I'm afraid I don't know for sure what might be causing that. I tried test-editing a couple of categories myself, and found that sometimes I was able to replicate the problem, but other times the tag was removed without a hitch — the difference did seem to hinge on whether there was other text on the page besides the tag (in which case the tag loitered around) or the tag was the only thing on the page (in which case it cleared properly), so you might be right that it was an issue of where the tag got placed, but I can't say that for certain. And since I just tag pages but am not one of the HotCat coders, I'm not the person who can fix it, but I'll bring the issue to WP:VPT to see if somebody with more coding expertise can look into it. • A vote to ratify the charter for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) is open till 2 February 2024, 23:59:59 (UTC) via Secure Poll.
