Predicting that Melania will become more popular as a baby name has no bearing on the plausibility of Meliana as a misspelling. — Sam Sailor 14:31, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Delete. As with Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2016 October 16#VF2477, this is an unnecessary and unhelpful redirect from the call sign of a specific low-power radio transmitter to a broad overview article about the general concept of radio call signs in Canada — the article certainly provides a general explanation of what "VF" stations are, but the target contains no information at all about this VF station in particular. Which means the redirect is virtually pointless, because in the remarkably unlikely event that anybody actually searches for this at all the target isn't going to tell them anything about it. User Herostratus posted about this redirect at WT:NOT some time ago and didn't get any input, so they boldly redirected the shortcut to its current target. This has broken some old discussions, but "fixed" others, however its historical use as a shortcut to NOT seems as though it ought to be preferred. Suggest therefore that it should be retargeted back to Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 20:16, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(eubot) Delete. "Duesseldorf" is not used in the target, and "Dusseldorf" would be the normal English spelling. Duesseldorf is an ((R from other spelling)) but this one is pushing it. No internal links, three hits in ninety days. Si Trew (talk) 10:07, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that follows: the stats and links seem to show that very few (if any) people, render Dusseldorf-Pempelfort as Duesseldorf-Pempelfort when searching or linking. The whole premiss of these Eubot redirects is that "anything with a 'ü' can be transliterated as 'ue'"; I don't accept that premiss (even for German ones) when there's a well-established anglicised form. In this case, the anglicised form of "Düsseldorf" is Dusseldorf, not Duesseldorf. When we have place-names that have been truly anglicised, I don't think it's helpful to keep them in some bastardized half-German, half-English variant. It's a different matter for place-names that have not gone native, which are the vast majority.
In fact, even the Duesseldorf R only averages six or seven hits a day (with a massive spike to 199 on 22 September, for some reason), and is linked from precisely nowhere, although it is used in quite a few articles. But I'm not suggesting to delete that, I'm nominating this particular redirect. Si Trew (talk) 10:22, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you, we often keep "de" in the English name (e.g. de Montfort, d'Urberville and De'Ath, let alone Delevingne); but here we don't actually have the name "Borbon Dampierre" or "de Borbon Dampierre" at all (nor versions with the accents, Borbón Dampierre and de Borbón Dampierre), so I'm not sure this is actually part of a name... I was more really going for WP:RfD#D2, not at target; it's "Borbón y Dampierre" so I suppose "Borbon and Dampierre" makes more sense. "Si Trew (talk) 10:15, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was no consensus. There is clearly no appetite for deletion, but no consensus on whether it should point to the current target or not. I find the arguments in favour of keeping slightly stronger but not enough for an outright keep result, particularly since a non consensus closure results in the same experience for a user of the redirect. (Eubot) Delete. Not how we spell Zurich, in fact it's not even how Zurich spells Zuerich except in a couple of Web addresses, so this is a weird transliteration. No doubt used "Zuerich" is used this way in the wild, but this is the English Wikipedia and if the transliteration is there to help English readers then it's not really sensible to disambiguate with "Zuerich". These have come by way of Mönchaltorf (Zürich) and Volken (Zürich) (which are marked as ((R to Swiss municipality (canton))): these aren't). Si Trew (talk) 08:35, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(Eubot) Delete as WP:RFD#D5 nonsense, not a Germanic umlaut but a letter in the Hungarian alphabet. "Fueloep Beck O" also has very weird word order, while in Hungarian this would be "Beck Ö. Fülöp" (as the article states), that doesn't make "O" part of the surname here: it's actually the initial of the first name, and "Fülöp" is the middle name. For example my name in Hungarian order would be "Trew S. Mark", not "Trew Simon M" (but foreigners' names keep their usual order). Si Trew (talk) 08:14, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(Eubot) Delete per WP:TITLE, we don't have titles in titles, and Mīr is a title (honorific). Since this is not a title familiar to an English-speaking audience, and we haven't an article about it, its presence is WP:RFD#D2 confusing. We don't have M. Mitterand for example. I just guessed wrong: definitely no affinity to German, then! I did try to find the language for this, but obviously not very hard since we have sv:Kräftor. Still, no particular affinity to Swedish either. Incidentally, User:Hegvald, there are a lot of redirects created by User:Eubot from Swedish that have been transliterated with "ö" as "oe", e.g. Christer Sjögren as Christer Sjoegren. I don't know if these make sense (in general) or not; Swedish_alphabet#Accented_letters is silent on the subject and I didn't get much joy from a wider gsearch. Can you help? Si Trew (talk) 09:56, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
While in German, ö>oe is standard and sometimes used for indexing in a way it isn't in Swedish, one will still on occasion see oe, ae and aa (for å) used in Swedish, mostly when there are technical limitations (as in the early years of the internet; I remember using these spellings in the 90s when writing e-mail through a system that couldn't handle the letters with diacritics, and I wasn't alone in doing this). There are also Swedish surnames that use ae or oe; this was originally probably limited to latinized, "learned" names, such as Læstadius or Thermænius (which may be written with or without the ligature, dependent on technical limitations and personal preference) or names of families of Danish origin, but one does see ae or æ used in names with a Swedish etymology, such as Bæckström (=Bäckström), where it is a purely cosmetic issue (like using the spelling Smythe for Smith), although no doubt often of significance to the identity of the family or individual in question.
Sorry if this was a less clear-cut comment than you wanted. As for the redirects, I find them harmless at worst, and they may sometimes actually be useful. Unless they are needed for a title of another article or problematic in some other particular way, I would think it better to keep them. --Hegvald (talk) 12:15, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Hegvald: I'll stop listing them here then, unless they're a particular problem. I'd already skipped listing them until I had more consensus on whether we should keep them. Nevertheless, they should probably be rcatted as ((R from other spelling)), not ((R from title without diacritics)). Si Trew (talk) 15:01, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Delete all. No entries at the target are for any of these forms. Kotylio doesn't hatnote to the DAB. Kotylion is red. Kotilio is red. Kotílio is red. Kotýlio is red. Kotýlion is red. Presumably, then, we don't any of these disambiguations. Actually, their presence just makes everything more ambiguous and WP:RFD#D2 confusing. Si Trew (talk) 01:42, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(Eubot) Delete. Not at target and my Google search suggests that this is WP:RFD#D5 nonsense, I can't find this word-form in any language except Esperanto meaning "Tyranny" (from Wiktionary). This was created from the base R of Tiranё, I dont know how the bot decided an "ё" should be an "io". Si Trew (talk) 01:23, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I hadn't realised that was U+0451 : CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER IO, I had assumed it was U+00EB : LATIN SMALL LETTER E WITH DIAERESIS. That makes the source redirect weird too, as a mix of Latin and Cyrillic characters. I'll list that separately, presumably at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2016_December_5#Tiranё. (eubot for the non-diacritics one). This is a bit of a weird disambiguation, because we don't have an English article for sl:Občina Tišina, so really we don't need to disambiguate that we're talking about the town but not the Občina. I find it odd we don't have an article for it, when French, German and Spanish etc (i.e. other large Wikipedias) do... I wonder if it needs retargeting somehow. The one with the diacritics is an ((R from move)) of 2006, but in other WPs the town and the občina are distinct, so I wonder if this is just WP:RFD#D2 confusing to have them as the same thing. (Eubot). I have come over with a dose of the Windischgratzes here. This is a mix of German ("Ernst"), English, and English transliteration of German ("Lueneburg"). We have forty-seven more redirects to this target, which I'll argue is far too many. (It's not a question of WP:RCHEAP, it's a question of "clutter": having forty-seven different ways to refer to the same person in an article encourages editors to be inconsistent: and things like elision and so on are what pipes are for). I better batch them, but will start with this one. It is not, as proclaimed, a ((R from title without diacritics)). Si Trew (talk) 00:14, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
