1st Passchendaele

Greetings Zawed, it was nice to see that 3rd Ypres has a new book. Did MacDonald put all the blame on Godley or put his failings into a context of the British machine beginning to break down in other respects too? RegardsKeith-264 (talk) 15:06, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gidday Keith-264, I hope you found the review interesting. Sorry for delay in getting back to you, I have just moved house (downsized actually, to an apartment). Godley cops the lion's share of blame; fundamentally, MacDonald is critical of Godley's leadership style, his focus on his career, the way in which he ran his headquarters and his blind adherence to a timetable regardless of deteriorating conditions. His analysis is more directed at the tactical level (corps/divisional arrangements) rather than at a strategic (army) level. Does that answer your question? Zawed (talk) 08:07, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It does thanks. I was most influenced when writing on the page by stories like the air reconnaissance report which erroneously put the front line after Poelcapelle where it was supposed to be, rather than 500 yards west - the sort of practical detail that general remarks about the collapse of links with the rear amount to. It seemed to me that the return of the rains made the successes of 20, 26 Sep and 4 Oct backfire, similar to the dilemmas that the Germans encountered at Verdun the year before - go on or go back, exploit the effect of 4 Oct/9 Oct by having another go quickly. I'll have a go at an inter-library loan considering the price. You might be interested in Krause Early Trench Tactics in the French Army 2013 which makes a good case for the failings of the French and British in 1915 being implementation rather than ignorance of what worked. Hope you're settling in. RegardsKeith-264 (talk) 08:29, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in an interview

Hi Zawed, I'd like to invite you to participate in a group interview in the upcoming August issue of the Military History Wikiproject's newsletter, The Bugle, with editors who work on articles concerning World War I. We're conducting this interview to mark the centenary of the war, and it forms part of a semi-regular series of interviews on thematic topics. If you're able to participate, I'd be grateful if you could post responses to the questions at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/News/August 2014/Interview by next Sunday 17 July. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. Regards, Nick-D (talk) 10:24, 2 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tweaks you made as well, I totally forgot to do the distance conversions. Cheers. Zawed (talk) 07:49, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I find that putting an article in for a B class is the best way of getting a fresh pair of eyes to look things over. Peer review request for Dave Gallaher

Hey Zawed. I notice you have a prodigious record on New Zealand-focused MilHist articles, so was wondering if you could spend the time to contribute to my peer review of Dave Gallaher here. Any feedback at all would be appreciated. Thanks. -- Shudde talk 06:52, 17 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Gidday Shudde, I will have a good look at the article shortly but in the meantime I have had a quick look at the military sections and a few things stand out. Ranks shouldn't be capitalised unless being used as a title; i.e "Sergeant Gallaher" is OK but "Gallaher was promoted to Sergeant" is not. In the WWI section, you have two different enlistment dates. The medals are service medals (like his Boer War medals), the way it is written suggests they are gallantry awards. As I say, I will have a closer look over the whole article later and will leave comments on the peer review page. Zawed (talk) 07:20, 17 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We noticed though that when you edited New Zealand Division, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Māori (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

2nd Infantry Brigade (New Zealand)

G'day, mate, haven't seen you on Wiki for awhile, so I hope everything is well. Anyway, quick question: I was having a look at the ((Anzac)) template, and pretty much all of the units have articles now, which is great to see. One stands out, though, for not having an article: 2nd Infantry Brigade (New Zealand). If you are looking for a project, I wonder if you would be interested in taking this on? The work you did on the New Zealand Division article was fantastic. I'd be happy to help in any way I can. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 07:26, 6 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AR, all well here, just been on a bit of a wikibreak as the real world was catching up on me! I'll take a look at the 2nd Brigade but probably don't have the resources for its post WWI history where I think it was a Territorial formation. Cheers. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. G'day, Zawed, as you may be aware, the nomination phase of the Milhist co-ord elections has begun. No pressure, but I would like to encourage you to consider running. I believe that you have the experience and knowledge, and you have been active in many areas of the project so I believe that you would stand a good chance of being successful and would make a fantastic addition to the co-ord team. Interview for the November Bugle

Hi Zawed, every so often the editors of the Milhist newsletter, the Bugle, run an interview with members of the project. For the November 2016 issue, we'd like to present a chat with the first-time coordinators from the September elections. We'd love you to participate -- the interview page is here. We always like to get the Bugle out by the 7th of the month, so allowing for some tidy-up before despatch, if you could complete your answers within two weeks, i.e. around 2nd November, that'd be great. Thanks/cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 07:49, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Zawed, did you want to take part in the interview? You can have another couple of days if you need 'em... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 07:18, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ian, I did intend to do this but it slipped my mind until your reminder. I have added my responses now. Cheers. Zawed (talk) 09:11, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:04, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Zawed. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Editor of the Week [26 November 2016]

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for extensive work in military history. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Krishna Chaitanya Velaga submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Zawed to be Editor of the Week. Zawed is one of the most well-known editors from military history topic area. His work goes as follows: created around 118 articles (which are mostly of B-class or higher), 8 A-class articles, more than 30 good articles and 4 articles were featured on DYK. Besides these, he regularly helps out with the reviewing processes, especially the GANs, and also at WikiProject Military history A-class review. One of his appreciated aspect is that while reviewing the GA nominations, he not only gives out suggestions but also help the nominator(s) by cleaning up the article himself to some extent, if needed. He was a nominee for the 2013 "Military historian of the Year" award. Presently, he is offering his services as a coordinator to the Military history project.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:
