Hi. I question the usefulness of putting all these general farming articles under the Agriculture in New Zealand category. Imagine if we did that for every country! The articles in the Agriculture in New Zealand category should be specific to New Zealand: perhaps crops/animals/methods/companies which are exclusive to New Zealand. Let me know what you think of this suggestion. OptimistBen (talk) 07:28, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Hmm, yes and no. The stub category "Category:Agriculture in New Zealand" had a request to populate it. So I did. It didn't say how or restrict me from thinking it through for myself.
Then, looking from another way of using the system, if you start with the Category "Agriculture in New Zealand" because you work that way and are looking for an index of everything that applies to NZ, you'd find a really useful list of things that are agricultural where NZ has an involvement—sometimes a lead in that science or endeavour. I presume that NZ survives in the world because of its ability to export agricultural produce—almost to the exclusion of everything else?
Ok, you think it through for yourself too. Do you want to tell me what the reason for "Categories" is? Do you think that I have misunderstood the way that people could use categories in Wikipedia? I'll do something else for the rest of my day and get back to you another. Let's see what we can work out together. Lin (talk) 07:39, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You have misunderstood what categories are for, yes. Categories should show a close tie between the material of the article and the topic of the category. It is incorrect to place Plant (an article about all aspects of plant biology throughout all of time) with Category:Agriculture in New Zealand. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:21, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Winstonwolfe. Yes, I obviously did misunderstand. Bugger, I was sucked in by the language! Becvause I'm living in Australia now I am a bit remote from 75 Squadron resources, so I'm not going to achieve much. Do what you wish - if you've got the time. I've missed the reunion of a buch of people who could have helped - couldn't afford to travel to NZ after my wide journeying this year.
BTW, I don't understand how your text got to me - but I'm too lazy to sort it out just now. I hope to remember to look it up if it doesn't happen automatically.
Well I'm damned, I joined in 1955 and there was only one meteor left in storage then, and I thought that that was it! Hmmm, I remember doing some work on that first Beaver - cannot remember the year, for the life of me, but probably mid-late 1958. I guess that I was helping Graeme Johnston.
As for the battle honours, I should have looked about more first. Silly boy!
Hey good to hear from you. Yes, the computer geek language is @#$%^& confusing, (but then so is military speak to most people I suppose).
You can look at another user's page by clicking on their name, and then comment by writing in discussion, and just by doning that, it sends a message. It seems, (and I don't know how this custom came about), people write on each other's discussion pages - which can make for a disjointed sort of conversation. Don't put yourself down, you will know vastly more about 75 squadron and the RNZAF than I will, (after all you served in it, whereas I've only been in the army). Winstonwolfe 04:45, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Re 75 squadron RNZAF and 75 Squadron RAF - I think you misunderstand the merger suggestion. On my understanding, given the scant information on 75 Squadron RAF, it would involve redirecting that page to the 75 squadron RNZAF one. If you remain opposed to the suggestion of a merger, I would be intereted in which of the two artilces you think should cover the World war II activities of the squadron and why. (I note no one has done anything about for months anyway, and I'm not about to start :-), Winstonwolfe 01:03, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Re alterations to the RNZAF page. I have reverted the battle honor comments. I agree it would be a good idea to include battle honours on the squadron pages, but because these are comments about the squadrons, not useful information for someone reading about the RNZAF which should be made on the comments page of the individual squadron articles, not on the main article page for the RNZAF. (What would be even better is if you added the battle honours to the squadron pages yourself :-).
I have also altered some minor factual and style points, e.g. the RNZAF in fact had three Gloster Meteors, though I believe on the single seater was used in New Zealand; on the other hand it only had one de Havilland Beaver, (unless you count the RNZAF museum's example as a second). Winstonwolfe 01:17, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that you might like to know that British anti-invasion preparations of World War II, an article to which you have previously contributed, has been put forward as a featured article candidate. Thank you for your help. If you would like to comment on this article's nomination, please see here. Your opinions will be most welcome. Gaius Cornelius 12:28, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In July of last year you made significant additions to the Sunderland article, expanding it from about 29,000 to over 43,000 characters. Partly as a result of this, no doubt, the article sports a banner heading stating that more citations are required! Could you provide some citation(s) for your sources, so that this banner can be removed? That would be much appreciated. Thanks. --TraceyR (talk) 10:38, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
All very well Tracey, but you might understand that RAF documentation for its aircraft was very poor and almost useless for the sort of thing that I added. Most OCTUs developed their own sets of notes for the particular model of aircraft that they were training personnel for and those notes were not printed in good quality on quality paper. My training notes from 1963 disintegrated long ago—and I expect that no one else has those notes in their possession any longer either. The RNZAF was the last air force to be flying Sunderlands and I was the crew of the last one to fly (end of March 1967) for all except its very last flight (from Laucala Bay, Fiji, to Hobsonville, RNZAF Base Auckland, Auckland)
I guess that I can get hold of the AP (Air Publication) number and append it to the narrative. It probably won't help much but you will have the satisfaction of seeing the number listed at least once. I doubt that anyone will challenge what I have written because it is so long since anyone flew an S25 Mk5.
If you think that you should delete what I added then do your thing. I don't live in NZ any more and I'm not sure where I'd get anyone to agree that that is how a crew operated, but if you really want someone to say that what I wrote is accurate then I will try to do that.
You can contact me directly at linmhall@gmail.com and we can have further words about the situation (I'm not sure that you'll get to see this writing even). Lin (talk) 06:22, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lin, I was really amused by seeing how deeply ingrained the controversy runs what actually 12:00 a.m. is supposed to mean. Your certainty about one meaning equals the certainty of many others who claim the opposite. It only goes to show that this notation should never be used in any serious context. It would very likely lead to miscommunication. −Woodstone (talk) 09:58, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Hmmm, I can see the funny side of it now too. I have this light-hearted amusement that one should call a particular time an am or a pm based on the way an certain type electric clock presents the information to the person looking at it — regardless of the logic and long-ingrained use of the terms by science and horology. I guess that it is better the current way in Wikipedia because it is a publication for the common man. Lin (talk) 12:52, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It may also amuse you that just a few days ago, there was a programming contest at acm-cpc. They originally said:
Deadline for submissions is 00:00 UTC on February 7, 2010
After I noticed that on Februrari 7 the submission was still open, I wrote to them and they admitted their mistake and changed the wording on the web site. −Woodstone (talk) 15:57, 18 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone know how to connect to a German language entry?[edit]
I think so. Take a look at the Simplon Tunnel entry now and see if that is what you intended.
When I do this sort of thing, I sometimes write in the edit summary "temporary link pending translation". I'm not sure if it (the unsubtle hint) ever works, but it seems to me that no harm is done by highlighting where a translation (in my judgment) asks to be created...

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting[edit]
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
