of bibliographical references, a set of questions that could allow the users to share their knowledge on the subject and focus on the key points in order to clear the argument). If one, in addition to rapid, vaguely justified if justified at all, rollback actions, cancels the chronolgy it becomes impossible even for future users to check the facts and take part in the discussion.

Wiki is a wonderfull instrument but, if you give it to the wrong people or if the wrong people have too much power, it becomes useless.

I tried to contact you, as an outside user administrator, because i hope that you could check what i say in an independent, maybe anonymous way, with a level of competency that is higher than the mere "edit war" conflict.

Thank you Alberto

P.S. I'll try also to make these things known to a random user administrator in Italy and hope for the best 151.68.183.39 (talk) 11:28, 4 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ambassador of Chinese request[edit]

Hi. I noticed you are an ambassador for the Chinese language. I was wondering if you could add a sound file with the pronunciation of the Chinese language name in Chinese in the linked relevant page. Here is an example in the Swedish language page. Even though it is one of the most spoken languages in the world, in English few people know how it is called and pronounced in Chinese. It would be a great addition. Cheers! Thinker78 (talk) 22:00, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thriller drama cat[edit]

Quick question about manually re-organizing the thriller drama category. (as discussed here). I've started slowly going through some of the categories just making sure the genres match prose in the articles and doing some mild cleaning here and there. Is the best way to do it do you think? I haven't done any category organizing in a while. Andrzejbanas (talk) 01:49, 24 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

bot-related nonsense
MALABO, Equatorial Guinea, June 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Republic of Equatorial Guinea recently added the French language to the official government's website. The government's portal can now be accessed in Spanish, English and French, which is the country's second official language. This is an effort by the government to improve its communications, add to the resources offered by the country, and increase its information delivery for the 17th African Union Summit taking place in Malabo June 23-July 1 with the theme "Accelerating Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development." बॉट (talk) 06:31, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I apologize for my previous wrong response. Upon closer examination, I see that the IPs in question are IPv6 addresses. IPv6 is the latest version of the Internet Protocol (IP), which is used to connect devices on a network. 240F:31:3402:1:D9:3326:4F37:89A1 बॉट (talk) 08:51, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion Request[edit]

Hello! I am a Wikipedia IP editor and I wanted to draw your attention to the page which I came across "Qatari support for Hamas" is containing libelous material as the content of the page already exists on multiple different pages like "Hamas" and "2023 Israel–Hamas war". The page contains defamatory statement concerning the party involved. As per my knowledge It is a Wikipedia policy to immediately delete libelous material when it has been identified. Page revisions containing libelous content should also be removed from the page history. Libelous material (otherwise known as defamation) is reasonably likely to damage a person or company's reputation and could expose Wikipedia to legal consequences.

It is an extended protected page and I am an IP user, I hope you will attend my request. Thank you! 37.252.191.68 (talk) 05:41, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi there, if you have a specific edit request for that page, you're going to want to post on the talk page at Talk:Qatari support for Hamas instead of here. bibliomaniac15 20:04, 15 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
