Adding "gate" to any controversy is considered very trite, somewhat ridiculous, and is discouraged by news sources widely except for partisans of any type, and encyclopedia style is less loosey-goosey than even that. I am unsure how many Wikipedia articles use this as a title; few, I hope! I will change it soon; I had hoped for more comment but so far it's 2:1 in favor. It is used by some outlets, but rarely in mainstream news. Most instances I have found surround it in scare quotes or make fun of it. Hillary Clinton in her campaign and included in this article, made comments about the emails to be turned over to the State Department and about the emails since deleted. The State Department also "classified" some of the emails prior to public release. If you have any ideas to expand and improve this article please be BOLD and add them. Both of you clearly have very strong opinions on the topic. I'd like to remind you both that WP:TALKDONTREVERT is policy and so is WP:CIVIL. Characterizations that JR is trying to turn this into a hit piece are unfounded as are the allegations that Tarc's reverts constitute vandalism. I don't think that the word controversy implies negative criticism. It states that there is a disagreement (i.e., a controversy). A disagreement or a controversy always, by definition, has two sides. Furthermore, even if we were to assume that following WP:CRITS is required, the essay itself has the following to say regarding article titles containing "controversy":

[Use] the term "controversy" in an article title only when this is part of the common name of the topic of that article, and the controversy is notable in its own right (as opposed to being part of a larger topic)[.]

It isn't the use of the private email server that is controversial. The political storm that followed is what created a controversy, because of how it was linked to the Republican's Benghazi obsession. The main difference being, those other articles are probably not currently in the news. Therefore, the articles receive much less traffic. And, hence, any individual edit or move (or rename) has a good chance of going unnoticed, when it otherwise would not be. Generally not. Occasionally, people go a little overboard with articles that are edge cases or articles that are about controversies. The move of Bush White House email controversy to Bush White House email system implicates the exact same issue as this article. That, and the move of Code name Geronimo controversy to Choice of code name Geronimo could also be disputed, because the only significance of the choice of the name is the controversy that arose over it. The move of Dismissal of U.S. attorneys controversy to Dismissal of U.S. attorneys in 2006 is more solid in my opinion because that was a notable event in the Presidency of George W Bush, irrespective of whether anybody considered it a controversy. I can't say that most editors would agree with me here, only that there could be some reasonable debate over whether the first two of those articles should be moved. However, I don't think BRD requires editors to avoid any edit that anybody could possibly disagree with. If an article is quiet with few editors or disputes, uncontroversial, and it's not part of a mass edit of dozens or hundreds of articles at the same time, then I think it's just fine to be bold and change the article name. Frankly, the only reason why most people care about this article is that it's very current in the news and a lot of people have been editing it. It is considered unhelpful in more or less any process discussion on Wikipedia (and possibly unwise in real life too). Part of the issue is that most people aren't following the discussion in real time, they read an existing discussion from start to finish. If every other comment is a rebuttal from a single editor, the whole thing because tedious. For what it's worth, it doesn't seem out of hand here, I read this whole discussion without particularly noticing it. The worst seem to be deletion discussions, where the nominator feels like they have to counter every point made. Titles are determined by a combination of style guidelines and editorial discretion, not weight of the sources. We could use sources to establish that a controversy exists/existed, or that the controversial aspect of an event is a primary part of its notability, but that would be from the body of a source, not its title or headline. Headlines tend to be inserted at the last minute (and changed from one edition to the next) by section editors, not journalists, and their purpose is to grab user attention, not to communicate the substance of the story. - Wikidemon (talk) 22:17, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I hate to make extra work for you there, but yes, finding that the body of the article supports describing the phenomenon as a controversy would be more convincing than citing headlines. Headlines are all over the map with news publications. Just surveying the front page of the online Washington Post right now, I see headlines like "The burning of America’s black churches" and "Tiny house, big benefits: Freedom from a mortgage — and stuff". I don't think anyone would argue that these are good cues that we should title the encyclopedia articles accordingly. I do agree that from what I've read to date, it is reasonable to include 'controversy' in the article title, mostly because that's what the article is about and that reflects the primary reason for the subject's notability, both of which do come from sources. - Wikidemon (talk) 00:17, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Other title ideas

The facts are these:

  1. Hillary Clinton used a private email server whilst Secretary of State.
  2. This was unusual, but legal.
  3. Political opponents are trying to use this to score political points.

We need a title that reflects these facts, but does not fall into the non-neutral trap of using opposition and media hyperbole. These are my ideas:

Further discussion

Best practice at Wikipedia is to exclude the word "controversy" from article titles except when it has become part of the common name for the event, such as the antinomian controversy. Best practice is described at WP:CRITS, although that practice is admittedly often not followed (see WP:Other crap exists), especially for articles that pre-date the pertinent portion of WP:CRITS.

Deleting "controversy" from an article title is not a denial of controversy, just like not putting "State Department" in this article title is not necessarily a denial that emails involved the State Department. Excluding "controversy" from the title is just a recognition that the article covers other stuff besides controversy, including stuff that has derivative notability because of the controversy.

This Wikipedia article includes much information that is not controversial at all, such as when and where the server was installed, even though it became notable because of controversy. The reason for keeping "controversy" out of this article title is merely a special case of the more general rule that titles should be precise enough to unambiguously define the topical scope of the article, but no more precise than that. See WP:Precision. In this case, a title like "Private email server of Secretary Clinton" would be precise enough, and the word "controversy" does not remove any ambiguity, and instead confines the scope too narrowly.

If Lincoln had no career in politics, then we would have no Wikipedia article about him, but still we have an article titled simply Abraham Lincoln. The Empire State Building is notable because of its height, just like this article is notable because of controversy, but we do not put height in that article title; there would be no Wikipedia article about the Empire State Building if it were two stories high. Consider yet another example: Kirk Douglas is notable because of his movie stardom, just like this article is notable because of controversy, but neither of these reasons for notability belong in the article titles.Anythingyouwant (talk) 17:06, 7 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The following RS's (The Washington Post, The New York Times, CBS News, NBC News, ABC News, MSNBC, CNN, Reuters, and so forth, ad nauseum) can – and do – label this a "controversy". But some liberal leaning, white-washing editor (translation: Democrat and Clinton supporter) is "offended" by the word "controversy", so that one Wikipedia editor trumps all of those RS's. LOL. Your position is simply ridiculous. You are suggesting that if something is a "controversy" (or a scandal) that we don't have to call it as such (even if there are a million RS's that do). I am objecting to your addition of that unnecessary "This was called a controversy by so-and-so source 1 and so-and-so source 2" sentence, which was clearly added in response to the above RM. I would not object to you including something such as "Clinton's email use was subject to considerable controversy" with the sources you cited in a section about the media's reaction. I am objecting to the specific instance of how you used those sources. Well, then, I am totally confused. Or you and I are not talking about the same thing. I added that info in. (The information being: "This incident has been referred to as a controversy and/or a scandal by The New York Times and The Washington Post, etc.") It was not moved to a different section. It was deleted (i.e., excised altogether). I don't know if it was by you or which specific editor. And I am not inclined to go look through the maze of edits in the history. But, if the material is suitable for the article, is the better solution to: (A) delete the material altogether? or (B) move it to a more suitable section? Republicans are using an unusual (and legal) email use as a way to attack Hillary Clinton, who will likely stand in the way of a Republican presidency. In an atrocious abuse of power, they are using taxpayer money to finance endless (and pointless) hearings on Benghazi, and now they have a new chew toy to play with. If there is anything controversial, it is that abuse of taxpayer money. I am saying that the only notable thing about her emails is the the political circus surounding emails from the period while she was Secretary of State that were used for official purposes. Her non-official emails are not pertainent nor notable, emails from outside of this period are neither relevant nor notable. Server location

I've edited out some improbable claims that suggest that Clinton owned an email server that was located in her home. Although technically feasible, for the last 10-15 years almost nobody has placed an actual server in their home.

Reviewing the sources in the article, and searching on the web, I have (so far) found none to say that the server was physically located in her house. None of the citations I reviewed next to the claims in the article said that the computers were physically in her house, though some were obviously confused or contradictory about what that means, or what a server is, or what it means to register a domain name. For example, a claim that a server or domain is "registered to" her address does not at all imply that there is something physically present at her address, it is just a contact address listed on account registration. There does seem to be support that she / her staff were running a "home brew" email email server,[6] meaning that they were at least running a private instance of the email server software. However, it is not really clear whether they were also running the server itself, and where that server was located — in a leased server farm, a virtual cloud server, or indeed a computer sitting in a rack somewhere in her house.

Clinton told the House Committee (who apparently believes the server is in her house in New York, as they have threatened to subpoena it) that it was secure and safe vis-a-vis any sensitive or classified material, as her husband's Secret Service detail was guarding it -- a rather naive claim showing little understanding of cyberspace, but indeed suggesting that it is, in fact, sitting there in her house. Do you have a link to the transcript or is it somewhere on that file page? Her testimony is not a secondary source, but it would help confirm whether those secondary sources are in fact reporting it correctly (it's using primary sources to falsify other sources as a matter of editorial discretion, which is reasonable, not for WP:V purposes). The confusion people are having with what it means for a server to be somewhere is exactly why it would help find a credible source, in this case not just a reliable one but one that seems to know what it's talking about. Given all the fuss about how insecure the emails were, the implications of her keeping a physical server in her house would indeed be something that a credible tech / IT security publication would be most interested in. Even in 2015 there's a general ignorance in the media of how "cyberspace" (shudder) actually functions. I'd be jaw-on-the-floor surprised if the server turned out to be physically located n the Clintons' home, what some in the media went off on was the registration of an IP address to "Eric Hoteham", with the registrant address listed as the home address. I agree with everything that you say. However, if it is called a "controversy" by nearly all of the reliable sources, why can we not call it a controversy? Just because the Clinton advocates are making a big fuss over this? Which, by the way, is very NPOV. I think that the myriad of reliable sources should trump the biased editors. No? That is exactly why we use reliable sources. And not editors who are biased. What am I missing here? That anyone can claim this is not a controversy is simply baffling.
