Thanks for your note on this article, it is good to question everything that doesn't look right. I actually personally know the author of this book and he is pretty reliable, although in this case I agree that he may have got the model number wrong. Here is an exact quote of what that section says:

I think we need to confirm some other refs and see what they say. This forum which quotes Cicare seems to think it was the CH-6, so I suspect that Armstrong lost the "H" there somewhere. Thanks for your careful editing. I sometimes forget to use em dashs instead of "--" and so forth. A couple of questions, though. You added two blank lines between the Categories and the stub tags on Perkins Island Light. Since the stub tags set at the bottom of the page, the effect of this was to insert two blanks lines between the NRHP box and the two stub tags. My theory has been to set these tight to minimize the use of screen real estate for items which are auxiliary to the main article. Is the extra space Wiki policy?

Also, at Doubling Point Light, you changed the NRHP infobox from "COAST GUARD" to "U.S. Coast Guard". I agree that the latter is preferable, but it has been my habit to leave the NRHP infobox as the Elkman tool creates it -- with all of the fields filled out as they appear on NRIS. This appears to be the policy of the NRHP Project group as well. Thus the NRHP infobx title for the Doubling Point Range Lights is "Kennebec River Light Station" because that is the NRIS name, even though the Coast Guard and everybody else calls it by the article name. I noticed that you changed the reflist on this article from two column to one with the note "2-column mode unusable". I am just wondering if you are using Google Chrome for a browser (as I am)? In Chrome the two column mode just shows up as a single column on all articles where ((reflist|2)) or greater is used. However it still seems to work fine on other browsers, such as Firefox and Epiphany. It seems that Chrome doesn't like the coding for the pages, as it is a very strict browser.

Regarding your well-intentioned edits to the Main sequence article, I would just like to mention a couple of things. First, per WP:EMDASH, either unspaced em-dashes or spaced en-dashes can be used. However, one style should be used consistently throughout an article. If an article is consistent in its usage, it is unnecessary to switch from one style to another, and doing so may be considered bad form. Public polling does not, and never correctly has determined scientific consensus, and it adds no support to your argument. That being said, you provide no evidence for your statistic, and I therefore have no reason to believe it.

For what it's worth, a Gallup poll from March of this year (after the Climategate debacle) shows clearly that more Americans believe climate change is mostly caused by humans than that it is not [March 11, 2010, The Gallup Organization: "Americans Divided on Causes of Global Warming", "[D]o you believe increases in the Earth's temperature over the last century are due more to -- the effects of pollution from human activities [50%] (or) natural changes in the environment that are not due to human activities [46%]". Americans clearly view the threat as exaggerated, which is shown on the same link, but more still attribute it to human activities.

Climate change may or may not be anthropogenic, but the overwhelming majority of scientific consensus agrees that it is anthropogenic. The article I linked to is titled List of scientists opposing the mainstream scientific assessment of global warming. I did not name that article nor was involved with its creation; if you have a problem with that take it up with those who did.

Further, the correction I made was removing the phrase global warming hoax, which is absurdly in violation of the requirement of a neutral point of view. Imagine if one of the Moon landing hoax clowns came along and put in the article's lead, "Harrison Schmitt...was a participant in the Apollo 17 hoax mission". Do you think that would remain in the article long? It would not and should not. Likewise, it was right to remove the statement global warming hoax. Anyway, your revert has been reverted itself, and not by me.

According to the etext at Project Gutenberg, the punctuation after "Dr" and "Mr" is there. Project Gutenberg has a fairly rigorous proofreading process, and I don't think they'd do it if it were incorrect. I can't say if the punctuation is missing in the original edition, because all we see is a picture of the cover, all in capitals, and that may have been done for stylistic reasons. As far as the article missing the punctuation, I've wondered, too, since it is considered improper according to all the English teachers I've had from the first grade onward. I think not using periods after abbreviations is a fairly recent development by British journalists, because I've examined 19th century and early 20th century British writings, and they indicate abbreviations such as "Mr.", "Mrs.", "Dr.", etc. with a period, just like the rest of the English-speaking world. Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated. Statistics 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated. One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%. Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue. Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. I was writing from memory. I saw such a portable device on a television news report or program, or perhaps an engineering journal, some 10-20 years ago. Also, similar devices have been offered for sale in outdoor sporting goods stores for the civilian market and as survival equipment with inflatable life rafts. Mechanics' grease guns are designed to create a very large mechanical advantage with their pump levers, because it often takes high pressure to inject grease into bearings and movable joints. Similarly, reverse osmosis requires considerable pressure, more than one can provide with direct muscle power alone, so the designers of the hand-held devices borrowed from the mechanisms used in grease guns to increase the mechanical advantage. It took a bit of searching with Google, but I eventually located a couple of photos of such devices at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-8013418-Survivor-06-Desalinator/dp/B000F395X0/ and http://www.amazon.com/Katadyn-Survivor-35-Watermaker-Used/dp/B0012YS3XE/. The second example, the Katadyn Survivor 35 Watermaker, has the classic "grease gun" appearance. I don't own one, and most likely never will, due to the high price, so I can't be of help in getting a first-hand photo. Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

I'm confused by this edit of yours. You said "endash isn't minus sign", but several of the changes appear to be changing a minus sign (named character entity) to a hyphen. A hyphen is definitely not correct for that use. A minus-sign is a bit longer, and really does look close to an en-dash (although it obviously is a different character). Wikipedia-wide, the style-guide tells us to use the correct symbol (minus), which is good, but also it's harder to type and endash is commonly used as well (sad result). There's actually a better way for the bp and mp fields anyway (see my edit followup to yours in that article). Interestingly all the standard conversion templates (based on ((convert))) appear to display en-dash per consensus. DMacks (talk) 14:26, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For a few years now, the Red Link Recovery Project has been using the Red Link Recovery Live tool to track down and fix unnecessarily red links in articles. Just curious. I don't understand why you have removed the convert templates from the leads of several articles. What's the problem with their relation to tooltip. What is meant by, they "break tooltip preview"? Has anyone ever pointed out that Wikipedia generally considers it poor talk page decorum to have a signature that signs a word or name that is completely unrelated to your username? "Quicksilver" sounds neat, but it is confusing that you are signing this when your username is Hydrargyrum. Would you consider amending your signature to make it easier for users to identify you ? At first I thought I had made a mistake (I initially thought it was vandalism!). Then, I reverted my initial deletion after I saw you were making good edits up until the last one (which was good plus the duplication). But then on studying the edit, it was clear that a huge block of text had somehow been duplicated. Please check your edit to see what went on. I can't understand the why people want the famous dead to be either a 100% sinner or saint. I admire Mr Kinkade's building a business and making a lot of people happy. If lots of people think a picture is worthwhile, it is worth noting. I was not a fan of his work but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I also admired his pluck in pulling himself out of obscure, dire poverty and first attracting positive attention from the "fine art" world. Their criticism has as much to do with marketing as it does content. Please stop adding spaces around em dashes used for sentence interruption. That type of em dash gets no spaces, per WP:DASH. Also, list items that are followed by brief descriptions get a spaced en dash, not a spaced em dash. It looks like you are fighting against other editors such as Fat&Happy. Hey, just a friendly note that em dashes are to be unspaced per WP:DASH. Unspaced em dashes or spaced en dashes are equally good for punctuation within sentences, but they should be used consistently throughout an article. I fixed your dash changes at Sylvia Plath (which already had unspaced em dashes) here, but you may want to go back and fix the ones at Natalie Wood and others. Just a very polite reminder that it is not up to you or me to arbitrarily decide that WP:PUNCT should not be adhered to. This is a set Wikipedia standard that every editor here is required to adhere to. Just because some browsers (which ones?) might have buggy line break implementations (as you claim) does not justify breaching this standard. If you believe it should me modified, why don't you discuss this on the relevant talk page? But as long as it is not changed it plainly stands. Note that unspaced em dash is recommended by several English-language manuals of style, including The Chicago Manual of Style for American English and the Oxford Guide to Style for British English, and these are followed by major publishers. I've seen this line break behavior in numerous browsers — Netscape and its Mozilla derivatives; Microsoft Internet Explorer; Opera. I've also seen the behavior in various word processing programs, including the ever-popular Microsoft Word. Believe me I know typography better than you might think, as perhaps do people who worked on WP:PUNCTUATION. Completing a typing course (which you boast so much about) might be truly a fantastic experience but I don't really see what authority it gives you to override the well-known, respected manuals of style that I mentioned above (by the way, which manual of style was your course based on?). From what you are writing it appears that – in all likelihood – you confuse em dashes (which are usually unspaced) with en dashes (which are spaced when they separate, not link, words/phrases). Maybe you'd like to double-check with course materials. Yes, the spaced en dash is the mandated alternative, and is actually more common than the (unspaced) em dash. Spaced em dashes are not permitted, according to the style guide, which is why I've come to this page—to ask that this editor not go around spacing them. If you put a non-breaking space in front of an em dash it does not fix the widow/orphan control text flow problem. No matter what fix you offer, I will be able to show you a pathological case where it fails completely because of window size or font size or whatever.
